I'm creating this thread to discuss some light-heart but interesting issue.

Many cities have nicknames, some cities have really famous nicknames.

Sometimes, though, outsiders will use a city nickname that just don't fly with locals. I'm not referring to derogatory / provoking / negative nicknames, but those use by people who are pretending their coolness by showing they are knowledgeable about some city they like.

Here in Europe, there is a prime example.

Barcelona, Spain, has a certain hipster image. It also has a fairly long name. Here and there one will read/listen someone calling that city as Barça, as in "I'm planning to take a holiday out there in Barça". But Barçe is not used by locals in any meaningful number as a reference to the city, but only to the local soccer club. Instead, sometimes Barna is used.

If I'm correct, people in San Francisco, USA, don't refer to the city itself as "Frisco". It is almost a gaffe depending on your demographics and it will "denounce" you immediately as a visitor/tourist/wannabe if you keep insisting using them among locals.

Do you know of similar instances?

As well as 'the Big Smoke' or 'the Smoke' (mentioned above), that no one in London would ever use, people from outside London sometimes talk about going up 'to town'. They could be in Winchester or Guildford, but the 'town' they're referring to is London. It's very old fashioned and, to me anyway, sounds very pretentious.
