In dog years, they are doing very nicely

"THERE'S NO PEOPLE that are friendlier than the Australians, so let's do as the Ossies do and be nice to one another." That's what Brooke said to Ridge and the select members of her family who made the cut for the great anniversary tour on their first day in Sydney. Brooke and Ridge walked right past the Opera House, nine times.

Sydney's amazing that way. To celebrate a long and vital run of 20 years, The Bold and The Beautiful crew came Down Under and shot every scene with the Sydney Opera House in the background. The exterior of the Stamford Plaza took a beating as well. When Phoebe Forrester ran distressed from the hotel in her cossie, one arvo (I picked up all this lingo from Brooke, or Brekky Central, can't remember which) without a sanga or any plonk, she was at Mrs Macquaries Chair within seconds. Thank God she had the Sydney Opera House to guide her home, like Hansel and Gretel with the bread crumbs.

B&B had a confusing take on Double Bay. Its faux proximity to the Bridge is obviously just a creative judgement, but the dirge-like sound of surf, birds and didgeridoos in Cross Street, Double Bay, set up a most confusing week's TV.

The visit Down Under was long overdue. After all, the Forresters are practically Tasmanian. A Forrester hasn't married a non-Forrester since Bridget married Nick Marone but it turns out his half-brother, Ridge Forrester, was really a Marone, so Nick is an inadvertent Forrester, don't you think?

Dr Taylor Forrester is now married to Nick Marone, after being married to his half-brother Ridge for more than 20 years, followed by a short engagement to his other half-brother Thorne (Forrester, natch!) which never would have happened if Taylor hadn't run over Thorne's wife with her car, after too much plonk (Thanks, Brooke, for the Strine). Now Taylor Forrester and Ridge Forrester's daughter, Phoebe Forrester, is in love with Rick Forrester (another of Ridge's half-brothers, right up until he turned out to be a Marone.)

The Forresters don't get out much. They only marry each other and even when they take that private jet halfway around the world, they very rarely leave the hotel room set and when they do, never stray more than 50 metres from ... the Sydney Opera House.

More interesting than their Tasmanian tendencies is their ability to breed in dog years. Nick has just married Taylor and they are starting a family - right there at 4.30 in the afternoon. Taylor already has three children: 18-year-old twins and a son in his 20s. Before that she was married to Ridge forever. Before that he was married to Brooke and before that she was married to Ridge's pretend dad, Eric, and before that Ridge was married to somebody called Carolyn. Given that Taylor was already a qualified psychiatrist (aged, say ... 30) when we met her, wouldn't she now be 55 and not planning a new family? I think those twins of hers were babies when I was first pregnant. Well, the twins are 18 and I have an eight-year-old. As Ugly Betty would say, you do the math.

Taylor isn't credible. She looks spookily young enough to start her 17th marriage and family. If it wasn't for that set of chicken livers attached to the middle of her face where her lips used to be, Taylor would look exactly the age that everyone in The Bold and the Beautiful is, once they leave school. Taylor is 34.

A few short years ago, Brooke's kids were young enough to have a wayward babysitter who married teenager Rick. Now Rick is 28. The show has only been going for 20 years and I clearly remember Rick being born in the mid-90s.

Taylor is 34. Brooke is 34 and she has a 28-year-old son. Stephanie is built like one of those freezers that hunters keep for storing venison and she is not 34 but has survived death and the decomposition of her marriage at least twice a year since the show began.

Can any of us look back on the last 20 years and claim to have achieved as much? The Bold and the Beautiful is only rivalled by The Simpsons for quality and longevity. Somebody at Ten did good in 1987. Let's hope Big Brother doesn't display the same endurance.

No, Sydney made it when Alexis Carrington/Joan Collins flew to Sydney in an episode of 'Dynasty'. ;)

Dynasty. I have a family member who named their child after the Alexis character, and the child has turned into a right royal little bitch too. Figures.

I saw one of the episodes over @ my mum's place, and it was true that the SOH was virtually in every shot. I said to mum "Yeah, that's all we do here is stand with the Opera House always in the background" :eek:hno:

Channel 10 News ran a story on it (obviously to double up as an advertisement) the week before the episodes aired, using footage of the "stars' " visit @ the time when they were filming it here in January.

No great surprise there - it's not exactly the most realistic show on television. :D

P.S. At your Mum's place - yeah, right. More like at your place, with the phone off the hook. ;)
