Went once many years ago but found that it was just filled with cheap goods and bogans from Oz.
Decided on Hawaii and I've never looked back. Honolulu's got the weather/shopping/nightlife and is very safe unlike the Gold Coast.

I love going to Bali because I find I has some of the best dope I have ever had! Well worth the trip to spend a couple of weeks all bent up. Sweet.

Bali is a good place, the people that get bashed and end up in hospital have only themselves to blame.

When you go out get off your face and start a fight and anything like that your asking for it.
I stay out in a place called Seminyak, much more peaceful and upper class
Only a short drive into Kuta, but you've got everything you really need in Seminyak.

It's not different to anywhere else in the world

I've no interest in Bali/Thailand etc. No appeal whatsoever. I've lived within 5 minutes of a beach most of my life and rarely go. Also just knowing the kind of Australian's who travel to Bali, I'd rather disassociate myself entirely.

I've never been but think I have to go at least once. Very hard to judge a place without having been there.

There seems to be at times a lot of snobbyness on ssc...

I went for the first time in June this year and had an absolute brilliant time, easily one of the best weeks of my life.

It's what you make out of it. I knew before we left that I didn't want to spend the entire time partying (plenty of time for that in the evenings - 6 shots for $6!!!). We ended up rafting, cycling through the villages & mountains, bungee jumping, snorkelling, waterbom park, shopping etc etc. Everything is just so crazy cheap over there.
Would definitely go back.

Bali is the bestest. Even more sweet now we get more bang for our buck than the yanks. So many good sides to Bali. ...What happens in bali stays in bali.

Please tell me that you didn't swallow that shit story on 60 minutes about the Gold Coast being a crime mecca :eek:hno: Liam Bartlett is as bad as Andrew Bolt.

Hawaii is great, but don't kid yourself that it doesn't have crime too.

Agree that Hawaii has crime too but there's always been a very strong police presence there and if you're in the tourist area it certainly feels very safe.
BTW I saw that 60 Min report and I did perceive it to be a crime mecca. My bad, because I based that last statement on what I saw on tv. I guess I should see for myself but I haven't been there for a very long time and I don't plan to go there any time soon.

No surprise hearing people who have strong opinions on Bali, without having been there. Hilarious - you're being typical ignorant bogans.

Anyway, Bali is great, you just have to know where to go. There are many beautiful beaches, amazing natural lanscapes (volcanos/mountains), and great food. It's a very diverse island.

There's also plenty of isolated parts of Bali, with little to no tourists.

There is little to no crime, especially compared to Australia.

I have been to basically every country in SE Asia, multiple times, and Bali twice. I'll probably go back one day.

Here's my report on Balangan Beach, one of the places in Bali I speak of.

Just about every other destination in se Asia is better. I found it a bit to tailored to the Aussie tourist.

Ps- I spent most of my time just outside ubud and did day trips to kuta and semanyak. Still enjoyable, and perhaps a great first taste for the timid traveller. Not as cheap as you would expect tho.

And food - bit ordinary, bland cuisine, mostly a mish mash of other regions.

I found it cheap as ****, amongst the cheapest places I have ever been to, if you aren't in tourist areas. Meals for less than a buck, I even saw beach side warung accommodation for around $2 a night. I have stayed in a luxury hotel, and at a "budget", but beautiful, beachside "resort" with a pool etc, that was about $20 a night.

One suggestion - go to Java, its very, very close to Bali, and much much better. Or get to some of the other nearby islands.

I really know SE Asia reasonably well, and Bali is a surprise if you find the right spot. Last month alone I was in Singapore, KL, Ipoh, Penang, Malacca, Burma, and Thailand...and I still rate Bali reasonably high for a SE Asian experience.
