The Port of Berwick is the second largest Northumberland Port, handling in excess of 150,000 tonnes of cargo (with capacity to handle significant additional tonnage) and around 250 shipping movements annually.
Berwick is situated on the eastern border between Scotland and the North East England, at the mouth of the River Tweed, which defines the historic Scottish Borderland.
Its coastal position places it equidistant from the Rivers Forth and Tyne.
Berwick is a modernising Trust Port, which has been established for over 125 years. The Harbour Master and staff see to the needs of incoming shipping and provide a friendly and flexible service to all Port users.
There is easy trade access to all the northern European ports including the Baltic, Mediterranean and beyond. Incoming cargo is transported by road. The main A1 road is situated less than ten minutes away from the Port, serving the North & South of the United Kingdom.

The Mayor of London will visit Berwick today, to lend his backing to the Dual the A1 Campaign.
Conservative Boris Johnson, who will fight to become MP in Uxbridge and South Ruislip in the forthcoming general election, will throw his support behind the project.
Anne-Marie Trevelyan, the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Berwick and the director of the Dual the A1 Campaign said; “I am delighted that the Mayor of London has taken time out of his busy schedule to support the campaign. We have secured a massive investment of £290m to improve the road but the campaign does not stop there, the ultimate aim is to secure full dualling right up to the border.”
Ms Trevelyan has been having on-going discussions with the Department of Transport, the Highways Agency and other stakeholders as the details for the initial phases are being worked up. She said: “I have called for the enhancements on the A1 north of Ellingham to take place at the same time, if not before, the actual dualling. Specifically, we have identified locations in the vicinities of Warenford, Cheswick and Mousen for overtaking lanes. I am also pushing the case for urgent junction improvements to be made between the A1 and roads towards Newham Hall, south of Warenford, the B6348, at the staggered cross roads from Low Middleton to Middleton, heading south east towards Elwick, south of Buckton, between the B6563 and the road towards Fenwick Granary and heading west towards Lowick Mill, south of Haggerston Castle.”

The full extent of the economic crash and its lingering effect on the North East housing market is revealed in new figures.
Detailing the sale prices of all housing from flats to detached homes between 1995 and 2013, they show how they rocketed by an average of 191% to 2007 and have since fallen by 2%. The Office for National Statistics figures are based on the region’s 30 electoral constituencies. Of them, 21 - more than two thirds - have seen a drop in sale prices since 2007, while eight have gone up and one - Blyth Valley in Northumberland - has flatlined at 0%. If the rate of inflation is factored over the six years covered, none have actually seen an increase.
Our probe revealed that perhaps the hardest hit constituency was Newcastle East. From 1995 to 2007 the average price of house sales rose from £49,000 to £149,500, a huge 206% increase. But from 2007 the average sale figures dropped by 9.3% to £136,000.
In neighbouring Newcastle Central house price sales soared by an astonishing 243% from £39,000 to £134,000 to 2007 but dropped back 7% to £124,500 in 2013.
In the Middlesbrough constituency sale prices rose 182% from £32,375 to £91,500 to 2007 and have since dropped 5% to £87,000 in 2013.
Sunderland Central saw a 207% increase from £38,000 to £117,000 followed by 4.2% fall to £112,000.
And in Northumberland, Berwick saw a massive 243% rise from £48,500 to £166,584 to 2007 followed by a 7% fall to £155,000 to 2013.
However the best performing constituency is Hartlepool. The average sale of all house types rose 187% from £36,500 in 1995 to £104,950 in 2007. Since then they have risen again by 10% in 2013 to £115,495.

A senior government minister has rejected pleas to intervene in a controversial office development.
Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Eric Pickles has opted against ‘calling in’ Northumberland County Council’s decision to approve its own development company’s bid for office space in Berwick.
Town residents who had opposed the scheme had pleaded for him to step in - and now one is now threatening a judicial review. Arch lodged plans to demolish the Kwik Save store on Walkergate and to build a 1,415 square metre office development in its place. The scheme is the first phase of the planned redevelopment of the whole site, which has been derelict since 2006.
However, a petition with 678 signatures accused the council and Arch of a “lack of vision” and said the site would be “lost as an opportunity to truly help regenerate Berwick.” Berwick Town Council and Berwick Civic Society were among seven other objectors, with concerns over the impact on Berwick’s Conservation Area.
However, the county council approved the scheme.

