Taken today when it was opened for a public walk through. This tunnel joins up with the existing Queen St tunnel.
It allows busses from the North and West to go right into the middle of the city.
The project also includes 2 new bus stations, one under King George Sq and the other at Roma St railway station.

Up on the surface - Ann St entrance, there is a good history wall here with pictures and details of Brisbane in WW2.
During tunneling they found an old civil defence bunker from the war.

When I went through (I arrived at Roma St station at about 1:30pm I think it was and it took a few mins to walk through it) and I noticed how ugly the train lines really look from that angle, like a big open sore... the busway wasn't as long as I thought it would be, but it was pretty sweet :D

Before I had a really wierd/strange idea, what if they had built each busway so that on each side is a pedestrian footpath? Just an idea :D

Great pics, thanks

^^ Be fair, they are really rather good pictures! Thanks for showcasing them, I look forward to riding this in June.
Just because they are good quality photos it does not mean that it deserves it's own thread over all the other photos posted on here.

Because its a new piece of infrastructure that opened today :bash:

Brisbane is going tunnel mad these days - with billions more under construction.

These are great facilities - well done!

Get over it.

Oh dont be so pathetic. You must be from railpage. If only we got something like this for our bloody o'bahn buses in the city, so we could have a thread too.
Anyway, nice pics
O-Bahn what a joke. I live at Modbury, would rather a 3000 class train than those shitty dangerous old buses.

Well I agree with you there.
I think its a great idea to put a lot of city centre buses underground like in Brisbane. They avoid the traffic congestion in the typically narrow CBD streets, and they save the pedestrians from the awful noise, and smoke that come from buses when they accelerate from stops of lights.
I reckon Melbourne CBD traffic noise level is much quieter than Sydney due to trams being so quiet compared to the average diesel bus
its a $330million project, its worthy of its own thread, im not suprised someone from adelaide would'nt be able to comprehend pt threads.

anyway, fantastic photos, i cant wait to take a tour of that area, i should be back in Brissie later this year, cant wait to see this project.

From the photos it seems the busway station is pretty well intergrated with Roma Street Station, is this the case or is it a bit of a battle?
TOCC- Yes the Roma St Station integrates very well, and goes right next to the train line. All one station, just 2 platforms (inbound and outbound) are for buses. In the bit where it goes next to the trainline then suddenly down into the tunnel, it reminds me of the Bit of busway between Southbank and Melbourne St (where buses do 100m of on street) where its next to the train line one moment and under it the next!

I think its an excellent busway. It makes me wonder why they didn't make the Boggo Road Busway all tunnel with an underground station at UQ Lakes and Dutton Park and tunnel deep under the uni to the other side, with a simple pedestrian/cycle bridge over the river. :) at least they got this one right.

As for everyone else- Can we please stop talking about Failpage (which IMHO is a waste of internet bandwidth) and get back to the topic?
Looks very nice :)

lol TOCC you say $330m like its a big thing :p Thats such a small number these days.
It's a small number within a multi billion dollar tunneling plan - but its a benchmark day.

Wasn't it you who started a thread about Ballina Airport with a couple of generic photos from it's website??
Nice pics AB. I just wish they had the Cycle Centre open, I really wanted to check it out.
Thanks AB, I knew I could count on you for photos! I wasn't in Brisbane yesterday so didn't get to see this. Thanks heaps.

One gripe I have about this segment of busway is the lack of shoulders in the tunnels. The tunnels on the other busways have 2-metre shoulders so that in the event of a breakdown, there is just enough room to maintain two-way bus operations.

That's why government is proposing to redevelop Roma Street station and the surrounding precinct. This would cover the tracks with buildings and parkland, and create several additional pedestrian links from the fiveways/College Rd/Parklands through to Roma Street:

I wonder when they will build the Countess Street busway station here? Surely the redevelopment of Caxton Street/Victoria Barracks would strengthen the case for this...
