Building up to a 19.9B year in city
Rev up the bulldozers - a record $19.9 billion in spending on city housing, office and public-works construction is expected this year, said a New York Building Congress forecast released yesterday.
The number of private-sector construction jobs could reach 140,000, which also is a record, said Building Congress president Richard Anderson. That's a big increase after last year's dip to 107,300.
Commercial construction will rebound - with 11 major Manhattan office projects getting under way or in the works.
And the city's residential construction boom should continue - at nearly the same pace as last year, when the number of housing units built topped 25,000 for the first time since 1972. This year, about 23,000 units will be constructed.
