Hi,

I am moving to Berkeley in Fall and I would be tankful for any information. I would be working at the UC.

I would like to know which are areas are safer, cheaper, ... where are the cafes, the shops, ... how much do you have to pay for rent, Internet, ... do I need a car.

Thanks in advance.

There are very few cheap places
Cafes/shops are everywhere, especially close to campus
Don't need a car unless you live a sig distance away

I live in Berkeley.

There aren't any really dangerous areas in the city anymore, however, the highest violent crime rates are (or were a couple of years ago) in South Berkeley west of Adeline Street.

There are no cheap areas. Try looking at craigslist.org to get an idea of what rents are like.

Cafes are everywhere except in the hills, which are completely residential; and the Berkeley end of Solano Avenue, which only has a starbucks and a tiny peets coffee store.

Whether you need a car or not depends on the neighborhood. Anywhere within walking distance of UC or a BART station would work. I live near Solano Ave without a car and would not recomend it.