An MP says he has been given assurances that a court is not to close, despite the scaling back of its administrative functions.
Staff at Berwick Magistrates Court in Northumberland have reported that its office is to “close” with the site to operate as a “satellite” administered from Newcastle Magistrates’ Court. Yet national bosses have insisted there will be staff in the office three days a week when a court is sitting.
Berwick MP Sir Alan Beith, who has campaigned for the future of the court in the past, has revealed he has had assurances about the future of the site, although he has called for vigilance, warning “there is a danger that administrative decisions will be taken down on Tyneside without regard to the needs of Berwick and rural north Northumberland.” In December, Liberal Democrat Sir Alan voiced fears that Berwick court could be undermined by proposals to cut the number of magistrates courts circuits in the North East. He warned the plans could lead to “inappropriate transfers of cases from Berwick, reduced use of the Berwick court, transport problems for witnesses and the undermining of the principle of local justice.”
Court bosses have said they continue to keep the use of their estate under review, that any new proposals would be subject to consultation and that the “exceptional geographic location of Berwick Magistrates’ Court will continue to be taken into account if any change is considered in the future.”
An email sent in the name of Berwick court manager Janis Hartley has now claimed the “administrative office at Berwick will close from April 1, 2015.” It states that Berwick “will continue to operate as a “satellite” court administered from Newcastle Magistrates’ Court.” An HM Courts and Tribunals Service spokesperson insisted the office would continue to be staffed on court days.

A Border town is marking the role of local soldiers in two First World War actions exactly one hundred years on.
Berwick in Northumberland is hosting events on Saturday and Sunday to commemorate the role of local soldiers in the Gallipoli landings and the Battle of St Julien, on April 25, 1915.
That date was the first day of the ill-fated Gallipoli Campaign in which the 1st Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers, which had its headquarters at Berwick Barracks, landed at Cape Helles. On the same day, the local Territorial Army unit for north Northumberland, the 7th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers took part in the Battle of St Julien, near Ypres on the Western Front.
A programme of displays, re-enactments and talks has been organised to mark the anniversaries and to illustrate Berwick’s contribution to the First World War at home and abroad. This morning from 10.30am to 11.30am, Berwick Library is hosting a launch of a collection of poems by Thomas Grey, the town poet who was writing at the time of the First World War.
An exhibition in Berwick Town Hall explores aspects of war life in the community and on the frontline, and the stories of local people during the First World War. Other displays include stands from the Cittaslow Berwick and the Woodhorn Trust First World War projects, and the North East War Memorials project. There will also be opportunities to handle artefacts and find out about life in the army and the role of women volunteers.

A Northumberland town stepped back to the Middle Ages for the Bank Holiday weekend.
Around 100 re-enactors from three societies based in northern England and southern Scotland descended on Berwick to recreate everyday life in the period and stage demonstrations of crafts and cookery, archery and combat. The Raiders and Reivers event is part of Our Border Story in the Berwick 900 Festival programme and provided an opportunity for people of all ages to find out how our ancestors lived.
St Cuthbert’s Land represented the time, 900 years ago, when Berwick became one of the first royal burghs of Scotland. It soon grew to be Scotland’s richest seaport and a cosmopolitan town full of foreign merchants exporting local wool, grain and other products and importing raw materials for the industries in the Tweed valley, cloth from Flanders and luxury goods for the court of the Scottish kings in Edinburgh.
Members of St Cuthbert’s Land showed the craft skills and everyday life of the time. Knights in Battle, who have their base in Yorkshire, depicted the high Middle Ages and the Wars of the Roses.

History groups in Northumberland are demanding answers over the closure of the home of a town’s archives.
The Berwick Record Office is to close next month as part of Northumberland County Council’s rationalisation of its assets in the town. Bosses have revealed it will reopen in the town’s library in October, with disrupted access to the important historical documents in the meantime. The site is home to 16th century Tudor documents and has been involved in events celebrating 900 years of Berwick history and 500 years since the Battle of Flodden.
On the back of the news, history groups have sought assurances about the long term plans for the archives, hit out at the lack of notice given for the move and claimed it is “ironic” that access to them will be restricted in a year when the town celebrates 900 years.
The record office is a branch office of the Northumberland Archives and is managed by the Woodhorn Trust on the council’s behalf.
A statement from the trust said: “As part of the reorganisation of Northumberland County Council’s property in the town, Berwick Record Office will move from its existing location in Wallace Green to Berwick Library. The record office will close on June 8 to allow the move to take place and will re-open in the library in October. This is a major piece of work with many thousands of archive records relating to the history of Berwick to be carefully moved. “As a result there will be some disruption to the public service between June and October. A further announcement will be made concerning the interim arrangements. Berwick archivist, Linda Bankier, will continue to support volunteer groups in the delivery of the many heritage projects that the record office is involved which include Berwick 900, Flodden 500 and others.”

