Various other schemes, plus that above for Erection of 10 no. 1 and 2 bedroom flats (Class C3) over 8 floors at Land At Hanover Square, Newcastle have been previously covered on this thread on posts #108, 109, 141, 594, 694 - 699, 700, 703, 705 (above) & 706

On walk across west footpath of High Level Bridge on Saturday 21/12/19 approx 1330 spotted through the mist for first time an excavator on land west of the bridge

After taking pictures on the Roomzzz aparthotel project ventured around the rear of the nearby building below and at approx 1340 took some pictures of the area where excavator is located

It is on a small area of land just to the west of the Tuthill Stairs up from Close, now with fence around it, with sign for Taemar Ltd, builders, on the plywood section

Views of the site through small apertures in plywood

Views from the steps

How the area looked on , pictures from Steve Ellwood post #594 on 10/08/17, see https://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=141696909&postcount=594 and earlier post #141

2 of Steve's pictures from that post

Images hosted on http://ellwood.fototime.com/Hanover%...nover Street

From the Design & Access Statement within the Planning Documents of the planning application

EXTRACT

The site is bounded to the north and west by a three storey Victorian red brick building, formerly a warehouse, to the east by the scheduled monument of Tuthill Stairs, and to the south by the sloping bank and footpaths before the residential development of Quayside Lofts on the Close below

The site access is from Hanover Square (formerly Stephenson Place) to the north and immediately to the east of the narrow site entrance are steps to the sub-station adjacent to Tuthill Stairs.

The site falls steeply at it’s perimeter on the east and south of the site by approximately 3.5m.

AND

The site area is 384m2.

Part 2 of 2

Took a wander around the immediate area to see if there were any other viewpoints to see the site area - there are to the west as can be seen in these pictures by myself 21/12/19 approx 1345

Yellow crane is associated with Melia Innside Hotel development down bt the riverside

Normally I would suggest the setting up of a separate thread to cover progress on the scheme but because of the lack of viewpoints think leaving it here on the "City Centre - RESIDENTIAL Developments" thread may be best course of action as due to its location think it may not be any easy scheme to follow with progress pictures - will see in time

Chronicle Live website article from 24/12/19 picking up on the cladding replacement needed at Cale Cross House, Newcastle

EXTRACT

Block next to Tyne Bridge must have Grenfell-like cladding removed before being turned into flats

Plans have been lodged to replace the aluminium cladding on the outside of Cale Cross House, with developers saying it does not comply with post-Grenfell fire safety rules

A statement from England Lyle Good town planners on behalf of the developer states: "The changes to the present cladding system are required in light of our client's intention to convert the building to residential apartments in line with the current prior approval consent, specifically due to changes to Building Regulations post-Grenfell; we understand that the present system would not be compliant with the relevant regulations from a fire safety perspective for residential accommodation."

It adds that the existing cladding will be "removed and replaced with similar external Rockpanel cladding in terms of finish, which will replicate the vertical emphasis and grey appearance of the existing cladding system".

The Sailors Bethel, Horatio Street, Newcastle, change to residential accommodation - Planning Application

Seamans Bethel, near the mouth of the Ouseburn. A nice and unusual little building.

Listed II and this information from http://lbonline.english-heritage.org.uk/BuildingDetailsForm.aspx?id=304635&search=y

This view taken on 30 October 2010:

The Bethel built for £2,000 as a non conformist Chapel in 1875 and replaced a earlier Chapel in Manor Chare. It opened on 12th April 1877 and a Sunday School was added to the back of the building in 1900.

The building was used for a short period at the end of World War 2 as a Danish Church but this closed down in 1949.

Used as a store for many years and restored in 1991 as office accommodation for the then Tyne & Wear Development Corporation.

Of course Sailors Bethel is often taken to mean something completely
different (if you know what I mean), however the dictionary shows Bethel
as meaning:

Etymology: Hebrew bEth'El house of God
Date: circa 1617
1 : a hallowed spot
2 a : a chapel for Nonconformists b : a place of worship for seamen

The Bethel was painted by TS Lowry in 1965 as The Old Chapel, Newcastle upon Tyne- see http://www.culture24.org.uk/art/painting+&+drawing/art17532

Be a great place to live.. might be tempted.

My head tells me that this is a way of keeping a building alive, my heart... not so sure, not sure why but this feels a bit wrong.

I suppose at least it's not a bar....
