Chiang Mai Light Rail Transit System | Thailand

Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand




Thailand’s Transport and Traffic Policy Plan Office recently finalized the official details of Chiang Mai Mass Transit System project by using the light rail transit system. There are 2 possible options for Chiang Mai mass transit system project currently considered including, Plan A - the underground line for main lines with partly street level lines, and Plan B – street level for whole main lines. The project is currently in final preparation processes, scheduled to approve by Ministry of Transportation by this September.

Chiang Mai Light Rail Transit System

There are 3 main lines for Chiang Mai Light Rail Transit System including Red Line 15.65 km, Blue Line 11.14 km and Green Line 13.81 km.

1. Red Line (Airport – Chiang Mai University – International Convention Centre)
This line starts from Chiang Mai International Airport – Chiang Mai University (Suan Dok) – Wattanothai Payap School - Chang Phueak Bus Terminal - Chiang Mai Rajabhat University - 700th Anniversary Stadium – Chiang Mai International Convention Centre – Nakornping Hospital.

2. Blue Line (Chiang Mai Zoo - Tha Phae Gate - Don Chan)
This line starts from Chiang Mai Zoo – Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna - Chiang Mai University - Nimmanhaemin Road – Wat Phrasingh Temple - Yupparaj Wittayalai School - Tha Phae Gate - Night Bazaar - Anusarn Market - San Pa Koi Market - Chiang Mai Railway Station - Big C Don Chan - Promenada Resort Mall.

3. Green Line (Mae Jo - Kad Luang - Airport)
This line starts from Chiang Mai International Airport - Far Eastern University - Nong Hoi Market - Montfort College - Regina Coeli College - Anusarn Market – Night Bazaar - Kad Luang - Prince Royal's College - Dara Academy (Dara Witthayalai School) - McCormick Hospital - Arcade Bus Terminal - Central Festival – Mae Jo Intersection – Ruamchok Intersection.

Creating Chiang Mai LRT networks - red green blue


Type A with Underground LRT


Type B with ONLY at grade LRT

1. Red line LRT - 11.87 km (Chiang Mai Government Complex - Chiang Mai International Airport - Mae Hia) - starting at Mae Hia Saman Samaggi (AKA Big C Hang Dong), Dept of Land Transport, Chiang Mai International Airport (interchange with green line), Central Airport, Chiang Mai University (Suan Dok Gate campus), Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital (interchange with blue line), Watthanothai Phayap high school - Chiang Mai Ram Hospital - Chiang Phueak gate intercity bus terminal, Rajphat University of Chiang Mai, 700th Anniversary Chiang Mai Stadium, Chang Phueak polie station, Chiang Mai International Convention center, Nakhon Phing hospital, - Chiang Mai Government Complex


2. Blue line - 11.92 km (Don Jan - Tha Phae gate - Chiang Mai Zoo) - Chiang Mai Zoo, Rajamangkla Technology University - Lanna campus, Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai Univesity convention hall, Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital (Interchange with red line), Nimmarnhemin road, Wat Phra Sing, Chiang Mai district office, the 3 king statue (the old Chiang Mai provincial Hall Museum), Yuppharaj collage, Tha Phae gate, Chiang Mai Nigh Bazaar, Anusarn market (interchange with green line), San Pa Khoi market, Chiang Mai Railway station, Big C Don Jan, Promenade Mall

3. Green line - 11.11 km (Mae Joh - Kad Luang Market - Chiang Mai International Airport) - Chiang Mai International Airport - Far Eastern University - Central Airport - Nong Hoy market - Montfort College - Sacred Heart College [Chiang Mai] - REGINA COELI COLLEGE - Anusarn market (interchange with blue line)- Chiang Mai Nigh Bazaar - Chiang Mai city municipal - Waroros Market (AKA Kard Luang) - Prince Royal Collage - Dara Collage - McCormick Hospital Chiangmai - Star avenue mall - Arcade intercity bus terminal - Central Festival - Mae Jo Intersection - Ruam Choke intersection (Choke Plaza)

I think underground is going to be an expensive option.
"Cut and fill" will disrupt roadbeds for years, but tunneling under will be more expensive.
Maybe tunneling under Hauykaew road (1004) would be too disruptive.

I really hope they go with the underground option in central Chiang Mai given the congestion there. Any reason why the western end of the proposed blue line doesn't run along Huaykaew Road?

Maybe tunneling under Hauykaew road (1004) would be too disruptive.
A big dilemma - the at grade version cost about 28,419 Million Baht and the section with underground section cost about 106,895 Million Baht. You should never forget that Chiang Mai is 720 years old (found at 12 April 1296) so any underground section require delicate handling.
