Big Crane Erection to Block Central-City Traffic
Motorists are advised that a section of Victoria Street in Wellington’s CBD will be closed to all traffic – except for the morning and evening rush hours today (Friday, 12 October) - to allow the erection of a large construction crane.
Depending on the time it takes to erect the crane, the section of Victoria Street between Willeston and Mercer streets will be closed to through traffic from 8 o'clock tonight and potentially until 6.00am on Monday so the crane can be erected on the Chews Lane construction site.
The section of Victoria Street will reopen to two lanes of ‘rush hour' traffic between 7.00am and 9.00am and then 3.00pm and 8.00pm tomorrow.
Work to install the crane, one of the largest in New Zealand, started last weekend but was delayed by high winds and then postponed when electrical storms passed across the region.
Motorists travelling south through the CBD are advised to use the waterfront Quays, Taranaki Street or The Terrace.
Harris Street, between Victoria Street and Jervois Quay, will also be closed to through traffic.

Chews Lane project on track

A PROPERTY development that is set to change the face of a large chunk of downtown Wellington is going full steam ahead, according to the company co-ordinating the project.
In 2004, Wellington City Council chose Willis Bond Ltd to redevelop the Chews Lane precinct between Willis and Victoria streets. The council sold a 250-year lease of the site to Willis Bond for $12.5 million.
Willis Bond plans new retail outlets on Willis St, refurbishment of four heritage buildings, a new Willis St office building, a cafe and gallery area in the old Chews Lane and a 19-storey apartment building and parking building with space for 202 cars.
Willis Bond managing director Mark McGuinness said progress on the development was proceeding on schedule.
All but one of the retail tenancies had been leased to fashion brands such as Calvin Klein, Staxs and Farrys.
Land Transport New Zealand had leased 7300 square metres in a building under construction at 50 Victoria St and in two nearby heritage buildings.
An office building at 45-55 Willis St was almost fully leased.
However, spaces on levels four and five were being marketed by Sam McIlroy of Colliers International, who said: "45-55 Willis St is a quality address. The floor plates are of a good size. With car parking also available, this new high-quality building has to be considered for companies looking for small, high-quality space in 2008."
Seventy of the 95 units in the neighbouring apartment building had gone on the market and all had been sold. The remaining 25 -- including penthouse units --would be released next year and were expected to fetch prices of up to $2 million.
Discussions were under way with a number of food and drink retailers interested in opening outlets in the new Chews Lane.
Two Willis St retailers -- Veronika Maine and Kimberleys -- opened earlier this year while most of the remaining stores were expected to be finished before Christmas.
Mr McGuinness said the new Chews Lane with its cafes was set to open in time for the Sevens at Waitangi weekend, while Land Transport New Zealand would move into its new building in April.
The apartment building was scheduled to be finished in June 2009.
Mr McGuinness said substantial increases in prices of building materials such as concrete, steel and copper had been a problem. "But revenue has also increased substantially."
He would not say what the current price tag for the development was.
However, when completed it would have a value of $150 million.
