B8bn movie town for Chiang Mai

By: BangkokPost.com Published: 22/06/2009 at 03:19 PM

A major US-based entertainment company has confirmed plans for a huge new movie town in Chiang Mai province, with initial investment put at eight billion baht.

Creative Kingdom Inc, a creator of themed design architecture and destinations, said it will build a 175-acre mixed-use movie studio and residential development to be know as Chiang Mai-Wood (CNX-Wood).

Once completed, the sprawling complex would house the state-of-the-art CNX Movie World Studios -- a series of film production studios, animation facilities and special effects laboratories -- and include residential neighborhoods, public infrastructure and facilities, theme parks , restaurants and replicas of major tourist destinations around the world, the company press statement said.

Creative Kingdom chief executive officer Eduardo Robles said his company will make CNX-Wood the most advanced mixed-use destination in the world.

“The new CNX Movie World Studios will serve as the hub for Asia’s booming film industry and become one of the premier destinations for the world’s movie makers," he said.

The 175-acre mixed-use movie studio and residential development would take seven years to complete. It would be completed over five stages, beginning with the film studios.

Hollywood ambitions rising in Chiang Mai B8bn venture will build big movie town

Bangkokpost Published: 4/03/2009 at 12:00 AM

CHIANG MAI : CKA Chiang Mai Co Ltd, a subsidiary of the Los Angles-based entertainment firm Creative Kingdom Inc, plans to pour 8 billion baht into a movie town in Chiang Mai.

Construction will take seven years to complete on the 30-rai site in San Kamphaeng district.

By 2014, six studios of varying sizes will be available to serve different scales of movie production. In 2015, the company expects its production facilities will attract about 35 productions worldwide, said CEO Eduardo Robles.

The project will officially be announced on June 19 this year. Movie producers and directors from across the globe will be invited to attend to see the business potential. The company believes ''Lannawood'' will be able to surpass Hong Kong as the hub of the movie industry in Asia.

Mr Robles declined to reveal sources of funds for the project, but said the company was in talks with several foreign investors abroad. The company has received tax incentives from the Board of Investment (BoI) for the venture.

Chiang Mai was chosen because it offers a good location and traffic, and skilled people in the field. As well, the city is a geographical centre for services in the Mekong region.

Most importantly, production costs are about 20% lower than in rival locations.

Mr Robles urged the government to pay more attention to promoting the studio once it opens in order to attract a large number of movie producers.

He said CKA expected to create a number of economic spinoff benefits for Chiang Mai, so that it would not have to rely so heavily on tourism. He noted that hoteliers in the city were facing hardships because of the world economic crisis and slowing travel.

He said production crews would not only spend money at the studios, but needed to enjoy life after work. That means related business will spring up.

Creative Kingdom was founded in 1997 in Los Angeles by Thanu Boonyawatana, Roberto Caragay and Mr Robles.

It has emerged as one of the leaders in the architecture industry as designers and architects of prestigious land development projects worldwide, including the Arabian Resort at Madinat Jumeirah, concept design for The Palm and the World Island in Dubai, and Caesars Vandasea Resort in Singapore.

It first entered the entertainment business in South Africa in 2002, and has since developed a global entertainment business with numerous locations worldwide.

Currently, the firm has offices in Johannesburg, Manila, Dubai, Beijing, and Chiang Mai, employing 750 people in total.

The Chiang Mai operation was established in 2004 with registered capital of 50 million baht as a small architectural office but kept a low profile locally.

The firm has since expanded to other business areas, especially entertainment through its four affiliates with combined 50 million baht in registered capital. It is a leader in computer games and animation, in which it has seen a big business opportunity.

