Don't know the answer myself...but perhaps this topic would fit under the broader umbrella of the "spontaneous discussions" thread. I will merge the two a little while later...
Call up BTCL, they provide DSL up to 2MBThose of you residing in Dhaka, what is the max broadband speed available to the general public?
My parents who live in Uttara Sector 5 have a slow poke connection from a provider who touts their service as broadband although it's slower than dialup. They have a real hard time downloading any photos or videos I send from the US. I'll readily sign them up with a service that can provide at least 256KB/s or better service.
When I worked at Motorola, I heard about a company that provided NLOS(Expedience/WiMax) wireless service in Dhaka. I don't recall the name and don't know if they are still in business.
As long as there is substantive discussion...more than happy to keep it separate.no need to merge, it should be a separate topic.

Is Tk3000/month too expensive? I pay slightly more every month for cable broadband internet service in Ann Arbor. The higher speeds are insanely expensive for households, however its a different case for offices.
I would be willing to pay it but most of the adults in Bangladesh do not even understand the nescessity of internet, they are at most willing to part Tk.1000 for their kids (who mostly use it for facebook). I recommend it be mandatory for every Bangladeshi to spend a month in this website to increase general knowledge :drunk:Is Tk3000/month too expensive? Based on Bangladesh's par capita income Tk3,000/month is way too high.A middle class government employee only earns around Tk9,000/month..Is Tk3000/month too expensive? I pay slightly more every month for cable broadband internet service in Ann Arbor.
You know what, after I discovered this website a few days back, I've been pimping it to everyone I know: friends, relatives, coworkers, you name it. Some of my American colleagues just can't believe the photos of BD I showed 'em. Really gets me when they have this perception that we come from a slum of a country stacked on top of one another. Even the Indian consultants here at work are awed at the progress BD has made and also the natural and scenic beauty of the countryside.... I recommend it be mandatory for every Bangladeshi to spend a month in this website to increase general knowledge .
dont you get it they dont want people to have such facilities, they impose a 900 taka tax on sim cards thats like a 900% taxBased on Bangladesh's par capita income Tk3,000/month it is way too high.A middle class government employee only earns around Tk9,000/month..
In order to have IT revolution the cost needs to be brought down to TK 500/month along the line with our neighbors. Otherwise only 10-20% upper middle class can afford the service.
thats cause the govt doesnt want people to use itYou know what, after I discovered this website a few days back, I've been pimping it to everyone I know: friends, relatives, coworkers, you name it. Coming back to broadband, I thought the submarine cable was going to usher us into the 21st century mega speed realm. Why hasn't that been the case? Our internet penetration is still way behind all the other SAARC countries, may be slightly ahead of Afghanistan :ancient:
Well, if it is only the "kids" use, then I do not see much utility nor productiveness. How many Bangladeshi kids are messing around on facebook looking for love as opposed to a forum like SSC? I rest my case.I would be willing to pay it but most of the adults in Bangladesh do not even understand the nescessity of internet, they are at most willing to part Tk.1000 for their kids (who mostly use it for facebook). It is expensive indeed. I do not think the price will go down to that level unless the government subsidizes broadband access.Based on Bangladesh's par capita income Tk3,000/month it is way too high.A middle class government employee only earns around Tk9,000/month..
