Brimstone Hill Fortress

"Built by slave labour in the 17th and early 18th centuries, Brimstone Hill Fortress was of great strategic importance to the British effort in the West Indies. The French successfully besieged it in 1782 but only held it for a year. A hurricane caused major damage to the structure in 1834 and it was formally abandoned in 1852 when masonry and wooden structures were removed. Now successfully restored, Brimstone Hill was far and away the single most impressive place we visited on this Caribbean cruise. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999."
