Berbera Airport's new terminal is currently under construction:

Very much reminiscent of these historic buildings in Zeila:

Im very excited about this project. I only wish the building were bigger and several storeys higher.

I commented in another thread some weeks back:

I just came across this picture of a new building U/C in Berbera and although it isn't a building that is particularly impressive due to size or architectural innovation, what does make it is interesting, however, is the inspiration evident in its design. If you look carefully at this building it'll become clear that its design is inspired by the old Adalite buildings in Zeila. And much like in the Adalite buildings, locally sourced stone has been used for the façade. The similarity between the buildings is striking!

The centuries old Adalite buildings in Zeila, which was the capital of the Adal state.

This is the building under construction:

The older style makes it look centuries old. But it's not. :eek:kay:
I like how they're using adalite architecture. Very nice.

Berbera doesnt see a huge amount of traffic, now that Hargeisa is fully functional. Its a secondary airport mainly for Larger Aircraft who need its long runway. Actually I prefer a compact Terminal as long as it is well kept and furnished. They should really make the interior look like a proper Airport this time as they have a blank canvas to work with. Proper seats, Flight info screens, branded check-in desks, uniformed well presented, well trained staff, nice buses to transfer people to and from the aircraft and a proper VIP lounge. It would be nice, but if Somalis are in charge of providing all of that, isn't going to happen.

Berbera is the Mogadishu of the north, no other northern city has the same deep seaport/airport infrastructure as Berbera. Though I think its great that they have fashioned the new terminal after medieval architecture, to be honest a city of that caliber with this immense potential should aim for something much bigger considering the amount of intercontinental traffic of ships/planes.

See Marrakech Airport for a good blend of history & modern while respecting the city's ambition/potential.

^^ As long as A/C isn't common and there isn't a more open minded mindset amongst many of the people in that city, it's not going anywhere. My 0.02.
A/C could be a big money maker in the Somali towns/cities close to Djibouti - the latter as well because of the humidity. The new mall in Hargeisa is filled with lavish furniture pieces yet none of those entrepreneurs have clocked the idea to add a air conditioning sales section that could be transported to other cities or towns by road.

Your forgetting that Somalia has some of the highest electricity costs in the world, and this is very restrictive to business. Also, if your going to sell air-conditioning units, you also have to train or import engineers in case of eventual breakdowns.

There are affordable solar-powered air conditioners that bypass that obstacle which is ideal for a hot place like Berbera. Yes, Somali companies of all sectors will have to train or import engineers if they want to grow their business. This is a fact in any part of the world not just exclusive to us brother.

If there is a will.....

Nice pics. Are there any aerial pics of the building? Frankly it doesn't look anything like an airport terminal. The first pic is weird as well...where does that promenade lead to??
Sweet, like it alot. Keepin in style with the local buildings.
with kind of money they were given by the Kuwaiti gov and with this result it s money not spent well.

10 million dollar ayaa la siiyey dowlada somaliland inay ku dayactirto airportka hargeysa iyo barbara dhismooyin waa weyn ayaan ka filaayey.not waxaan u ek primary school.
I don't know why, but the top of the building looks unfinished. The could put an extra level in the future for restaurants, cafes and shops or just for offices.

Can anyone elaborate why the Berbera Airport and the longest runway in Africa is not operational? According to the media, all traffic has been diverted to Hargeisa and Burco Airports until further notice.

Meanwhile only private jets owned by Emirati officials and shady businessman have been landing at the airport this month.

The Somaliland Government needs to be re-open the airport to commercial airlines immediately, especially the two Somaliland owned airlines African Express and Daallo should be encouraged to continue daily flights.