Magic Panda & The Cool Kidz

“How it would be if Chiang Mai has CNX Movie World”

“How it would be if Chiang Mai has CNX Movie World”

Khun Narong Kongprasert, president of the Chiang Mai Chamber of Commerce

“Nowadays we can see that movies extremely influence people as we can see that Korea considerably supports their movie industry till there’re worldwide admiring trends about Korea stars, merchandise, food and culture. Movie studios are parts of tourist attractions where people will have a chance to wear stars clothing which stimulates tourism well.
Therefore the CNX Movie World project of CKA Chiang Mai will surely give confidence and perfectly promote investment atmosphere in Chiang Mai and will also encourage employment. Especially at CKA which as far as I know there are more than 200 employees. Considering to tourism if there are a shooting it’s definitely that there’ll be movie set and many stars who come to Chiang Mai. It will greatly promote businesses in Chiang Mai to be better. Furthermore CKA has outstanding achievements and it’s also a member of Chiangmai Chamber of Commerce so this will make Chiang Mai be more famous. I’d like to thank executives of this company who take an interest to invest and do business in Chiang Mai. I’m surely with you”

Professor Uthit Atimana, Lecturer Media Arts and Design Chiangmai University

“I think it’s tally with state policy that wants Chiang Mai to be an Outsourcings city in art and cultural and informational technology. That’s because Chiang Mai is central of Thailand’s northern part that is modern but still has fortitude of traditional art and cultural (Lanna culture). It’s also a city of education that has many universities both public and private. Therefore Chiang Mai is a city of new generations that include people from provincial and foreigners. It’s a central city of business and handicraft merchandise manufacturing of Thailand and also famous as contemporary art and cultural which go together with Lana culture. We have many thinkers, creatives, artists, designers, etc. Asking if Chiang Mai is readiness in substructure and is it proper or not ? My answer is yes it is because our city isn’t too big or too small. We have readiness in logistic freight and transportations both by land and air due to Chiang Mai was laid in national policy to be Hub in economy to connect with closer countries. Moreover we have quality hotels from cheap price to 7 stars. I think it wouldn’t impact to Chiang Mai culture because we can handle well on modernity and there are conservatives

Khun Peerapong Duangrat, head of Sipa's animation and multimedia project

“In my opinion I think it would be good. I believe in the ability of the place: location, traffic, hotels and atmosphere that help for doing art work. I believe that Ching Mai people have skill in ability progress, there are backing. In the sense of economy it’s anyway good. If people come to Chiang Mai economy will be much better. Moreover new generation will see that there’re labor markets which support them so everything will be better especially on employment. I understand that CKA will create CNX Movie World to be like Hollywood then there will be studios companies who come to rent and use location. I believe that if there’s a policy which supports projects to be like special zone for investment and let local implicate in, the province will get income. People also get the chance to develop their skill. At first they might work for hire and end up by doing on their own. I think that Chiang Mai people have good skill to work with foreigners they might have to improve some ability. There are many parts in movie industry some parts take time as learning to use English language. Other skills are available for many Thai people I think. As for tourism lots of people will surely come to visit the CNX Movie World.
I like CNX Movie World to originate and I believe that CKA has enough ability to do this project. As usual when Hollywood shoots film that involve with Asia countries they frequently shoot in Thailand because it’s convenient. As SIPA is an office so we attempt to support. At present SIPA see that Chiangmai is an Outsourcings Center which means it’s an Outsource of Thailand both in Software and Digital Content which are likely to be each other project supporter.”

Khun Nichapoom Chaianant (WayuFilm) New generation Indy films director

“If this project happens in Chiang Mai I think Chiang Mai will have more kick and fun. I get goose bumps when hearing that Chiang Mai will have CNX Movie World like Hollywood in USA or Bollywood in India. Anyway I’m worrying that having CNX Movie World would have an affect on Chiang Mai people in some fields or not ? If there is employment in Chiang Mai’s people professions I think it’s wonderful like hiring Indy movie makers and people from big movie productions from Chiang Mai. That would be very nice. On the other hand if hiring just people from Bangkok or foreign countries without a hand in from Chiang Mai people in this project I think benefit might not extend thoroughly. Then it might be disappointed. Even though at least it makes Chiang Mai’s people dream become true. Many people from other provinces and foreigners will surely come to visit Chiang Mai then. In respect of the project I also hope that we would get a chance to work with them. It would be great if Indy movie makers and productions will be a part of CNX Movie World.”

