I've got some questions still.

1. Do they count only continuous built-up area and what are the criteria for it? I mean does for example a park divide this area or not? Or a river.
2. Are there any data on how many buildings here are in each of cities? I'd like to see figures related to heights.
3. It would be very interesting to compare Chinese cities to other cities in the world as these figures are the only accurate and they do describe the real size of the city.

Here's my understanding. I don't think it only counts the continuous area of the city; If a park has built-up public facility it should be counted. I don't think they have official data on building #s in the data source.

The data comes from China City Statistical Yearbook 2013 so it's official. But people can alway compare it with your own measurement from Google earth professional.

i.e. Nanning

How did you do that?

I've got more questions. A couple of years ago I came across another set of statistics: the number of building in Shanghai. It was for the year 2010 I think. So, probably there should be one more updated.

In which source?
Do Chinese city governments possess official data on the number, roof and floor area of the buildings permitted to be built and exist?

Not me, I copied them from a local forum.

That must be stats from local authorities. I'll see if I can find those in latest version.

My source is China Statistical Yearbook 2013 and Chinese Cities Statistical Yearbook 2013. They provide data but it's not so detailed as to building level. I don't know whether or not the data you mentioned is available or published.

Big-dog, I'm reading an article on Wikipedia now, it's in Russian and it says built up-area of Chingqing is 1473 sk km which is far more than the figure you provided.

Chongqing's build-up area is a controvercial topic. First Chongqing is built in mountains and hard to measure; Secondly and most importantly Chongqing annexed several cities/counties since 1997, some of these new areas are under rapid development and build-up area is changing fast.

My perception is Chongqing's build-up area should not be more than 400 as of now since many areas are still being built. But the figure is getting bigger fast year by year.
