There is already a jeepney thread... There is no automobile industry in the Philippines... UK got the Aston Martin, Bentley, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mini, Rolls Royce, Vauxhall... French brands Citroen, Peugeot, Renault.... German cars are Audi, BMW, Daimmler, Mercedes Benz, Porsche, Volkswagen... Italian Brand are Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Lamborgini, Maserati, Lambretta... We stil have not touch the Asian &!ameican brand
^^ Automotive Industry Thread pertains to the CARS Program and the sales of vehicles in the Philippines. This includes significant news pertaining to new vehicle models coming to our country, the effects of the tax reform and excise tax on vehicles, dealer networks and expansions, and even some forumer feedback on vehicles they purchased or want to purchase. This thread is essentially the Top Gear Philippines, Auto Industrya or James Deakin blog extension catered for Skyscrapercity Philippines forumers. There is some overlap on the new jeepneys being introduced but those are okay to be discussed in this thread. Issues pertaining to the jeepney operators and drivers, as well as some historical discussions and showcasing here specific to jeepneys and there belong to the Jeepney Thread.

Ranger is the only pickup truck right now that has electric power steering, hence its the best. The less fluids a car needs, the better. Otherwise they are all the same.

Government sends notice of impending tax hike to auto companies

No law has yet been finalized or signed, but it seems the government is already advising automobile companies to prepare themselves for the excise tax on cars.

That was the word given to AutoIndustriya.com from an executive in the auto industry involved in premium and luxury automobiles. Auto companies were given an advisory from the government to prepare for the immediate implementation of the comprehensive revised tax code, also known as Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion Act (TRAIN).

The notice stated that new tax schedules will be implemented by January 1, 2018, even though the law itself has not yet been finalized. The tax reform law is only scheduled to start the bicameral conference today, November 27, 2017, in order to reconcile the differences between the Senate and House versions.
I went to a Toyota dealership not too long ago....its like Divisoria during the Christmas rush!

I read an editorial that the Senate version daw would even lower the taxes of the luxury vehicles.
Mitsubishi PH invests P360 million in Laguna production plant

It looks like Mitsubishi Motors Philippines (MMPC) has got big things planned for 2018.

The Japanese carmaker has just invested around P360 million on expanding its plant is Santa Rosa, Laguna, increasing its land area to 23 hectares, and its building area to 120,000 square meters.

The plant now features its own container yard and material handling operations warehouse, meaning the company will no longer need to lease outside storage facilities for completely knocked-down units and locally developed parts. The improvements made will increase efficiency, as well as the quality of the manufacturer's products.

The company says the expansion is proof of its efforts to promote the local automotive industry. MMPC has already invested more than P3.4 billion in the Philippine government's Comprehensive Automotive Resurgence Strategy (CARS), and is now producing Mirage models.

Aside from the improvements to its Laguna plant, MMPC also recently turned over a fleet of Fuso trucks to one of the country's largest cargo transport and logistic companies, MetroPac Movers, Inc. The group purchased a total of 270 trucks; a deal which MMPC says is indicative of the Philippines' robust commercial vehicle industry.

MMPC president Mutsuhiro Oshikiri promised that the company will continue to offer only the best to the Philippine market. " With this growing demand, trust that we will continue to offer superior products relevant to the needs of the market while putting customer satisfaction at the center of our goals at all times."
So yeah, it doesn't look like the looming increase in automotive excise taxes is deterring Mitsubishi any time soon.

Huge problem if we keep encouraging the ownership of private vehicles. :eek:hno::eek:hno:

Metro Manila traffic to reach ‘standstill levels’ in 5 years

The Duterte administration’s infrastructure program may not be enough to deal with the country’s transportation woes as road congestion in Metro Manila may reach “standstill levels” by 2022, according to a study by an American consulting group.

In “Unlocking Cities,” the Boston Consulting Group, which transport network company Uber commissioned, said government plans to increase the capacity of rail-based public transport services “will not be sufficient to meet growth in transport demand” over the next five years.

(snipped)

It pointed out that mega cities like Manila, Jakarta, Ho Chi Minh, Hanoi and Surabaya — considered “Tier 3” cities — were “at risk of reaching standstill levels of congestion during peak hours by 2022” because of the rate of vehicle growth.

This meant that by then cars would run at less than 10 kilometers per hour (kph).

The study, conducted from September to October and covering around 300 commuters per city, warned that congestion may become unmanageable in cities such as Manila because “80 percent of commuters surveyed indicate plans to purchase a car in the next five years.”

It noted, however, that these commuters expressed willingness to forgo buying cars if ride-sharing could meet their transport requirements on price, timeliness and availability.

