The EWAY will likely go through the interesting Holywood Arches bit where they expose the river.

It is also a major road junction which will, or at least should require either a bridge or subway for the buses to go over. If a subway is built then the river will have to be diverted, if a bridge is built it might overshadow the river.

The Connsbank link is worrying though, it requires the shrinking of the football pitches by the Oval and I can't see the river paths being treated any more fairly. Don't really see the necessity of the road anyway.

What an excellent video. Never realised part of the scheme included a lock bypassing the weir, particularly as they have it sited where the Queen's Quay development was lol. Also, the redevelopment of Stranmillis Weir can't come soon enough- it really will open up the Lagan Meadows, and make it much more accessible from Annadale Avenue.

I run up that tow path at least three time a week. Some of this is great news, but I have concerns about the quietness being spoiled for ever, and disturbance to the wild-life. I just don't trust "them" to get it right. Hope I'm proved wrong.

Lock gates at the Lock keeper's refurbished lodge are nearly complete, and (for a change here) it looks like they are well made, using good materials. So far, so good then.

A mostly ignored project on this site, but for me one of the most exciting ones. The Lock gates just beyond the Red Bridge now appear to be complete, with some earth works in place further downstream ready for construction of the next set. Will be really nice to see barges once again making their way along this most lovely stretch of waterway. I'm up here frequently, so will post news of any new developments.

Will be really nice to see barges once again making their way along this most lovely stretch of waterway. I'm up here frequently, so will post news of any new developments.
I was out for a run along the towpath on Tuesday- noticed the area around the red bridge. It looks really well. I was in London recently, and the train from Stanstead runs alongside a canal for a good part of the journey and the barges really did look tremendous- like you i can't wait to see them back. What are the plans for the bit of river in and around Shaw's Bridge (my hopeless computer isn't running the video earlier in the thread which might have explained it) as it will certainly require a good bit of work to allow boats to pass through.

I suppose unlike a lot of green spaces it is almost all pleasant parklands, and bar a golf course or two it's completely open to the public- no farmer has riddled the place with barb wire to keep away the townies. It's the closest thing we have to something like Richmond Park in Belfast and I don't think you will hear much support for it to be developed on.

There was a scheme to build a restaurant in Edenderry village on the banks of the Lagan. Residents objected to it, as did the USPCA because there were otters in the area. I'm not sure how genuine the fears of wildlife were. But Edenderry is a pleasant place and I would have thought bringing some visitors to the area would have been a good thing. After all riverside pubs are ten a penny across the water.

Indeed, the idea in itself is a good one, obviously the area needs to be protected from invasive development that would harm wildlife, but a river economy is also required if money is to be channelled into protecting and improving the areas.

Edenderry is one totally random area, happened to be working there with a mate last week, 1st time id ever been to the place and thought it was a totally random place to build a few streets

Don't know the history of Edenderry, but there was once a lovely old mill building complex there, and the houses were probably provided for the workers. I believe the mill was burnt and demolished to make way for a new development, in typical NI fashion. (correct me if this is not right)

Industry makes return to Lagan Canal as an old friend barges in



A barge that once carried coal supplies along Ulster's waterways is back on the Lagan Canal for the first time since 1946. The Lagan lighter, built in 1871, is now moored close to the Lock Keeper's Cottage in south Belfast as the first stage in a major restoration programme.

For years it had lain half full of stagnant water at a marina on the River Shannon, until it was tracked down by Brian Cassells, president of the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland. He had been asked by Castlereagh Borough Council to source one of the original lighters.

Now that the barge – 'Industry' – is back where it once served, its restoration will be completed later this year.

Industry will then house an exhibition focusing on the history of the Lagan Navigation, the workings of the locks, and the living conditions of the lighterman and his family. The exhibition will include a Bolinger engine, although the barge would have been pulled by a horse.

The barge will also be available for private hire.

The vessel passed through the hands of numerous owners during its long service between the 1870s and 1940s.

The council bought it from Hilary Boylan, the widow of a man who once navigated it on the Lagan.

A 1920 document indicates that it was owned by Lambeg Bleaching & Dyeing Co when it is believed to have gone into the Portadown Foundry for modifications.

The Industry was owned for a time in the early 1930s by the Irish Peat Development Co, which may have had a peat extraction works at Maghery. In May 1934 it was carrying coal for the Antrim Iron Ore Co.

On March 31, 1941, Industry was skippered empty by J Milligen to Lough Neagh when the consignee was 'Ministry Shipping'. It is understood the vessel was requisitioned at this time for the war effort.

On May 21, 1946 it made two trips to the Naval Armament Supply Officer at Belvoir Park – one empty and one with 34 tons of stores.

Supported by the Lagan Rural Partnership through the Northern Ireland Rural Development Programme, the project aims to increase provision for visitors in the area by enhancing the heritage and tourism offer. Castlereagh mayor Jack Beattie, said: "I am thrilled that Lagan Canal Restoration Trust discovered the barge and it can be returned today to its rightful home on the Lagan Navigation.

"It is hoped the barge will not only add a nostalgic feel to the area, but it will also complement the existing facilities on site and provide visitors with an exquisite piece of Northern Ireland history.

I wish to thank the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the European Union for funding the project, and also the Lagan Rural Partnership for their continued support."
