The Ritz-Carlton, KL is Best Employer in Malaysia 2005

In a tight labour market, employees have the luxury of picking who they want to work for.

While money is an obvious pull factor, human resource specialists say that frequently the desire to work for an employer who actually values its people and creates a work environment that challenges and inspires is a key pull factor too.

In that case, 10 organisations in Malaysia can expect a flood of applications the next time they advertise for people.

The Ritz-Carlton, Kuala Lumpur has been named Malaysia’s number one Best Employer in the Best Employers in Malaysia 2005 study, conducted by global human resources services firm Hewitt Associates, in conjunction with the Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute, the Malaysian Employers Federation, and The Edge (Malaysia).

Alan Parker, head of Hewitt’s Malaysian operation, said: “While Malaysia’s economy is traditionally one of the stronger in Asia, it is facing challenges in growing its business through talent.

"CEOs of Malaysian organisations shared with us that increased competition, employee motivation, engagement, and commitment are significant factors that will impact their organisations’ ability to succeed.”

Parker further commented that this aligns with some of the key people issues CEOs experience in Malaysia today, most notably:

* Attracting and retaining the right talent, particularly as their employees are well sought after due to their brand presence in the market;

* Instilling and maintaining a highly motivated workforce through constantly shifting times; and

* Having the right leadership in place.

The Best Employers in Asia study reveals that Best Employers demonstrate three common characteristics. They:
* Consistently inspire great performance from their people;

* Go out of their way to ensure employees feel valued; and

* Manage their business in ways that build long-term success and sustainability.

It also revealed that in order to build a strong, successful, and sustainable business, it is crucial for companies to achieve the following:

* For leaders to earn the trust of their people;

* Deliver outstanding service consistently to customers;

* Ensure a continuous pipeline of effective talent; and

* Create and manage high-performing cultures.

A total of 244 organisations and nearly 70,000 employees participated in the Best Employers in Asia 2005 study, the third Hewitt pan-Asian Best Employers study, which researched participants in China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand.

In Malaysia, 36 companies and more than 10,000 employees participated. Twelve different industry sectors were represented, with the greatest number of companies coming from the fast moving consumer goods sector.