“Across the cities studied, we estimate [around] 40 to 70 percent of private vehicles on the road today could be removed, if ride-share becomes a viable substitute for private vehicle ownership,” the study said.

^^ Buying new cars isn't the issue. Its keeping old cars even though they are way past their useful life is the issue. Even in my own village where I have neighbours that have all the money in the world, there are many of them that still keep their old cars. A certain "get out of jail card" neighbour even has an "Ancient Pajero" (similar to the one below) that still litters the street (and still being used) even though he has lots of newer cars.

What more those with less money who need to hold on to their "big body Corolla" or "box type Lancers" or worse, 40+ year old jeepneys?

I think people should really treat cars as tools that have a useful life and be prepared to dispose of them after 15 years in service. The mentality of keeping them forever has got to go so cars plying our roads will be technologically current, safe and environmentally friendly.

what do people do with old cars in other countries? are there programs that gives incentive to discourage not-fit for road use cars?
Is this finally it for the vehicle plate mess?

LTO: New license plates supplier to start delivery by March 2018

LTO awards new supplier of license plates

It looks like the country's license plate woes will soon be answered after the Land Transportation Office (LTO) announced that the new license plates are expected to arrive some time in March 2018.

Recently, the government agency issued the notice of award (NOA) to the winning bidder that will produce the new license plates. The winning bidder is Trojan Computer Forms Manufacturing Corporation and J.H. Tonnjes E.A.S.T. GmbH & Co KG Joint Venture.

According to a well-placed source, the German-backed manufacturer will produce the new license plates locally with imported materials.

In some US states, they have "clunkers for cash" programs wherein the government pays you a couple of thousand bucks or so for an old junker car you want to get rid off. In Canada, a car has to pass emissions testing, otherwise it cannot be insured (which is mandatory). But at the end of the day, when maintenance exceeds the value of the car, the owners would just junk them. This especially in North America where car mechanic labour is very expensive. Once a major component like transmission or even timing belt breaks, it makes little sense to keep a car from an economic perspective no matter how good the rest of the car is. Its the same deal with flooded cars...people just write them off (if covered by insurance). Usually old cars you see there are maintained by people who know how to fix them at the first place. Those, and of course classic cars.
This is it ladies and gentlemen! If you haven't ordered your brand new car, DO IT NOW!!! Do not wait! Do not procrastinate! If you have no money, get a loan from the bank, parents, relatives, pawnshop, loan shark, etc. The crippling excise taxes are coming!!!!

Senate, Congress OK higher 4-tier automotive excise tax, exempts electric cars

After the bicameral conference between the two houses and with members of the executive branch in attendance, the committee has agreed on the new tax system for automobiles, one that features a new 4-tier scheme as opposed to the Congress version with 5 tiers and the Senate version with 2.

The new 4-tier automotive excise tax scheme* will be as follows:

4% - up to PhP 600,000

10% - PhP 600,000 over up to PhP 1,000,000

20% - over PhP 1,000,000 up to PhP 4,000,000

50% - over PhP 4,000,000

Interestingly enough, the version that was agreed upon at the bicameral conference places specific exemptions on electric vehicles (EVs), while hybrids (vehicles that use a combination of internal combustion and electric power) will only be levied half the new standard excise tax rate.
Interestingly enough, Rappler is saying "All pickup trucks" are exempt...

Tax scheme for cars

The bicam approved a 4-tier tax scheme for automobiles:

4% for up to P600,000
10% for over P600,000 to P1 million
20% for over P1 million up to P4 million
50% for over P4 million

All pick-up trucks and electric vehicles would be exempted from additional taxes.

Hybrid cars would be imposed half the taxes as non-hybrid vehicles.
....but its Rappler so take it with a grain of salt until some other mainstream media or automotive news site mentions it. Its still wise to order your pickup truck now just to be safe... ;)

Yap, the new dreaded excise tax hike that was contemplated as far back as a year ago is now here, effective January, 2018.

Luckily for me, I’ve already bought our vehicle (Toyota Fortuner) a few months ago, as I was betting back then that this increase will go through. So at least I’m good until our next vehicle purchase in about 5+ years. But maybe by then, I’ll be buying a pickup so as to be exempted from this tax hike as per news reports (see below). Anyway, I don’t mind driving a pickup because the designs of many pickups now a days really look nice. Unfortunately for me, electric vehicle is not an option since I live in a condo without a plugin in our parking slot, as all condos are. Maybe the government should mandate installation of plugins in every parking slots developers will be constructing in the future, if the government is really serious about this.

As reported by Interakyon:

To encourage green and cleaner transportation, electric vehicles will be exempt from the tax, while hybrid cars will be taxed at half the rates. Pick-ups, commonly used by businessmen and entrepreneurs for commercial and agricultural purposes, will also be exempt.
