A few observations. The roads in Chennai are broad (due to the foresight of planners long ago), surface metal is smooth save a few areas dug up willy nilly. The city has also benefited from RWH (rain water harvesting), thereby increasing the green cover. A few drawbacks: sidewalks are mostly unusable, filthy and dangerous (electric transformers and such). They are steeply offset from the road making it rather difficult for someone to go up and down during each building entrance opening. The sidewalks also collect a fair amount of sand (yep the dreaded sand dunes) presenting a rather dirty unkempt street look.
Driving on the streets is still chaotic with no lane discipline. Street signs are sparse.
