Security Watch India (SWI) has set up a training facility in Belgaum

SWI has set up a training facility at Belgundi village (5 kms from Belgaum city)

The facility spread over 200-acre was spearheaded by Harry Dhaul, director general, SWI. But, these guards won’t come cheap. They would have to be paid perhaps upto Rs 1 lakh a month! That’s what one may have to pay for a well-polished and well-rounded and educated security personnel. The private security guards industry employs about 7.9 million people. But, nearly 99 per cent of them are said to be poorly or ill-trained.
The facility can house and train about 120 people at a given time. Now, “the Maharashtra government has approached the SWI to train about 500 security personnel,” said Dhaul. SWI serves as a link between homeland security stakeholders to communicate policy reforms and industry standards for security.

P S Sandhu, IG, Belgaum region, said Karnataka alone needs a police strength of 540,000 to keep with the globally-agreed ratio of one policeman for a population of 222. Going by this, Karnataka needs to recruit another 400,000 policemen.

State rural BPOs get pro policy push

The state government is keen on nurturing and consolidating the 32 ventures they have floated under the rural BPO scheme, Department of IT, BT, S and T and e-Governance Principal Secretary M N Vidyashankar said.

Institute of Management (IIM), has enabled rural BPOs to “shake hands” with major IT companies such as TCS, Wipro and others.

Linking with IT majors

Following suggestions from IIM the government has also reduced the number of employees mandatory under the scheme from 100 to 30, besides linking them up with IT majors.

“The BPOs are facing problems expanding their business and finding a growth trajectory. Linking them up with IT majors will enable entrepreneurs to take advantage of market reach and channels of these majors. We would like to see these BPOs succeed and set the example for other states,” Vidyashankar said.

“We provide services like voice and non-voice services, data entry, transcription, video transcription, data mining, scanning, back office support and telemarketing etc,” said Outsourcing Through Rural Arena (OTRA) Technologies Marketing Head Amitsen Jabannabar, part of four-man venture based in Sankeshwar, Belgaum.

With 100 persons, his company deals with six customers and is in talks with an American based company for online data mining services

Technology no more limited to Tier I cities, Small towns produce fast-growing tech companies: Deloitte survey

Technology is no more limited to Tier I cities now, according to consultancy and advisory firm Deloitte.

In the latest list of the 50 fastest-growing Indian companies in the Technology, Media & Telecom (TMT) space, Deloitte said 14 percent of the Technology Fast 50 winners this year are from Tier-II cities such as Rudrapur, Belgaum and Madurai

These include Chella Software, Madurai; Think Furniture Technologies, Rudrapur; ZNet Technologies , Jaipur; Indusface Consulting, Vadodara; Elan Emerging Technologies, Ahmedabad; Vayavya Labs, Belgaum; and Atline Technologies, Salem. Vayavya Labs, for instance, focuses on providing tools that enhance the productivity of embedded system designers and programmers.

The Deloitte Tech Fast 50 India saw 31 new entrants in this year's list. In 2008, 27 companies were in the Rs 100-crore revenue category; this year it is down to 12 companies. About 38% of the companies were in the below Rs 50-crore category in 2008; that has gone up to 62% this year. "This clearly shows the dominance of SME players," said P N Sudarshan, senior director, Deloitte India.

Belgaum heritage building spared axe

The government declared the historic building at Risaldar Galli a heritage one following a report in The Times of India (Belgaum heritage building faces axe, October 17). Swami Vivekananda stayed there for four days in October 1892.

Freedom fighters like Jawaharlal Nehru, Lala Lajpat Rai, Annie Besant, Chittaranjan Das and Sarojini Naidu held meetings there during the Indian National Congress session in 1924 which was chaired by Mahatma Gandhi . Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore also visited it.

A part-owner of the building , Vidyadhar Vishnu Belavi, had planned to demolish and sell his portion. A public notice was published in local newspapers on this.

Following the TOI report, urban development department secretary ordered the Belgaum Urban Development Authority to declare the building (CTS No-3553 B) on Vivekananda Marg a heritage one under the Karnataka Town and Country Planning Act-1961 . This was done following the instructions of law and parliamentary affairs minister Suresh Kumar.

Ktk legislature session from Dec 5

Bangalore,Oct28 (PTI) Karnataka government today decided to convene the legislature session from December five here. The government hitherto held the winter session in Belgaum. A meeting of the state cabinet here took a decision to this effect. The session will continue till December 16, Law Minister S Suresh Kumar told reporters. The cabinet decided not to revive the Legislature Committee, a demand made by Congress MLC, K C Kondaiah in the last session of the upper house and also confine itself to the existing legislation of holding legislature session for 60 days annually, Kumar said. Higher Education Minister and leader of the Upper House V S Acharya had promised opposition that their demand for a 100-day session would be placed before the cabinet for discussion in the last session, he said. The cabinet, which discussed it, resolved to adhere to the existing legislation of 60-day session, he added. During this year, the government has held legislature session for 22 days. The coming session will be of ten working days, which indicates that it would not be possible to touch the mark of 60-day session this year.
