All these pics are by Hawk, one of our members at Urban Ukraine. He's too lazy to post pics here, so I'm doing it for him. Hope it's not a problem ;)

Most of central Kyiv was builtup in the 19th century, some late 18th century, the Churches often go way back throughout the recorded 1500 history of the city, with reconstructions at different times. Today, some buildings are once again built in neoclassical style to resemble and fit in with the surroundings.

Many are reconstructions and renovations at the end time, taking an old building and adding some features while renovating it.

Just a new residential building

I cleaned the thread from the nonsenses but I won't ban anyone because if it takes two (and here it was a lot more than 2) to argue.

PS: I may ban someone, the moron who added Russian chauvinism as a tag.

Thank you for cleaning the thread.

Great pictures :)
I'm impressed with Kiev's look.. is that what the whole downtown's like?
More or less, but there are some ugly soviet buildings everyone completely out of place and also some from 1990's that are just as ugly but also kitschy/asian looking. For the past few years architecture has improved a lot, a lot of renovations and buildings built in the style of the surroundings as not to stand out.

Beautiful city, unique style!

Are there many hills in Kiev? And how is the city planned? :)

Yes, there are many hills in the city :) it was originally, according to a legend, built by 3 brothers and their sister on 3 hills. Kyi, Shek and Horiv (+ their sister Lybid). The city is named after the eldest Kyi, hence Kyiv. This was in 482 A.D. however archaeological excavations indicate that the city is actually centuries older than that.

You can see the hilly nature of the ancient city in this pic:

and here

(these are not new buildings, if anyone assumed it)

My street :) Notice the private balcony modifications, so disgusting... they ruin the facades, yet there are no laws prohibiting it

It's very good to see there's sand along the banks of the river. :)

It amazes me that the new buildings fits so well in the enviroment.

Can the "russian architecture" tag be removed?
