What is it like? Has anyone been there or does anyone here love ther?
I'm heading there on an exchange trip in September and would like to know about the main island of Sao Miguel and the other islands.

Never been there, but wait for Cbr Domes to see this thread and he'll give you an extensive list relevant and irrelevant information.

These are volcanic islands at the end of the world, part of Macaronesia, called "islands of the fortunate" by Ancient Greeks.
I used to know a guy from there. He was hot.
The Azores are good for scuba diving. With luck you can see a whale shark. Dive Azores

The Azores... The place i call home! :D One of most beatiful islands in the world!

About S. Miguel, as you said, it's the biggest and most populated island, and it's the most diverse and explored when we talk about tourism and places to see. ;)

Most of the Hotels are in Ponta Delgada city, the island's capital and it's probably a good base for you. It's a cosmopolitan city with a large range of accommodation for the tourists: you can find from expensive luxurious hotels in the marina to cheap historic zone hostels!

Ponta Delgada also have a large range of good restaurants that serve a large range of dishes: from the excelent local food to internacional cuisine. You also can find all of the main chain's of fast food (Mcdonald's, KFC, Burger King, Pizza Hut, etc), but i think the local cuisine it's better. :D

To make yourself explore the island it's good to have a rented car, and a good map or GPS! Altought our highways and freeways are flagged with a lot of information, some tourists get lost pretty easly on the most remotes places in the island.

I highly recomend a circuit with all of the Lakes (Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo, Furnas), vulcanic places with termal pools (Furnas and Caldeira Velha), the tea plantations (we are the only place in Europe that produce tea), the surf beaches, the fantastic trails and an historic circuit throught the capital (all of this in S. Miguel of course).

Some photos of the island:

- Black Sand Surf beaches (the Azores are known as "the Hawaii of the Atlantic for surf"):

And a lot more, waiting for you, here in the Azores! :D Any information, i'm here ;)

I'm surprised that there's a Burger King and a KFC in Ponta Delgada, they're pretty rare in Portugal but I guess that Ponta Delgada is a major regional capital.
Are there any reasonably priced flights from the UK? It's somewhere I'd like to visit too.

There are probably more options to Madeira.
I think most Portuguese people in Canada (and there are quite a lot) are from Azores. They always seem to denigrate mainland Portugal as some sort of crime ridden hellhole :eek:hno:

There are actually two Burger Kings in PDL. The city it's actually a lot bigger than the majority of the district capitals in the mainland. ;)

Sata performs direct flights from the UK to the Azores. Here's the site: https://www.sata.pt/en

Isn't this a common reaction among many immigrant communities? Some (not all) people from Turkey here in the Netherlands that came from Istanbul love to loathe and dismiss people from Eastern Turkey as giving their country a bad name and how they are not represented by them. Some Indians from Mumbai like to distance themselves from Northern India. Some people from Curaçao don't like being associated in the same group with Aruba, saying Curaçao is "nothing like" Aruba.

Now regarding Açores: what is the sea water temperature over there?

Around 16ºC in the winter and 24ºC in summer. ;)

Far cooler than in Madeira then. Are there ferries between Azores and Madeira?
Not really. Madeira's water temperature is only about 1 or 2ºC above the Azores. Considering we are far northen than Madeira, we have nice temperatures. ;)

There's no ferries between Azores and Madeira.

Of the top of my head, I can only think of one Burger King in Portugal.
