Basra to be the Next Hong Kong?

The Vice President of the Basra provincial council said on Friday that the visit of the U.S Deputy Defense Secretary to Iraq came to discuss the issue of attracting the foreign companies to work in Basra, according to a report from AKnews.

“An extended meeting between the U.S Deputy Defense Secretary and a number of members of the provincial council was held to discuss projects that could be implemented by foreign companies to improve the situation in Basra province in record time,” said Ahmed al-Sulaiti.

“The geographical position of Basra province qualifies it to be similar to economically developed countries such as Dubai, especially after it attracted a number of foreign companies, in particular those from Turkey, and promises to changing Basra completely.”

Sulaiti quoted the American official as saying that “The American companies could transform Basra to a city similar to Hong Kong because it has a lot of special aspects that are not found in other Iraqi provinces, but on the condition that all possible efforts should be done to achieve that…. The priorities of these projects are construction of roads and buildings and the improvement and maintenance of the infrastructure of the province.”

Well Basra is certainly capable of exceeding great success than what Dubai and any other bustling city has experienced, but it will take years to get there.
^^Why Saudi Arabia??, i have always viewed that as a more sensible UAE
Saudi's much better economically than "dubai" (not UAE). It has absolutely enormous local industries in all fields.

Dubai has a dozen shopping malls and some hotels... and lots of real estate condos built for foreign money launderers. its not a real economy!

of course for iraq, a hybrid of Turkey and Saudi economic development is ok.

We should rely on local labour rather than imported like turkey
we should use all our oil money for development and not for "current account" budget by the bloated bureaucracy.
Put up barriers to protect local iraqi producers from imports for 10 years to allow them to catch up to world standards
Change Iraq's governmetn to a standardisation body to maintain standards in industry, commerce, construction, manufacturing, farming etc...
Focus on developing iraq's "strength industries" as opposed to trying to be a "jack of all trades" or "self sufficient in everything even if we can't do it well or compete"

not rocket science really. But not dubai either, which is just so so wrong.
Why aren't you a politician?
i am neither a thief nor a retard.
More the reason to become one.
Well i certainly dont
