I'm leaving today...

I don't think any other city is connected to its state moreso than Los Angeles is to California. LA truly is the face of the Golden State.
I agree...

Well, I tried to do this honestly, and I typed the city that popped in my head first when I thought of the state. Sorry to be disingenuous to a lot of the smaller states, but I couldn't remember their capitals quite like I used to in high school. :(

For the most part it seems to be capitals or largest cities, depending on whether the largest city is sufficiently larger than the capital to be important.

The only exception I can think of is Kansas City, which kept popping up for Kansas, even though Topeka is the capital, and Kansas City is centered in Missouri--and is the largest city in Missouri for that matter.

start spreading the news
no they just say new york city
So the town isn't so good they named it twice? The twice-naming wasn't so good they named a casino in Vegas for it?

And yes, I know people will think NYC if I simply say "New York." That wasn't the question though. Who actually doesn't know where Orlando, Houston or Atlanta are? You must come across more idiots than I do in my daily life.
I think San Francisco may have something to say about this...
Nope, it's Los Angeles. San Francisco may be famous but it hardly typifies the California lifestyle.

Connecticut really doesn't have a city that represents it well.

Hartford is far from the major population centers in the southwest part of the state which are centered to New York rather than Hartford.

I think New Jersey has the same problem.

Providence and Boston however do a good job for RI and MA, and there's the obvious example for New York City.

When people think of California, they think of Southern California...specifically Los Angeles, not San Francisco.
