Changwon City, South Gyeongsang Province

Area: 293 sq. km
Population: 520,000

Most of the city is studded with mountains, and between the mountains are small basins where people live and work. The highest mountain is the Mt. Bulmo (802 m), which is situated in the southeastern part of the city. However, the northeastern part of the city is a large alluvial plain, which is one of the major food sources of South Gyeongsang Province.

This city was first developed by Geumgwan Gaya, one of the strongest power in the area until 4th century A.D. Although it has a long history, it didn't play an important role in the Korean history until 1970s. In the 1970s, the government started to build a large heavy-industry plants. In the year of 1978, Changwon Machinery Industrial Complex was completed. Since then, additional 7 industrial complex were constructed, which made Changwon one of the most important industrial cities in Korea.

Currently (2003), there are about 1,344 industrial companies in the city, which employ about 75,000 emplyees and produce machinery, automobiles, home appliances, chemicals, and steel. In agriculture, Changwon is a major producer of watermelon, persimmon, and peony.

Another things to remember is that Changwon is the capital of South Gyeongsang Province as it houses the provincial office.
