Big new plans for Chicago’s old main post office
By DAVID ROEDER
Chicago Sun-Times, April 10, 2013

Bill Davies, the secretive British investor who wants to redevelop the old Chicago Main Post Office, is making a new bid for credibility with revised plans for the massive building that straddles Congress Parkway.

His latest proposal, which got its first airing at a community meeting Tuesday night, calls for making the federally landmarked building a mostly residential and parking complex and the centerpiece for surrounding hotel rooms, stores and offices.

Davies has hired Chicago architect Joseph Antunovich of Antunovich Associates to craft the plans for a first phase of 5.2 million square feet, more than what’s in Willis Tower. It would include a 1,000-foot-tall building east of the post office, and a later phase envisions a tower that would top Willis in height...

A little render i made. The antennas are there, just not visible from this angle.

wow those are nice looking. do you think you could make a render that encompasses this tower and part/all of chicago's current skyline?
I like the way you changed the name of the thread.
Hope this goes ahead.
WOW nice! Such evil design so vertical :D

Alright people, the whole complex is here, and thiner 2000 footer..Don't forget that this is NOT final design..Those are just placeholders..If you look closely you can see that those smaller towers are actually smaller copies of the main tower, only without the antennas..I'm wondering what will be the final design IF this goes ahead..

It's huge. it reminds me of that gouvernment complex in some small US city...forgot the name :bash:...but it also looks very vertical and very nice.

Great work on the model :)
wow very nice render. those smaller towers look like they could be around the ~800-900ft range maybe? this is a cool project. just wish the base wasnt so bulky.

About 1000 footers..As far as I noticed..But as I sad, there will be a lot of redesigning because those things are only placeholders..

dino, what do you think the odds of this being built are? like a 1/x ratio. id personally say 1/50. i think the odds are slim, but im hoping for the best.

Empire Plaza in Albany, NY?

Well, I'm not familiar with development in Chicago, but I have to agree that all those articles have point and evidences of what they sayin'..I believe that something will be built, but the question is what, when and how big..At the end, this is just a huge optimistic vision for now, and a lot of changes will be made before this get U/C..I stay optimistic and hope that things will go well..We'll see..I'd give it 10% of chances to get built with some main changes..But I'd rather wait to see the design and some detail about contractor and investor..

Yep that one. I've always found it very futuristic dispite its age.
i just noticed, this thing sort of looks like the old verticus proposal and, to a lesser degree, the old miapolis proposal for miami. anyone else notice a similarity?
I like how it fits into the skyline but still stands out. I hope it happens!

Oh my! If this one have any chance to look anything close to this it will be a hell of an awesome tower. It's great that US finally gets some project of the worlds top league. And I also think this one will fit the Chicago skyline much better than Chicago Spire would. Lets hope this project is serious and will go forward

Btw, great renders Sir ;)

I do hope that this goes to become more then a proposal. But why this location, on the edge of town (and right next to Willis too). In my humble opinion, this building (and by extension, any of those other 2000 footers) would look better in the middle of the city, to have a more powerful effect.

Putting these 2000 footers on the edge of the city kind of "shifts" the focus of the skyline to whichever direction the building is, and makes for a weird lopsided effect.

Just my two cents.
^^ Agree. Good thing is that they at least plan to build those "small" towers to balance the skyline a bit. But still if this thing build with the proposed location there should be build more towers south from the Old Post Tower in the future making a nice transition to the lowrises. That would take some time and surely change the city completely moving the center to the south.

Hey thanks! You mean place it in a photo? I don't know if i'm capable of that. I'm not experienced with composition.

I reuploaded the images (1, 2), tinypic recompressed them terribly which i didn't see because i had cached versions in my browser.
