Did they like destroy old buildings to build skyscrapers and offices in this area or it was just empty place in Paris?
No, it wasn't and is still not in Paris itself, it was partly an unhealthy slum, but there were also old houses, industries affected by the bombing, a local funfair. Everything was voluntarily razed to apply Président De Gaulle's dream of bringing France into the world of modern business, a gigantic project that took more than 30 years between the destruction of existing buildings, terraforming, construction, creation of the slab and the passage of the motorway under it. He was very interested in American culture, he was interested in all areas of architecture (automobile travel, airports, skyscrapers, modern relocation, shopping centers ...) and La Défense is typically the French American dream that desired De Gaulle.
