Baltimore bars?

4668 Views 15 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  midrise
I am planning a bachelor party for a friend, and we are going to go down to Baltimore for a quick weekend. The groom has never been out in Baltimore, and neither have I (strange since it's little more than an hour away).

We are planning on seeing a ballgame during the day, then head out at night. My impression is that Fell's Point and Federal Hill are the bar neighborhoods. Is this correct? Where are the nightlife hotspots?

Federal Hill and Fells Point are probably the best neighborhoods to bar hop. Plenty of choices and the crowds should be good sized to mix it up with others.

I imagine that a strip club would be involved. In that case, if you're adventurous, head to the Block on Baltimore Street (two blocks from the IH). You'll have an experience there, guaranteed. For a more traditional strip club experience, go to the Gentlemen's Gold Club on Pulaski Highway in East Baltimore.

Make sure to visit Chap's pit beef which is located in the parking lot next door.

My suggestion would be bar hopping in Fell's Point, which has dive bars and very nice bars all packed into a few square blocks. You could also hit the Ritz that way (strip club on Broadway). But there's a bar for everybody in Fell's
A mention of Power Plant Live should be made for a bachelor party since it has quite a few large bars and clubs all together. I actually think the new beer hall is pretty amazing on a warm night (they open the sides and roof of the building).
Depends on your ages.

early-mid 20s, Federal Hill
late 20s, early/mid 30s, Fells Point
You guys could barhop along the circulator's purple line. Station North (Liam Flynn's, The Depot, etc) Mount Vernon (Turps, BREWERS ART!, etc) Downtown (Mick O Shea's, B&O, Pratt Street Ale House, etc) Federal Hill (All those bars around the market)

Not much of a strip club guy, but if you don't feel like looking at naked mutants, I would head to Scores and Scores only. The bars on 'The Block" other than Hustler all kind of draw girls that have been drinking water from the Inner Harbor their whole lives and may or may not have a third nostril. Scores is kind of in the middle of nowhere (and by 'the middle of nowhere', I mean 'by the jail', so if one of the party gets a little rowdy in fells, it should be easy to visit him prior to/after the Scores trip).

I would say to get to the game a bit early, grab a few beers at one of the bars next to the park, Pickles or Sliders. There are typically really good specials on beers, and its a nice outside scene.

Afterward, I would recommend walking to Federal Hill (~20min walk) to the Cross St. market. The bars around it are ok and usually a big party with lots of women, but the market itself is a can't-miss. Decent beer selection, great crabcakes, sushi, etc. all really affordable. I take anyone who has not been to Baltimore there, and people are invariably impressed.

Jump in cabs there and head over to fells (or just stay in Fed Hill if you end up liking it...which is very likely), where you pretty much can't go wrong. The best move in Fells, especially with a large group is just to wander, but a few of my favorites are Waterfront Hotel, Cat's Eye, Bertha's, and Horse You Came in On (or just "The Horse). All have live music and are Bmore classics. If you are really looking to send everyone into overdrive, there's an AWESOME newer place called Ry, where they have a huge selection of small-batch whiskeys. There's also another Scotch bar you will have to google. Thames St. Oyster house is BEAUTIFUL if people are looking to prime up before the strip club.

5 minute cab ride to Scores from there. I would skip Ritz Cabaret unless you feel like getting in with the Russian Mafia.

If you guys are REALLY feeling adventurous, hit up the Lithuanian Beer Hall for late night. Its not in the best neighborhood, but its a huge party, really cheap eastern euro beer, and chock full of beautiful women. Stick together though. A lot of hustlers in that area after dark.

Power Plant is a great place to get drunk if that's the plan, but I personally would skip it. Feels a lot more like Orlando than Baltimore.

Excellent comparison. Totally true.

Go to Bo Brooks to get some crabs.
I've got this bachelor party stuff down to a science.

Come down Thursday night and get a steak at Cap Grille or Flemmings.

Go to Pete's Grille for Breakfast on Friday

Do a Fells Point bar crawl Friday afternoon.

Saturday - get a 1 day pass at the Fort Ave Merritt and hangout at the pool. There's a bar and everything. Go to the game - it's at 4, right? - and then follow the crowd to fed hill. I'd skip the strippers. It's not that hard to find a group of girls, in particular a bachelorette party. Believe it or not - my friends and I used to have a ton of luck at the games themselves.

I think we'll be doing Federal Hill. It's an easier walk from the ballpark, and we'll be tanked already. There's too many of us for cabs, someone would surely get lost.
Back from Baltimore. We went to Federal Hill. The walk was a lot longer than I thought it would be from Downtown, where we were staying. We only went to a few places: Mad River, MaGerks, and Stalking Horse. We were pleasantly surprised to see that MaGerk's was a Philly sports bar (we were down for the Phillies game). We later went to Scores. I think it definitely was better than any other place we could've gone.

Ugh. MaGerks.

Glad you had fun in Baltimore and found a little bit of home there, but I personally hate that place.
