1. Emerging from Tiananmen East subway station, the gate with Chairman Mao's portrait awaits.

3. A small crowd awaits early in the morning.

4. Welcome!

5. A long walk to the ticket booths.

9. Some small exhibitions alongside that charge an extra fee, albeit small.

15. On my backside, smog.

23. The entry fee is a huge bargain at 40 yuan, or about USD$5

24. Some of the buildings are under construction. I don't remember seeing any such large-scale renovations on my last visit in 2003.

25. The hilltop pagoda at Jingshan Park is visible in the distance.

33. There is a Britain Meets the World exhibition that is free with the palace admission. It is located at the top of this gate with a nice view of the admissions area.

39. The exhibition was pretty nice, and now back on ground level ...

This is only a few steps into the palace. More photos to come!

For Olympic 2008.

I went to Beijing last year and the Temple of Haven just finished renovation and reopened. We all knew it's a historic building with a lot of history, but the paint made it looked too new and just didn't have that sense of historic. It looks a little better if the paint is kinda faded away.
