It's Elland Roll!
By Paul Robinson

BRITAIN'S biggest casino operator has set the ball rolling on a bid to bring a touch of Las Vegas-style glamour to Leeds United's Elland Road home.
Bosses at Stanley Leisure have just lodged an outline planning application for a multi-million pound gambling complex behind the ground's Revie Stand.
The firm paid United £5m in October 2004 for first option on the seven-acre site, which at present is occupied by vacant warehouses and matchday car parking spaces.
Stanley's submission to the city council says the development – currently being referred to as Circus Casino – would create 300 jobs in what it describes as a "relatively deprived" part of Leeds.
The documents also say it would boast a huge gaming floor, in-house restaurants and bars, conference rooms and an entertainment show lounge.
Yorkshire folk hoping to find a fast track to riches at the Elland Road casino shouldn't start dusting off their chips just yet, however. If the outline application is given the thumbs-up by the council, more detailed plans would also have to be approved before work can begin.
In addition, it is thought the success or failure of the scheme could depend on the outcome of the city council's attempts to land the country's first super casino.
Jackpots
The YEP reported earlier this month how the city was one of 27 places nationwide seeking permission to provide a location for the so-called "regional" attraction.
It will be the only one of its size allowed in the whole of the UK under the terms of the Government's Gambling Act 2005, and will have hundreds of slot machines offering jackpots of up to £1m.
However, Leeds has indicated that if it misses out on the main prize, then it would want to be the home of one of eight more large casinos that ministers are preparing to license.
They will be bigger than the current norm, but smaller than the regional complex – and Stanley's planning documents say its proposed development would fall into that category.
If Leeds did win one of the large licences then there is no guarantee that it would choose the firm to build and operate the new gaming centre, or even pick Elland Road as its site.
l Stanley's submission also reveals that experts believe Leeds could have as many as 21 casinos by 2011. At present there are just four – one on Merrion Way in the city centre, two on Kirkstall Road, and another on Street Lane in Moortown.

Would love to see the regional Super Casino in Leeds - would be great for tourism BUT....
Blackpool practically has the 'Super Casino' in the bag if you ask me...
If not I'd guess Brighton or London would be close favourites...
Castleford also has an application for a 'Super' regional casino (only 1 mile outside the 'Welcome to Leeds' signs so practically Leeds anyway...

Sorry to be a pedant rhino, but it should read "Casinos in Leeds". Just a minor bugbear of mine! Dunno, maybe it's just me...or maybe not. Witness the phenomenal success of "Eats, shoots and leaves"!

When in doubt leave the apostrophe out :)

I think his quite extraordinary spelling issues are more of a concern than his incorrect use of apostrophes :D

Edit: Matt, apologies if you're dyslexic.

The thread title 'Casino's in Leeds' could just be 'The casino is in Leeds' said in Yorkshire (ie, suggesting we have won the contest to host the first super casino already). Are you Yorkshire Rhinomatt ? and do you know something we and the other 26 competitors don't ?

If Blackpool doesn't get the super casino I'd be amazed.

I'm dissapointed that Wakefield want to place their application next to Xscape though, it's a horrible location, absolutely no atmosphere, just miles of car parks. The entire areas like the big box suburban shopping parks in the US.

It would be much better to build it where the ugly retail park is off Westgate in Wakefield City Centre. It would be placed in an established nightlife location, near the train station, and it would help to stretch the bars and clubs further down Westgate, instead of them slowly filtering into the shopping area. If not there it would be great built on the waterfront, it would help to transform the waterfront into a secondary nightlife area.

Why Wakefield want's to promote this auto orientated monstrosity of an area over its own city centre is beyond me.

Thing is though, Xscape is still developing and IMO is getting a good nightlife, especially inside the actual building. I think they could compliment each other.

Sorry, don't see how a super casino would be a good thing in central Leeds. Something smaller, i.e., the Clarence Dock proposal is fine, but I just think a super casino would be tacky, gaudy and totally out of character for Leeds.

Castleford is welcome to it IMO.

Living it large
While the supercasino will be in Manchester, Leeds has won the right to build a large casino development, as Yorkshire rival, Sheffield misses out altogether.
The team behind Leeds' successful bid to secure a licence for a new large casino has vowed to ensure that any new casino will play an instrumental role in the city's regeneration programme and that vulnerable people will be protected from the negative aspects of gambling.

Reacting to the announcement today (Tuesday 30 January 2007) from the Casino Advisory Panel, that Leeds has been recommended to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport as a location for a new large casino, Leader of Leeds City Council, Councillor Andrew Carter said:

"Despite reservations we felt that it was important we took the opportunity to compete with other major cities for a slice of the huge regeneration potential a new casino could bring to Leeds. There is no doubt the casino complex will generate jobs, however we do not underestimate the possible social impact and we must focus on making sure vulnerable people are protected from any downsides.

We live in a competitive situation where Leeds desperately needs regeneration funding and the Government has made it clear that a casino complex is an important vehicle for this regeneration.

Independent research shows that a new casino complex will generate over 700 full-time jobs, attract £21million of new investment and bring an extra one million people into the city each year. Our job now is to manage the process so that the new casino brings the widest possible benefits to local people and businesses in Leeds and the wider Yorkshire area. We are well aware that this project needs to be managed carefully to mitigate potential social impacts, and our focus now is on delivering the best possible project for the city."

However, no new casino complex will be springing up in Leeds overnight as the process of selecting a developer and operator and specifying a location will be a lengthy one. There are also separate licensing and planning processes to go through. Given that the build time for any project is likely to be two years, it is unlikely that the new large casino will open before 2009.

Well we already have a casino at Clarence Dock, so there wont be another there. I say put it in Criterion Place's hotel tower. Hilton plus high class casino could be the kick up the arse that the developers need to get Criterion moving.

I have to say that ideal locations in my opinion are:
CP building, Harewood and Eastgate quarter, Merrion Centre.
Or even:
The place where the YEP is now, the old factory over the road from radio aire.
However these too places are very near 2 casinos in Leeds already.

I know a lot of us here would probably hate it but wouldn't the most likely place probably be Elland Road with an Arena on the site as well. Whilst not being in the central location everyone wants and being generally critical of such developments I presume they could use the large casino as a cash cow for LUFC which lets face it really does need a few bob especially at the moment? I believe the plans are for about 1,500 sq metres casino with 150 slot machines and didn't some company buy some land near Elland Road for the purpose of a casino?