On the back of the news, history groups have sought assurances about the long term plans for the archives, hit out at the lack of notice given for the move and claimed it is “ironic” that access to them will be restricted in a year when the town celebrates 900 years.
The record office is a branch office of the Northumberland Archives and is managed by the Woodhorn Trust on the council’s behalf.
A statement from the trust said: “As part of the reorganisation of Northumberland County Council’s property in the town, Berwick Record Office will move from its existing location in Wallace Green to Berwick Library. The record office will close on June 8 to allow the move to take place and will re-open in the library in October. This is a major piece of work with many thousands of archive records relating to the history of Berwick to be carefully moved. “As a result there will be some disruption to the public service between June and October. A further announcement will be made concerning the interim arrangements. Berwick archivist, Linda Bankier, will continue to support volunteer groups in the delivery of the many heritage projects that the record office is involved which include Berwick 900, Flodden 500 and others.”

An eyesore derelict building at the heart of a border town has been given a new lease of life thanks to an ice cream seller.
The former JJ Youngman store in the centre of Berwick in Northumberland had been allowed to fall into a state of disrepair. Buy local ice cream seller Dave Blackburn contacted the site owners in a bid to get something done. He has now led a team of artists in creating a colourful mural on the outside of the building.
The disused building was left with its windows boarded up on the town’s main Marygate shopping street, leaving town residents disgruntled. The site was one of several derelict buildings in the heart of Berwick which prompted fed-up Mr Blackburn, who for more than three years has travelled around the historic walls of the town on his tricycle selling ice cream to visitors, to take action.
He contacted site owners who agreed to allow him to paint the hoardings on the outside of the building, Mr Blackburn, who was last week elected to Berwick Town Council, carried out weeding at the site before giving it a lick of paint. He put out an appeal on Facebook for artists to help him create a mural and received several offers. The Girl Guides Association also agreed to join in. The outside of the building has now been brought alive with colourful scenes of animals and depictions of Berwick.
Mr Blackburn said: “It really is a great example of what can be achieved with community interest and support, and an example of how we might deal with eyesore issues in the future. This is what a community can do if they pull together. It has not cost anything other than some time and labour.

Northumberland College bosses said they are looking for new premises in Berwick-upon-Tweed to reduce the numbers of those living in and around the town having to travel south to be educated.
The statement came amid concerns students would no longer receive free travel to the college’s sites in the south of the county, ahead of its introduction of a network of buses which will not call at the town. They feared the buses were being providing in place of the free travel passes students have received up until now and that youngsters would have to pay to use public transport to get to the college’s sites at Ashington, Kirkley Hall, Hexham and Blyth.
But the college has insisted free travel passes for bus or train will be provided where needed in addition to the new network. In its statement, principal Marcus Clinton said: “For 15/16 academic year we have put in a complete new transport network for the county, offering many more routes and connecting points to public services and also the flexibility to alter routes to pick up as requested. These routes advertised included options to take students up to the North of the county and provision in Berwick as well as south to Ashington and Kirkley. These routes are free for 16-18 yr old students. The college plans to expand provision in Berwick and is seeking new premises urgently. Until then, there are some subject areas requiring students to travel south to Ashington/Kirkley - the new free transport network is designed to also connect with rail services (also free for 16-18) at Morpeth with connecting buses to Ashington/ Kirkley. We believe this offers the best solutions and flexibility for all but will also consider individual cases using other public transport if that offers better journey options which we will also fund for 16-18 year olds and can consider part funding for adults dependent on individual circumstances.”
The college currently has the Main Centre, Construction Centre and Hair and Beauty Salon in Berwick. It also provides a range of work-based learning options and Higher Education in Early Years in Berwick.

Crowds gather at Guildhall Berwick to celebrate 900 years of Berwick upon Tweed history with a rope that travels right round the town
From hopes of a slush shop and a KFC opening in town to memories of a railway station, visiting Granny for a feast and getting money for a lost tooth.
Nine hundred such hopes and memories written on cards hang from 900m of rope which winds its way through the streets of Berwick-Upon-Tweed. The rope and messages were in place as the centrepiece of celebrations of nine centuries of Berwick .
The first records of England’s most Northerly town are from the year 1115, meaning it is 900 years old in 2015. The border town has perhaps the most eventful history of any community in the North East, having changed hands between England and Scotland 13 times.
From Thursday until Sunday, a host of activities took place around Berwick to mark the special occasion. The Great Performing Rope was hoisted to mark the history of the rope industry and rope walks of Berwick, with the first ropery established in the town in 1752. Attached to it were the writings of locals and visitors on their hopes for, and memories of, Berwick. The route of the rope came alive with a series of performances from musicians, storytellers and more over the course of the celebrations.
At the opening ceremony outside the Guildhall on Thursday night, local schoolchildren performed a sea shanty written especially for the activities.

