Really excited by the new Arena for hull, that the council have been talking about, even though the purpose of it to host the BAFTAs seems way too optimistic.

Apparently the council are looking at a large derelict city centre site.

Where could possibly be big enough for this to go. Albion Square? It would be a tight squeeze but may just fit in. The Edwin Davis store would have to go.

there's been talk of an arena on the old LA's site for a while. i think the whole BAFTA headline was beyond the point. the main point of the HDM article for me was that the council are trying to find a sponsor to cover the cost. unfortunately i can't see any sponsorship deal been worth enough to cover the cost of building an arena.

and to be honest i think anything bigger than 6-8,000, with a well thought out system for reducing the capacity down to 4-5,000 would be unnecessary.

^That site has definitely been discussed. The space is likely large enough at a push, but probably unsuitable. Can you imagine the access issues? Spring Bank and Anlaby Road are hell at the best of times.
Hull set for £30m concert arena as it bids for Brits and Baftas

A NEW £30m concert arena and hotel look set to be built in Hull as part of the UK City of Culture 2017 celebrations.

The Mail can reveal the entertainment complex will boast a capacity of about 8,000 in the hope of attracting some of the country's biggest music artists and showbusiness events to the city.

The arena has been earmarked for one of two derelict city centre sites, both owned by Hull City Council.

Work on the ambitious project could start next year, creating hundreds of jobs in its construction alone.

A senior source at the Guildhall said: “I have no doubts that Hull is going to be the most prosperous city in the north in five years’ time.

“I still hear people questioning whether Hull can compete on the big stage but we can – and we will.”

The Mail revealed last month how Hull was already a leading contender to host the Baftas in 2017, bidding to become the first city outside London to host the event attracting some of the biggest names in film and television.

Although Hull appeared to have been ruled out of hosting the Brits, where Beyonce performed and winners included David Bowie, Ellie Goulding and the Arctic Monkeys at this year’s event, a new arena could see it back in the running.

It would also rival the new First Direct Arena, formerly known as the Leeds Arena, which officially opened in September with Sir Elton John playing to an audience of 12,000. The concert venue in Leeds has also staged acts including Kaiser Chiefs, Rod Stewart and Bruce Springsteen.

A city council source said: “We aim to have some of the world’s biggest bands and music artists come to Hull, not just in 2017, but beyond.

“It will be unrecognisable and a city we can all be so proud of.

“It is about building a legacy and making the most out of the UK City of Culture year.

“We can achieve anything when we set our minds to it. We have finally been given a huge platform to achieve things because of the UK City of Culture status. It will be the most prosperous city in the north.”

The concert arena and hotel would be funded through sponsorship and from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.

It would be separate to the proposed Olympic swimming pool and leisure suite that could be built in the city, as revealed by the Mail last month.

Staging the Brits had been all but ruled out for Hull due to its lack of a big enough venue, but this latest development has given the city’s bid renewed hope.

The new concert arena will hold 5,000 seats with a large area for guests to sit at tables or stand during a concert.

The council source said: “This is an absolutely crucial and huge week for Hull.

“By the end of it, we could be in pole position to be hosting the Baftas and the Brits.

“It is a long way off, of course, but with this new proposed arena, we suddenly have a great chance of bringing so much to our city.

“As soon as we won the UK City of Culture, we wanted to set our aims very high and that’s exactly what we have done.

“I’m sure the people of Hull will be excited with the direction the city is taking.”

8,000 is a good size, similar to Nottingham. The LAs site has always been mentioned when this has come up but as suggested on the hdm comments the quay west site would be spot on. I wonder what it would mean for ice arena and the hockey lot though?

Nottingham is 10,000 which itself is rather small compared to other national arenas. I think that would have to be the minimum capacity for it to be able to attract acts. Why go out of their way to Hull when they can go to leeds and/or Sheffield. That's the problem that Hull faces, especially if it is a smaller capacity. But really hope this is pulled off and works nevertheless.

I've always thought that Hull needs an O2 Acadamy type venue with a capacity with 2-3000 for smaller acts. Both would be excellent! I can dream...

Perhaps a 8K arena, with a smaller room for 2k would be the answer.

or make the main room of the arena easy to turn in to a 4k arena with a dividing wall cutting the arena floor in half.

as for location, i'd go for the Quay West site, better access to the Motorway (when the A63 is upgraded) and within walking distance of the train station and bus station, and the Marina/Old Town would become the go to area for pre and post gig drinks.

Quay west would be a very prominent site. It could also be linked in some way to the harbour deck of Princes Quay which would stimulate the take up of remaining food outlets.

But the problem is that the catchment area of Hull is similar to that of Plymouth/Norwich/Southampton and not Sheffield/Leeds which people keep saying we should be competing with. But we still should be able to support a smaller sized arena.

Some saying re we aren't big enough etc..but i think if the product is good enough then people will use it in big numbers. The acts at the First Direct in Leeds are very impressive. That has been designed to cater for numbers from only 1500 to about 12-13,000. It is an excellent plan though and probably vital for 2017. Hopefully it will get a big boost if the BBC say/hint we may get something big when they visit next week. As for a sponsor!!!! got to be you know who, and they do specialise in sponsoring the arts.

Ive looked at the location of both Newcastle and Sheffield arenas and both look to be in the middle of industrial areas and not really connected to the city centre in such as way as to improve the nighttime economy.

Its good that the council are looking at one or two city centre sites. I believe Albion Square is a little too central and restricted on all sides. But somewhere like the old LAs site and the waste land behind would offer the best of both worlds in terms of a central location but still with space for parking. St Stephens would want it there thats for sure.

Good news that it's getting closer to happening, didn't know there was going to be a hotel onv the arena site as well.

Yeh, I think it is set to be on the Castle Street side of the development, and is a 10-12 storey tower block, so should be quiet prominent.

Hmmmm interesting... Especially the sneak peak of the castle street footbridge!
New renders and details have been released regarding the arena. The capacity has looks to have been scaled down to 3,500 - is that enough to attract the big name acts? Still, the renders look quite good and it's certainly an improvement on what the council already has as venues at the moment. Also quite a shame it's been left so late as it won't be ready for 2017.

More about it on this link, including the vast amounts of people complaining as usual like every single development that gets featured in the HDM:

its a bit bland and a bit small. 10-12k the HDM numpties were wanting a few months ago would be bonkers, but 5-6k would have been great. witht he death of the ce hockey team the ice arena could be on the way out in the next few years i'd have thought. it must cost a fortune to operate and it has little use.

i think the un-mentioned positive of this is the improved appearance of castle street. i think the importance of making castle street look modern isn't realised. it's the only part of the city a lot of people will see, it's the city's shop window. this, princess quay, the bridge, marina, marina court, the c4di area and trinity quays would be a great corridor if all the proposals come off.

Appearance may be important, but who are they going to get to run it? I think that's they key issue here.

If HCC have a hand in the running of it, then it will be run into the ground very quickly. If they can manage to get a franchise in..? May need a large subsidy (I maintain that Hull just does not have the catchment area), then we may see reasonable success..

We certainly won't get numerous big names/upcoming acts weekly like other venues of a similar size get..

I miss the days where we could go to Lamp/Adelphi/Welly/Sillouettes to see an upcoming band, but for most that was just a trend and that trend has died..

This morning on radio Humberside the councillor responsible for this said 6/7 companies in line to run this, with cost to council of approx 100k per year in running costs (significantly down on initial costs to council)

As for the venue it self.. Assume these aren't the final designs... We'll see what the planning application. has in store. But the bit that is interesting is the "outside performance space" guess we'll be seeing a new venue for some of the freedom fest!
