About time -can't wait until they break ground this year and get things rolling finally.
Amtrak has selected a team led by Michael Beatty to redevelop the 107-year-old Penn Station and surrounding properties into a mixed-use project that could include a new hotel.
Penn Station Partners — comprised of Beatty Development Group, Armada Hoffler Properties, Cross Street Partners, Gensler, WSP USA, Network Rail Consulting and Mace Group — was selected over two other teams to perform the 1.6-million-square-foot redevelopment.
Preliminary concepts include a hotel in the historic station head house, as well as office and residential space to the north along Lanvale Street connected by an expanded concourse with new retail opportunities.
Amtrak said negotiations for the project are underway. Specific details regarding the development’s scope, design and phasing will be the focus of "future engagement" between Amtrak, the selected developer, stakeholders and the public.
“Baltimore Penn Station is the eighth-busiest station in our national network and this important step underscores Amtrak’s continued efforts to significantly enhance the station experience and amenities for all travelers,” Bart Bush, Amtrak vice president of real estate stations and facilities, said in a statement.
Amtrak to invest $90M in improvements at Penn StationAmtrak and a team of locally led developers have reached an agreement expected to kick-start a $400 million to $600 million transformation of the area around Baltimore’s historic Penn Station, creating a transit-oriented hub of apartments, shops, offices and a hotel.
Under a master development agreement announced Thursday, Amtrak will invest $90 million in station and track improvements and lease an adjacent lot to the Penn Station Partners team to build a mixed-use project.
Amtrak plans to invest up to $90 million for improvements at Penn Station as part of the planned redevelopment of the historic landmark.
Planning for a major redevelopment has been underway since January 2018 after Amtrak selected a team of design and construction firms to complete the overhaul. Amtrak said its investment will be used for expansion and modernization to accommodate passenger growth and to "significantly" improve customer service.
The first phase of rail infrastructure work at the 108-year-old station will include the renovation of an existing platform to bring it back into service and the construction of an additional platform.
Excellent! The cherry on the cake of improvements would be to move and replace the existing sculpture in front of the station (perhaps a modern art museum would like it?) and replacing it with a sculpture of Maryland natives and abolitionists Frederick Douglas and Harriet Tubman to greet passengers when they come out of the station.
The city is literally self destructing with miles and miles of abandoned buildings, and you want to waste money redoing a plaza that was just created 10 years ago. It looks fine just as it is and the sculpture outside is wonderful. There is already a museum and statue of Frederick Douglas in Fells Point.Excellent! That would be incredible, especially for the areas north of the station.Rumor has it that they plan on covering the tracks on the north side of the station and completely covering the Jones Falls expressway via re-do the main entrance to the station. Essentially the station won't be on a "island" anymore
