Just curious, I always forget to ask about this, but I'm on a South Shore train going to South Bend. On the left there's a huge old clock tower-ish building around 111th, it looks like its abandoned, but maintained. What building is that? Does anyone know?

That's the administration building of the old Pullman factory. It burned in Dec. 1998. In a bit of pandering to the community, the state convened a task force and then poured money into restoring the exterior of the administration building with the vague hope of creating some kind of "history center and cultural tourism attraction." I suspect that all ground to a halt when the state entered its current financial crisis.

For some reason, I can't find the photos I took during a tour of the under-restoration building a few years ago. Here's the exterior, though:

i've always wondered what that was myself, interesting

Interesting, that whole area looks interesting, there's a stop at 113th, I'm going to have to check that out if I have time on the way back, I'll see if I can get some pictures for you guys.

As far as it looks now, it looks like what Mr. Downtown posted, they have the exterior restored at this point and it's impressive looking.
