Farmland won't be misused: Buda

BELAGAVI: Belagavi Urban Development Authority (Buda) has clarified that it has not received any proposal to acquire additional land for housing.

The revised master plan-2 of Buda for the next 10 years was approved in February 2014. In the revised plan, Buda has extended its area, taking into consideration the city's development and population till 2021.

According to the revised plan, the total coverage area of Buda has been extended to 182 sq km, of which 82.12 sq km is set for conurbations.

Buda has prepared its masterplan-2 with approval from the government after a long wait of 30 years. However, some organizations led by Belgaum Shetakari Sanghatana (BSS) have been opposing the revised plan. BSS says Buda has allegedly converted fertile agricultural land for housing.

Speaking to TOI, Narayan Sawant, district president of BSS, explained that masterplan-2 includes several villages surrounding the city. The agricultural areas in these villages are shown in the white belt, which means they are unused land. Buda never specified these areas in the plan. This may result in land grabbing and put farmers in distress, he said.

According to Savant, apart from this, Buda also changed land use of several agricultural lands in city for parks, truck terminals, and public utilities without issuing any notification, he said. "We want the government to declare agriculture land in and around Belagavi city as special agro-economic zone," he said.

P N Ravindra, Buda commissioner, said the white-coloured areas in the revised plan do not necessarily mean that it comprises areas in the white belt. "Agricultural land will not be used for other purposes. Farmers need not worry. Besides, as per the land acquisition law, no land can be acquired without the consent of the farmers," he said.

The villages include in the revised plan are Halaga, Basavan Kudachi, Alarwad, Dhamane (S), Macche, Peeranwadi, Khadarwadi, Hunchenatti, Hindalaga, Kangrali (BK), Kangrali (KH), Goundwad, Kakati, Kanabargi and Yamanapur.

‘Splitting Belagavi not before government’

Excise Minister Satish L. Jarkiholi, who is in charge of the district, has sounded a discordant note on the long-pending issue of creating new districts out of Belagavi saying that the issue of splitting the district was not before the State government now.

His remarks come in sharp contrast with the recent statements of Revenue Minister V. Srinivas Prasad, who said that the district would be bifurcated to carve out a new district with either Chikkodi or Gokak as headquarters.

Mr. Jarkiholi said on Monday that two proposals would be submitted to the government soon to carve two new districts with Chikkodi and Gokak as headquarters, considering the demands of the local people. The Minister indicated that a new district stadium may come up in the city, as the lease period of the existing stadium would expire after ten years.

He said that nearly 60 per cent of encroachments of five main roads had been cleared by the Belagavi City Corporation.

Marathi theatre convention begins in Belagavi with grand note

BELAGAVI: Nightly fifth all India level Marathi theatre convention was opened with grand note on Saturday at Belagavi amid hundreds of artists from theatre, movies and soap operas and thousands of theatre lovers.

Faiyazz Sheikh, noted singer and versatile actress in her presidential speech, expressed concern over loosing charm of theatre especially children's theatre while addressing the gathering. Two- three decades ago, children's theatre movement was in mainstream. I gave my voice to several such plays performed hundreds of shows. That movement has slowed down and being neglected in these days, she lamented.

"I think children theatre is neglected due to increased entertainment choices for children like television, internet, movies and animated films, speedy lifestyle, burden of study, lack of time to go and see plays at theatres etc. Besides children's theatre, require more expenditure for costume. All these things made children to show back to towards theatre", she said. Shaikh said in these days children likes participating in reality shows on TV rather in theatre to become popular.

She opined the need of focusing on children's theatre and said Maharashtra government should take initiative in association of Marathi Natya Parishad in this regard by making financial provision and making availability of theatres in concessional rates. "Future artists will come from children's theatre so the responsibility of school teachers is vital in conserving this form of theatre", she said. She also highlighted problems in professional theatre and folk arts.

Former union minister Sharad Pawar, president of Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Natya Parishad (ABMNP) Mohan Joshi, secretary Deepak Karanjikar, Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) leader Kiran Thakur, Belagavi mayor Mahesh Naik and deputy mayor Renu Mutagekar, inception committee chairman Ashok Sathe and event coordinator Veena Lokur were present.

This before, Faiyazz Shaikh was brought to the main stage at CPEd Ground through Natya Dindi (theatre procession) of thousands of theatre lovers in an open car. Various attractive tableaux, youths and children in the attires of Chhatrapati Shivaji and warkari tradition grabbed the attention.

While welcoming the guests on stage, activists of MES began shouting slogans against organizers and disturbed the atmosphere for not inviting Kiran Thakur and mayor Mahesh Naik on stage. They stopped shouting after organizers invited both on stage. MES activists also disturbed the speech of Sharad Pawar by shouting pro-Maharashtrian slogans.

MES workers disturb Natya sammmelan

During the inaugural proceedings of the 95th All-India Marathi Natya Sammelan-2015, Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti workers started shouting ‘Jhalach Pahije’, the slogan used to demand the transfer of Bidar, Bhalki, Nipani, Belagavi, Khanapur and Karwar from Karnataka to Maharashtra, here on Saturday.

The workers were reportedly irked over the alleged neglect of their senior leader Kiran Thakur and the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor of the Belagavi City Corporation Mahesh Naik and Renu Mutakekar repectively.

