I thought we could do with a thread that allows us to put all the news about BCC in one place.

Starting off is MSP's post on the Official Birmingham Thread:

The Post reports that the Planning Dept have to get staff numbers from 273 down to 190 or did you all know that?

And also - the BBC are reporting that Hammersmith & Fulham, Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster Councils are looking at merging all of their services so that they just have separate elected bodies, but share everything else from social services to Chief Executive, education to street sweeping. They would be the first 'super council'.

It got me thinking - should Birmingham, Solihull and the Black Country do the same, especially with housing, education and transport?

Part of the reason I moved out of Birmingham into Solihull was that the council tax was cheaper.

When I lived in Birmingham I was fed up with all those silly schemes the council came up with, which all drove up council tax.

So I moved to Solihull, where the council had a much more sensible attitude to spending the their (our) money.

The last thing we want in Solihull is to take on Birmingham's burden of years of financial mismanagement (for example how much is the recent legal decision about underpaying women workers going to cost Birmingham council).

If that is OK we will leave it as it is.

I've never heard that one before. You're joking right?

There isn't much in it and is hardly a deciding factor in buying a house. £100 difference per annum perhaps?! Anyway, Birmingham Council Tax is now currently lower than both Solihull & Sandwell.

Think this may be a good place for this:

Eric Pickles pledges 'referendum first' on elected mayors for Birmingham

Oct 22 2010 By Jonathan Walker

Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles has pledged that Birmingham residents be asked whether or not they want an elected mayor.

He told MPs: “We will follow the will of the people.”

Mr Pickles contradicted his colleague Bob Neill, a junior Minister in his department, who previously revealed the Government planned to create a mayor first - and hold a referendum afterwards.

In a recent interview, Mr Neill said voters would be asked ‘we have set up these things, do you want to stick with them?’.

It followed speculation about the meaning of Government plans for a “confirmatory referendum” on creating powerful directly elected mayors in England’s 12 biggest cities, including Birmingham and Coventry.

But Mr Pickles said the plan was to hold referenda first, and only introduce mayors if local people wanted them.

Asked in the Commons if he would create a mayor before a referendum, he said: “Of course we will not - that is completely out of the question.

The proposals will be subject to referendums. “Once we know the views of the people in those 12 cities, we will move on to the election of a mayor if people vote for that.

He added: “This will be subject to a referendum.”

The Government wants to create powerful elected mayors to replace council leaders and take direct responsibility for overseeing council services.

I think Brum will go for it...

... if we can get the turnout to make it a valid result.
