Channel 9 may farewell Bendigo St
Darren Devlyn and Nicole Lindsay

June 07, 2007 12:00am

CHANNEL 9's Richmond studios, a landmark of the TV industry, could soon be on the market.

The Bendigo St site, formerly a Heinz soup factory, has been home to Nine since 1956.

But a management restructure and looming sale of assets could see Nine relocating.

James Packer's selling down of his stake in Nine to just 25 per cent has given CVC Capital Partners control of the network.

Nine, part of PBL Media, and CVC, believes $100 million is needed to fund an urgent technology upgrade at the network.

"It would be our intention to fund that by selling the land at Willoughby (Nine's base in Sydney) and Richmond (GTV)," PBL Media chief executive Ian Law said.

"We are actively investigating location options for the Nine Network in both Sydney and Melbourne."

It's anticipated Nine will earn about $50 million if it sells the Richmond site. The Bendigo St lot has been home to some of the biggest names and shows in the history of TV.

Shows produced there include Graham Kennedy's IMT, The Don Lane Show, Hey, Hey It's Saturday, The Footy Show, Sale of the Century, Temptation, The Sullivans, The Paul Hogan Show and Stingers.

Some of the most memorable moments in TV have happened in the studios, including a dog lifting its leg on a camera during IMT and Kennedy's infamous crow-call, which sounded far too much like a swear word and resulted in the variety legend's exit from late night television.

The Nine switchboard also lit up the night Don Lane was offended by visiting sceptic James Randi, who verbally attacked Lane's friend, the psychic Doris Stokes.

Lane rose from the hosting chair in a huff and told Randi he could "p--- off ".

Less than memorable moments also occurred when Molly Meldrum was the subject of a deeply offensive Toasted and Roasted special.

Then there was Shane Crawford "dacking" Sam Newman on The Footy Show.

One of the biggest off-screen dramas at Nine occurred in 1991, when Tony Barber attempted to increase his $1 million a year salary as host of Sale of the Century.

Nine baulked at the demand and Barber was out of a job. He tried to explain his exit from the show by saying he'd become tired of living in the show's "velvet cage" and needed a new challenge.

Nine has several options with its Richmond studios, which occupies about 25,000sq m, or 2.5ha of prime land.

It could sell them outright and shift to a new site. It is rumoured Nine is interested in Docklands office space.

I think it was AUBoy who rumoured this originally on here. PBL's gaming division is setting up HQ here and expanding to Macau and Las Vegas - I dare say Nine will remain administratively-speaking a Sydney-based network, but they'd produce more content down here already, no (like most networks, Melbourne always produces a lot of national content - ABC & 7 easily - 10 & SBS might be the exception)?

Yeh sorry, by my comment I mean, they won't be moving the HQ to Melbourne, or maybe....

Should have phrased it differently! ;-)

Yeh, well basically, what would you say, 80% of there national content is produced in Melbourne anyway...?

They are like what Telstra do, they HQ in here, but you would think they are more Sydney based.

They say this is the most dramatic step by the Packer clan to drop back to only 25% ownership of 9...but didn't Kerry sell the lot to Alan Bond way back in the 80's for a heap..then buy it back for a pitance (relatively) later on??? maybe this has already been stated but I havent read every article in detail ? With the Docklands already hosting the film studios and 7.....it would help spice up the area I guess.....I feel history will go from Richmond though.

That's correct, made a lot of money out of it as well in the end.

Flicking through the digital harbour thread and found this quote from Tayser circa 2004.

Someone's on the money ;)

All it would take is the 9 Network [finally?] moving out of GTV9 in Richmond and setting up shop in digital harbour, staring Channel 7 down their noses across the street, with 9 logo to match, and you'd have a decent-sized media precinct down there with Film Vic. also set to move in.

Could go to Digital Harbour buit I doubt it. More likely I think to go either to Lend Lease (oh please god i hope so - put it next to cnr collins & burke and get a total times square thing happening), or get involved in a deal for the land and take up the entirety of New Quay II. That way they'd be across the road from central city studios. Just sounds logical to me.

Lend Lease's building I thought only had about 16,000sqm left...

MTV is based in Sydney.

But I have always imagined a glass box studio over the McDonalds and Y&J Hotel on the corner of Swanston and Flinders St.

The studio would overlook the intersection, and in the background you would see the station and Federation Square. Now that would be a hot location for MTV Australia, not a dark Sydney studio or some barg in Darling Harbour.

MTVs Aussie base if typically in Sydney. Personally, I think they're both brainless and they suit each other. And when I say Lend Lease, I mean the Victoria Harbour precinct. But my incling is that it would be MAB, just due to the proximety to CC Studios. Actually, come to think of it, Waterfront City could pull it off too ..... just depends of Channel 9 want waterfront or not.

I reckon they'll move to either Media House @ site 7 along with Fairfax (possibly why the formal announcement of that seems to have been postponed) or down at Central City Studios. I guess 664 Collins St could also be an option, with expressions of interest closing June 24.

^ how much space is available in fairfax and central city respectively?

do you think a PBL company would share a building with fairfax? I would have thought they'd want somewhere where they can have naming rights, if not sole occupancy?

what is 664 collins street???

Media House will have about 18,000sqm's, not sure about CCS. 664's the office development above platforms 13 & 14 @ Southern Cross.