The three were reportedly seated among the audience at the back and irked by this, the workers shouted slogans and calmed down only after the organisers escorted them to the dais.

The workers also wanted the Marathi Natya Parishad to adopt a resolution demanding that the towns and cities of Karnataka were moved to Maharashtra, something which Kannada organisations had warned against.
This happened in the presence of the former Union Minister and NCP president Sharad Pawar, who was there to inaugurate the conference, Conference president Faiyyaz Sheikh, MNP president and Bollywood actor Mohan Joshi and several personalities from the Marathi theatre and cinema stage were also present. On seeing the disturbance, Mr. Joshi stepped down from the stage and proceeded towards the workers. But, he was prevented and escorted back to the stage.

A senior MES leader said that the workers should pressure their Mayor and Deputy Mayor and councillors to adopt the resolution in the corporation.

Music arranger Keerthy Narayan’s Belagavi connection

The music album ‘Winds of Samsara’ by Ricky Kej and Wouter Kellerman won the Grammy Award 2015 under the ‘New Age Music’ category, the echo of which is resonating in Belagavi.

Originally from Kochi (Kerala), Keerthy Narayan, the music arranger for the album, settled here seven years back, since his marriage to a girl from Belagavi.

Proficient in keyboard, Keerthy Narayan played as well as made music arrangements for ‘Winds of Samsara’ which was the coordinated effort of 120 musicians from five continents. Herald Anthony, Francis T.S, Francis Xavier and Josekutty formed the strings section for the album, Krishna Kumar performed the Sitar, Biju was on the Veena, Gopi played Nadaswaram and Gayathri Suresh and Gopi Krishnan were the classical vocalists.

“My role in this was of a multi-instrumentalist and arranger”, said Mr. Keerthy while speaking to The Hindu on Monday.

He said that the ‘Winds of Samsara’ entered in the Bilboard charts to become No.1 in two weeks. This was mainly because of the sales of the album and user reviews. “It is a dream coming true, over ten years of hard work has been rewarded so wonderfully”, he said.

He recalled his association with Ricky for the opening ceremony music for the Cricket World Cup 2012, which was heard in 200 countries and was widely appreciated. The other albums where he has worked on with Ricky are: Fiery Drums, Indian Zen, Café Goa, Chillout Flute, Fuson, Indian Spirit, Krishna Lounge, Urban Grooves, Fusion Ganesha, Kamasutra Lounge, Mesmerising Santoor, Party Drums, Punjabi In the Club, Communicative art, Incredible India – North and South.

The instruments that Mr. Keerthy is familiar with are the Piano, Guitar, Bass and the Drums and the hardware and recording equipments.

“When it comes to music production, I arrange and programme every single instrument that can come to mind. I take time to understand every new instrument, research it and then use it in my music. I am familiar with all of the commercial DAWs that are used in music production right from music to post-production”, said Mr. Keerthy.

The multi-talented Keerthy Narayan has been a music composer/arranger with Hindi, Kannada, Tamil and Malayalam movies for over ten years now.

Army recruitment rally draws 7,500 youth in Udupi

National » Karnataka
Udupi, February 9, 2015
Updated: February 9, 2015 14:54 IST

The response was poor compared to North Karnataka

A five-day rally for army recruitment organised by the Indian Army at the District Stadium here from Wednesday to Saturday drew 7,500 youth, said Army officials.

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, Col. Vishwanath, Director, Recruitment, Mangaluru, said that the 7,500 youth who participated in the recruitment process underwent various physical fitness tests.

Of them, 350 were selected immediately. Another 350 youth were referred to the Command Hospital in Bengaluru for further fitness tests. Usually, nearly 50 per cent of youth who apply clear the tests.

The total number of youth passing the physical fitness tests is expected to reach 450. Next, these youth will have to pass a written Common Entrance Examination that will be held in Bengaluru, Mangaluru and Belagavi on March 1.

The Indian Army officials’ original plan was to organised the army recruitment rally in Chikkamagaluru. But due to poor response from the district administration there, the recruitment rally was shifted to Udupi. The Udupi district administration had fully cooperated with the army in holding the recruitment rally here, he said.

But when compared to the districts of North Karnataka, the response from the districts of South Karnataka for army recruitment was poor. Had the same rally been held in Belagavi, the response would have been 7,500 candidates per day, Col. Vishwanath said.

R. Vishal, Deputy Commissioner, said that the poor response in the districts of South Karnataka was due to lack of awareness. Hence the district administration had agreed to hold the rally here as it would create awareness. Once awareness was created, there would be a good response.

The last army recruitment rally was held here four years ago.

The youth should be aware that a sepoy or soldier in the army gets a salary of Rs. 15,000 per month, plus ration and other benefits amounting to another Rs. 5,000. After retirement, they get pension and could be recruited for other jobs, he said.

Army officers R.S. Chauhan, Dushyant Singh and Jaideep Sharma were present.

The Belagavi City corporation has always been lacking in the collection of property tax which is its main source of income
This time the Deputy Commissioner has asked the Corporation officials to to retake measurements of the tax paid by the citizens and verify if the same is correct or collect the difference....There are about 1,18,000 properties and the citizens pay the self assessment tax. A group of 3 people will evaluate 50 properties at least
