Liverpool’s Hope Street Hotel owner unveils £5m expansion plan

LIVERPOOL’S Hope Street Hotel today unveiled plans for a £5m expansion.

The Hope Street Hotel founder and chief executive Dave Brewitt has bought the adjoining derelict listed building complex.

He intends to convert the former Blind School, Trade Union & Unemployment Resource Centre and Flying Picket bar over the next 18 months.

Mr Brewitt said: “This is the right time to start on the project, so we will be running when the economy finally picks up.”

The £5m scheme will include 40 serviced apartment bedrooms, gastro-pub, bistro, chocolatiere and coffee shop, a restaurant which it is hoped can reach Michelin standard, a spa and offices.

The complex, built between 1851 and 1931, is opposite the Philharmonic Hall and Dining Rooms on the corner of Hope Street and Hardman Street.

It will increase the floorspace of the original 89-bedroom Hope Street Hotel by about 40% but it is uncertain if the hotel’s brand will be used for the new expansion.

The hotel itself will not be expanded but it will manage the serviced apartment rooms.

While not revealing how much the Grade II-listed buildings cost him to buy from the estate of the late Wirral developer Gerry White, Mr Brewitt said it was “slightly above” market value.

Given it's own thread as technically it is not the Hope Street Hotel.

Great sounding development. A sound investment by the man, securing his own business and extending new facilities into the area. with LIPA buying the building adjacent to their campus there are a couple of good schemes coming on stream right now.

All we need is for this guy to buy the JBH murder scene and do something great over there too.

Good that building needs something doing with it.
This is great news, it's such a waste of a prime location/building at the moment.
So chuffed about this, it's a great building that everyone can see from the Phil and will look amazing when finished and cleaned.
I agree. A good couple of days, all told. This, the CLT, Alder Hey, the Metropolitan, Merseytravel HQ, Festival Garders.

Happy days.

It might be time for a mid term review of the 2012 review thread you created.I'd do it myself but I can't remember half of what's happening sometimes.Maybe highlight were we've made progress and delete things like the Green Bank and add anything new etc.:)

Excellent news, it's been a bit worrying that such a grand collection of buildings have been out of use for so long. This is very good news for Hope Street.

I actually did that with a notepad during an insomnia bout recently. I'll dig it out and put it online in the coming days.

 thanks.
Didn't the Blind School form part of the pre-Canning Place Merseyside Police HQ? First drinking in town in my late teens I used to admire the NI-style grenade nets protecting its basement, although the force had already relocated from there.