A Northumberland food factory has been earmarked for closure with the potential loss of 265 jobs.
General Mills, makers of frozen dough products, has announced plans to close its site at Berwick-upon-Tweed, with approximately 265 staff affected if the closure goes ahead.
The company says the site could shut its doors by autumn 2016. Consultation is now to take place with union officials and employee representatives.
A statement issued by the company said: “General Mills today announced a proposal which could lead to the closure of its manufacturing facility in Berwick, United Kingdom. The proposal is subject to consultation with union officials and employee representatives, which could lead to the closure of the site by the autumn of 2016. If implemented, closure of the site would affect approximately 265 employees. The Berwick facility manufactures baking mixes and refrigerated and frozen dough products. It has been operated by General Mills since 2001.”
Berwick Conservative MP Anne-Marie Trevelyan is aware of the situation. Her spokeswoman said she has “requested more information on nature of proposal and support for staff.”

Plans to build a 60-bedroom hotel and restaurant in Northumberland on the site of a former historic cinema have been approved.
Premier Inn submitted proposals in May to build a four-and-a-half-storey hotel on Sandgate. For the best part of 90 years the site was occupied by the Playhouse Cinema. However, it was demolished in 2010 having been "disused for some time".
Northumberland County Council has now approved proposals for the new hotel, which will cover 26,600 sq ft and comprise 22 double bedrooms, 18 triple bedrooms, 17 quad rooms and a further three unspecified rooms.
The hotel operator said the construction cost of the project would be £5m and take a year. The scheme is expected to create 77 full-time jobs during construction, as well as 39 upon completion.
A report to planners at Northumberland County Council said: "There are also clear economic benefits that would arise from the development of this vacant site within the town centre, which are a material consideration in determining the application having regard to delivering sustainable development." However, the same report noted that the project raises a "number of key material planning considerations" and stated that there "have been objections raised, particularly in relation to the effects of the proposed development on existing businesses and residents".
Despite this, it said: "Following assessment of the proposals, and having regard to all of the submitted information and representations received, it is officer opinion that the proposal would result in an acceptable and sustainable form of development on this vacant town centre site that would provide social, economic and environmental benefits. The site is vacant and untidy in appearance and there is an opportunity to enhance and redevelop an important and environmentally sensitive location within the town centre."

A former JD Wetherspoon pub in Northumberland has been snapped up by a rival firm after being put on the market in a bumper boozer sale.
The Leaping Salmon in Berwick upon Tweed was one of three in the North East – including Newcastle’s Union Rooms – which was part of the portfolio of 45 venues placed on the market earlier this year by property agents on behalf of the UK food and drink giant. All jobs have been saved and an investment programme will soon begin. The deal value has not been disclosed
Stonegate Pub Company, which owns more than 650 pubs across the UK have now moved into the Berwick pub having acquired it from JD Wetherspoon, following the for sale signs going up in May this year. Stonegate said the change of ownership represents a fresh chapter and new opportunities including significant investment, which is being planned for the first half of 2017.
The Leaping Salmon closed last weekend while JD Wetherspoon move out and Stonegate move, in ready for reopening at 5pm on Friday, October 14.
Chief executive Simon Longbottom said: “We have a strong track record in picking sites that when we add a touch of Stonegate magic, customers love. We are already planning the next stage of the pub’s future with investment which will enhance the pubs offer and we’re looking forward to revealing those plans in the coming months. In the meantime it’s a huge welcome to the pub’s team and loyal customers whom we look forward in continuing to serve.“

