We got many nice topics in this forum. I want to discuss origin of Azerbaijani names and surnames. I am sure most people will like it.

Does anybody know meaning of their name and surname? Where your roots came from? Also what kind of Azerbaijani names do you like and why? :)

I think we should to return to our original national surnames before soviets took us over which were ending with Li, ZADE or just Name like Ali, Memmed, Rza etc. Not like Russian surname ev, ov, ova.
I think titles must be given like my maternal side is originally called Hajibeyli and Badalbayli meaning from Bey dynasty

I think zade is a persian suffix.

Yes, but to be more specific, most of them are Islamic. People with religious beliefs often use similar names, which is bad in terms of creativity.

Instead of having 20 people with different names, we get 10 Alis and 10 Zahras.
TUNAR ?????? I don't believe !!! Never heard that name

It is quite new name. There is even a singer named Tunar.

well yea thats what u mean :)
i didnt think that in the secular state so many islamic/arabic names would be used, does the government support this?
also, maybe a bit off topic, but how religious are rep. azerbaijanis as a whole? through pictures they seem not very islamic but some news and things like this seems a bit contradictory

Well if someone have islamic name doesn't mean he is devout religious person and government is secular so everybody is free to practice what they want.

About ur question, Azerbaijan is secular just like Turkey, only difference is between these countries is that Azerbaijan have both quite good proportions of Sunni and Shia groups. But extremism is very low, and even if something happens it directly relates to our "foreign" neighbours.
