SPEL Semiconductors Ltd is set to begin its next phase of expansion by the end of this month, senior sources in the company told Business Line.

This phase of expansion would cost $7.7 million (Rs 35 crore) and would raise SPEL's capacity for assembly and testing of semiconductor chips from 250 million to 400 million a year.

Only in November, the company completed its first round of expansion, which raised the capacity from 180 million chips to 250 million. The second phase will be in a Special Economic Zone. SPEL Semiconductors had announced in September a Rs 1,280-crore, five-year expansion programme, part of which would be in a SEZ.

regarding outer ring road

the idea of outer ring road is very good.it should be implemented as soon as possible.if govt. proposes airport near oragadam or sriperambandhur this ORR only make passengers to reach airport from different parts of city.
but taking 50 meters along this road is not a good idea.this will prevent commercial explotation along the road, and we cannot see large scale developement .And also this idea will make the public who own lands on proposed ORR restless and this will lead to delay in this road project.

I have the following suggestions, which our forumers may decide collectively.

We will start a separate thread - CHENNAI TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT or similar.

Let us have a few forumers (Voulanteers) who will act like moderators and remove the unnecessary / unwanted details.

First we will list all the crucial junctions and number / name them. Each relevant suggestion should be quoted with the reference no / name.

We may start with city first and then go to the suburbs, unless they are very crucial and needy.

We will submit the final approved reports at a seminar / conference to be arranged by SSC Forum at Chennai.

Great idea. We can start in earnest. One potential starting point is to look at an ideal road transportation network for Chennai. We could start with the expressway map I made some time ago on the one hand and drill down to a junction/road level analysis on the other.

Nissan not keen on new India plant

Nissan Motor is not considering a new independent car plant in India, according to some reports. The company's chief operating officer reportedly denied that such plans are now under consideration. There is no official response to these reports from Nissan so far.

Earlier this month, a leading Japanese financial daily had reported that Nissan Motor is planning a $500 million venture in India. The 2-lakh units per annum plant to manufacture an all-new 1,000 cc small car for the Indian market was to start commercial production in 2009, according to the report. The new plant was to focus on exports with only a third of the production meant for the domestic market.

There were also reports in Indian media about Nissan officials visiting various locations to assess their suitability for the plant. While Nissan reportedly considered multiple locations in the East and West coasts, Gujarat was speculated to be the frontrunner. The company was reportedly looking at a location with port facilities to support exports.

There were also reports quoting Essar Group officials that Nissan had approached the group to set up a car plant in the multi-product SEZ being built by Essar in Hazira, Gujarat. The Rs10,500 crore Essar SEZ is set to be one of the largest such projects on the west coast. Once again, there was no official word from Nissan about the claims made by Essar group.

If Nissan discards the idea of a new independent plant for itself, the company is very likely to join the Renault-Mahindra JV to build a new 5-lakh units per annum plant in India. While Nissan may source cars for the domestic market from this JV, the company already has a tie-up with Suzuki to source cars for the export market from Maruti's new plant. Renault holds a 44-percent stake in Nissan while Nissan in turn holds a 15-per cent stake in Renault. Carlos Ghosn, who is credited with turning around Nissan in the late nineties, heads both the companies.

ORR - Road Margins

the idea of outer ring road is very good.it should be implemented as soon as possible.if govt. proposes airport near oragadam or sriperambandhur this ORR only make passengers to reach airport from different parts of city.

I had a chance of discussing this margin issue with the officials. Their view is as follows. We may not agree with this but that is what they think.

The Local Govt and the NHAI are spending so much money and effort in developing the Ring Roads. When the Govt wants some areas for SEZ etc, theres is so much of objections. If they control the road margins, this may be used as an effective tool in their hand. Even if they have to expand the road width later, they may not encounter any acquisition problem. Another advantage will be to exploit the margin as commercial space later (when the price go up) to earn more money for the concerned departments

As Mr. Lakshmanan suggested, this will lead to lots of corruptions and ugly buildings (so called shopping complexes).

Has anybody found the reasons for the automobile manufacturers to shy away from chennai/TN? It is also observed that during the reign of the Jayalalita govt that the existing car manufacturers like the Ford, Hyundai and now the BMW have set up shops in TN.What is going wrong with the present Govt?