Two new multi-million pound leisure centres have been given the green light by Northumberland County Council.
They will be built in Berwick and Blyth after the current facilities in the towns were deemed not fit for purpose. It follows plans to build another leisure centre on the riverside site in Morpeth, which will house a new town library and a council customer services centre.
Council leader Grant Davey said: “I am very aware of the demand and need for 21st century leisure and culture facilities in both Blyth and Berwick, particularly to ensure the wellbeing needs of our communities are served correctly. “Blyth Leisure Centre is 60 years old and while Berwick is newer, the concept of joining steel frame buildings to form a single unit has led to an itty-bitty look that has many undesirable features for modern use. Both buildings were built for their time and are not up to the current standards that our residents deserve for modern leisure and culture use. I am delighted to report that this administration is now actively searching for two suitable sites. Just like with our new Morpeth scheme, we would like to involve local residents in giving their views on the sort of facilities they would want to see included.”
Berwick North councillor Gavin Jones welcomed the development and said it is one of the most significant investments in the town for years. He said: “Good quality modern leisure facilities are extremely important for health and wellbeing. I look forward to working with the council and the local community to establish exactly what sort of facilities they would like to see here.”
Lorraine Dewison, chief executive of Active Northumberland which runs leisure services for the council, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for residents in and around both these towns, who really need 21st century facilities. Northumberland will benefit from having the largest number of high-quality leisure facilities in the North of England. Health and fitness combined with better cultural opportunities will improve people’s lives while the increased tourism helps the county’s economy.”

Council leader Grant Davey said: “I am very aware of the demand and need for 21st century leisure and culture facilities in both Blyth and Berwick, particularly to ensure the wellbeing needs of our communities are served correctly. “Blyth Leisure Centre is 60 years old and while Berwick is newer, the concept of joining steel frame buildings to form a single unit has led to an itty-bitty look that has many undesirable features for modern use. Both buildings were built for their time and are not up to the current standards that our residents deserve for modern leisure and culture use. I am delighted to report that this administration is now actively searching for two suitable sites. Just like with our new Morpeth scheme, we would like to involve local residents in giving their views on the sort of facilities they would want to see included.”
Berwick North councillor Gavin Jones welcomed the development and said it is one of the most significant investments in the town for years. He said: “Good quality modern leisure facilities are extremely important for health and wellbeing. I look forward to working with the council and the local community to establish exactly what sort of facilities they would like to see here.”
Lorraine Dewison, chief executive of Active Northumberland which runs leisure services for the council, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for residents in and around both these towns, who really need 21st century facilities. Northumberland will benefit from having the largest number of high-quality leisure facilities in the North of England. Health and fitness combined with better cultural opportunities will improve people’s lives while the increased tourism helps the county’s economy.”

Less than a week after Berwick was awarded the prestigious Coastal Community Team status by the Government, an ambitious new Economic Plan for Berwick has been launched.
A meeting has been held where business, civic and community leaders debated which major projects can be developed and then submitted to the Department of Communities and Local Government by the end of March 2017. The projects will form the basis of The Berwick Economic Plan which will now be finalised following further engagement with partners. The Plan will identify deliverable and practical projects aimed at improving the town’s economy in future and potentially help to secure an allocation from the £90m national Coastal Communities Fund as well as other major funding and resources.
The meeting included positive discussions about previous and current initiatives. There was recognition that for Berwick to be successful a common agenda is needed based on the economic strengths and wider reach of the town. Proposals can then be developed in collaboration with partners in North East England and the Scottish Borders.
Proposals discussed include establishing a better offer to businesses and visitors, and new skills and cultural facilities particularly to support young people in the town. Focus was also on the need to develop regionally significant infrastructure including full dualling of the A1, Berwick Borders Heritage [email protected] Barracks and assets including the new Enterprise Zone, the Harbour and waterfront, town centre and other important cultural and commercial opportunities.
The Coastal Community Team for Berwick is currently being established with Berwick Community Trust, Berwick Town Council and Northumberland County Council working together to finalise the set up plans which will be announced in due course.
Julien Lake, Chief Executive of Berwick Community Trust said: “This is an excellent chance for Berwick to set a new course by collaborating and all pulling in one direction. To be a Coastal Community Team means all the key agencies in Berwick working together to make our town grow and prosper. We are looking forward to playing our part in developing this exciting new initiative.”