The moving images flickering across the Silver Screen are a gateway to the imagination, a way to escape… to dream, to travel to foreign lands and distant times. This exciting area of CNX Movie World is filled with attractions taking their inspiration from different film genres. Every experience will take guests on a different dining, shopping or thrill ride adventure to places they could only dream of.

Western/Cowboys Themed District

The Old West comes alive in an area entirely themed like a lawless, western town in the 1800’s. Visitors will feel like they are transported back in time as they imagine what it would have been like in the American West when the country was still young and untamed. Gunfights break out on the streets and from the balconies; heroes chase the bad guys through the streets on horseback and dancing girls perform for patrons in the local saloon.

Japanese Themed Amusement Center

Multi-storied pagodas rising up from the sparkling lagoon below are home to this state-of-the-art theme park featuring the latest in thrilling rides and hi-tech arcade games.

Bar Street

After months at sea living the exciting life of a pirate, there is no better place to relax than in a local bar and eating establishment at an exotic port-o-call. The street in this particular seaside village is lined with a wide variety of bars to tempt even the most seasoned seafarer.

Spanish Port Royale

A location like no other, this Spanish-style port is the perfect place for pirates to begin their plundering adventures. In fact, a large ship featuring the Jolly Roger flag high on its mast sits docked in port. Here, visitors can dine on exotic foods and share a drink with their shipmates at many a world-class tavern. And the spoils of the treasure hunt abound in the fabulous retail outlets that line the Lagoon.

Spanish Themed Bar Street

As evening falls, this Spanish seaport comes alive with a variety bars and restaurants where visitors can sit along the promenade or on the balconies to enjoy a refreshing drink or a delicious meal and dream of the adventures that lie ahead.

Hong Kong Restaurant

The ancient seaport of Hong Kong comes to life in this wonderfully themed restaurant. High arched ceilings are illuminated with hanging brass lamps that seem to flicker with delicate flames bathing guests in the warm glow of the evening. Large, curved windows open onto the Lagoon outside allowing diners to imagine what adventure they might be embarking on from this Southeast Asia location.

Shopping Street

Even those in the midst of an adventure can always find some time for shopping among the unique boutiques along this stone-covered avenue. This European-style street setting will also be the perfect place to grab a quick espresso or a light meal at one of the many inviting eateries.

Lagoon and Boardwalk

A wooden boardwalk, lined with an abundance of delectable restaurants and distinctive shops, surrounds the tranquil waters of the Lagoon. Tables with umbrellas and canopied patios create the perfect locations for a quick lunch or a delightful dinner with family and friends and even the most hard to please shopper will find endless opportunities to find just the right purchase to make their day complete.

A simple walk along the boardwalk will take visitors from one part of the world to another. First are the pointed thatched roofs of a Polynesian village nestled amongst the swaying palm trees. All along the way, trendy little shops and enchanting restaurants take their place under these distinctive structures offering a wide choice of activities, tastes and purchases.

Nearby, an expansive, stone-encrusted courtyard spreads out in front of an enormous Chinese palace perched high atop a tree-lined hill. The courtyard comes alive throughout the day with Chinese acrobats, dragon dancers and food vendors. Visitors will be tempted by the aroma of tantalizing Chinese food and a diverse collection of Chinese handicrafts and goods for sale in themed venues inside the palace walls.

Each of these exotic areas features easy access to the beautiful sandy beach that encircles the lagoon. Themed cabanas can be rented by the day to provide the perfect location for your beach party. And the wide promenade will provide the ideal viewing area as the Lagoon comes alive each night with a fireworks and special effects show, a visual delight for audiences of all ages.

Commercial Restaurants

There are restaurants known around the world and they all come together in this district that features some of the best-known chain restaurants from different countries. There will be fast-food restaurants for a quick meal or sit-down diners for a more family-style dinner, enough variety to satisfy even the most demanding appetites.

Studio Main Entrance

Giant elephant statues, the unmistakable trademark of Thailand, stand perched above the entrance to the CNX-Wood Pictures’ Backlot, heralding your arrival at this world-class film studio and tour.