Berwick Old Bridge is set to close to vehicles for up to two weeks from Monday 3rd April for essential investigations into the overall condition of the historic structure.
The work is part of Northumberland County Council’s masonry arch improvement programme and the information gathered will enable the council to design a scheme of restoration work aimed at securing the long-term future of the iconic bridge.
In 2015 the council successfully secured £6.7million in government funding to repair 130 masonry arch bridges across the county. The County Council was one of only 28 councils nationally whose bids were approved. Northumberland has a higher than average proportion of masonry arch bridges with an average age of over 170 years.
Taking action now is estimated to save over £60million compared to long term reconstruction costs. On Berwick Old Bridge pedestrian access will be maintained at all times and the bridge will be fully reopened in time for Friday 14th April and Easter weekend. An alternative route via the Royal Tweed Bridge will be signposted for use during the closure. While the Council appreciates that the works may cause some short-term inconvenience, the work is vital to protect the bridge for future generations.
Councillor Ian Swithenbank, Cabinet Member for Local Services, said: “We are committed to keeping our road network in good condition and this includes repairs to bridges which carry thousands of vehicles each day. We understand the importance of minimising disruption and will be dedicating extra resources to this scheme, including working weekends, in order to reopen the bridge as soon as is practicably possible. We hope that residents, visitors and businesses will bear with us during this essential closure.”
The council has liaised with key stakeholders, including the local traders association, and has agreed to do this work before the start of the main holiday seasons.

The long-term future of a Northumberland coastal town’s port will be secured thanks to a £2m grant.
The Government has pledged to support the Berwick Harbour Commission’s project to rejuvenate the Port of Berwick.
Berwick MP Anne-Marie Trevelyan said the cash will improve the existing lead-in jetty to the Tweed Dock and boost tourism in the town. The project is expected to create up to 70 new jobs once the work has been completed.
Ms Trevelyan said: “I am delighted the Coastal Communities Minister, Andrew Percy MP, has ensured that the project has secured coastal communities funding. It is thanks to the hard work of Alan Irving, Berwick Harbour Master, and his team that their deserving application has been granted approval. his is a real boost for Berwick’s future and the town’s ability to attract investment and create jobs in the future. I would like to thank Andrew for allowing me to meet him to explain in person the benefits of this scheme and its importance to Berwick.”
Berwick currently provides port facilities to a range of producers and employers, including Simpsons Malt. The future of the port had been under threat after the Victorian jetty’s condition deteriorated over the years and it now needs to be replaced.

The famous landmark crosses the River Tweed from Horncliffe in Northumberland to Fishwick in Berwickshire.
When it was officially opened in 1820, it was the longest wrought iron suspension bridge in the world. However, over the years the structure has become unsafe and can only be accessed by one light vehicle at a time.
The council is working with the Scottish Borders Council and the Friends of Union Chain Bridge to safeguard the future of the bridge. A funding bid for its restoration is now being prepared for the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), with a maximum of £5m available towards the bulk of the work. It is hoped that the conservation and engineering repairs can be completed by 2020 - the 200th anniversary of the bridge’s opening.
Coun Glen Sanderson, the council’s cabinet member for environment and local services, said: “The bridge is of international significance but its condition has been of growing concern for a number of years. Along with our colleagues in Scotland we are committed to safeguarding its future and status, both as a key transport link and as a contributor to the local tourism economy. The site investigation work is vital ahead of any major project starting and engineers will be working to keep disruption to a minimum throughout.”

A town’s captured piece of Russian firepower has returned to its ramparts location after restoration work. The conservation work will protect the cannon from harsh coastal weather conditions, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
English Heritage’s only Russian cannon, made in 1826, was gifted to Berwick in 1858 as a trophy of the Crimean War. Made in Alexandrovski in Russia, the cannon bears the imperial arms of Russia, and has a shot weight of 18lbs, while the top of the barrel displays a Russian double-headed eagle. After being captured at Sebastopol in the Crimea 1856, the gun was set on a carriage specially constructed for it to a Russian pattern by the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich.
This was commissioned following talks between the military in Berwick and Secretary Major-General Peel of the War Office in 1858, on the occasion of the Government’s proposal to no longer use the town as a military station. A War Office letter specified that the gun was to be treated with great care, saying the cannon is to be a “trophy of the late war, for the correct mounting and careful preservation of which General Peel feels confident that he may rely on the public spirit of the inhabitants of the place”. The cannon survived the scrapping drive for metal in the Second World War when it was considered too important to be destroyed. But that fate befell all the other Berwick town walls guns, which were melted down to aid the war effort.
The Russian cannon was removed on June 6 and transferred to a specialist workshop based in Wales. The harsh coastal environment in which the cannon is situated meant that the protective surface paint previously used on the gun had deteriorated significantly, resulting in metal corrosion on the gun and the carriage.
Leesa Vere-Stevens, of English Heritage’s collections conservation team, said: “This significant cannon has been carefully preserved throughout the generations. As part of English Heritage’s on-going conservation works, we are continuing that process to keep the cannon in Berwick as an example of how the war was commemorated and remembered in the 19th century.”
