Which weekend in August would you prefer?

Hi everyone

Comdot, Mulattokid, gothicform, Mukkjoy and myself have been discussing the possibility of another tour/meet up, and were wondering if anybody was interested. Since the Docklands were covered last time, we were planning a walk around the City this time.

It would take place some time in August - which gives plenty of notice - and you can vote in the poll above for the exact weekend you'd prefer. Although there won't be much tower construction to see (and certainly no towers to visit), we've been thinking of other possible "high places", and came up with the idea of having drinks in Vertigo 42.

For those who don't know, this is a rather swish bar at the top of Tower 42. It's pretty expensive though (drinks cost about £10-15 each), and we'd also have to dress quite smartly to get in. But I personally think it would be worth it, as the views from up there are quite simply out of this world. As well as seeing the capital from 600 ft up, you'd be able to look down on the Pinnacle, Heron and Leadenhall sites from directly above.

Alternatively, there's the London Eye. A private capsule can be hired for £425... but if enough people turned up, we could split the cost fairly easily (e.g. 25 people = £17 each). Bear in mind though - although the views are nice, they don't last very long, as the wheel only takes 30 minutes to turn round.

Personally I would much rather go up Vertigo 42 - but I've mentioned the London Eye as an option, if the majority of people would prefer that.

The tour itself would begin at Guys/Southwark Towers, then cross London Bridge, head north to St Helens and the Gherkin, north again to Middlesex Street (where there's a 100m tower u/c) and the Heron site, then back down towards the Stock Exchange and Tower 42. It depends how far people want to walk, though. For example, we could visit Broadgate/Crown Place, or the area around Drapers/Moorgate/London Wall, or the various developments along Cannon Street.

I was thinking of putting together a guide (with a map showing the various sites, and a path we could follow) which could be downloaded as a PDF and then printed off before the tour.

Anyway... I and the others planning this tour would welcome your feedback and suggestions. Once we've agreed on the date, we can make a separate thread where people can vote on either Vertigo 42 or the London Eye.

Cheers

Will

super stuff, will.

a couple of things to add that us four discussed:

1) we all need to make a decision on the date by monday 23rd june (3 weeks from now). this has the benefit of cheaper rail/ plane tickets for people like me and other obvious benefits. also deadlines are good things with groups! :)

2) if people can put down when they can't make it. this stops the poll going against people who already have commitments.

===

am sorry to be the awkward one but i can't make the first weekend. unfortunately last night i had to book a flight somewhere for 3rd august. :eek:hno:
any of the other two saturdays and sundays is fine for me.

I am free any of the above. The preference is the last one as its just before my birthday and you can all buy me lots of drinkies!

Thanks to my colleagues for arragning allthis :drunk:

I agree with Nick that the poll and definate attendances should be stated by 23rd of June.
I will try and arrange for special rates at T42 if that is evryones choice

BTW: Shouldnt this thread be in the Construction forum? The last one was, and we are all going ot see U?C or demolition.

Can we make it after 2pm this time? ... I nearly died of starvation last time. :)
Will, you should move this thread to the construction forum...a lot of regular forumers dont bother very much with the metro area

this sounds like a good idea :) I have voted for the earliest date but at the moment haver no plans so any is good. Like the idea of Vertigo 42 as Ive never been up there. Maybe they would reserve an area especially for us up there if we have a big enough turn out :) Brick Lane for a Curry afterwoods would be good, I can arrange a deal on the food if once again there is say at least 8 of us :)

Awesome, 5 minutes walk from Chez Smoggie! We could meet at my local, The Woolpack on Bermondsey Street!

Beware if you are planning on booking for Vertigo 42, in my experience of SSC London meet ups about half the number of people who say that they are coming actually turn up. :eek:hno:

^^ Yes but i'd like to think that some of us have proved ourselves reliable :D

I'm not going to use my vote just yet, have to check a couple of things first, but count me in most definitely. Oh, and i'd love to go up Tower 42, but I shall be bringing a hip-flask... ;)

sounds excellent!
also your amazing curry place after!?

secondly many ssc users are students who cannot afford to go to wanky overpriced drinking places like tower 42
:? i'm an extremely tight student who thinks it's worth it :) you can get a glass for <£7 if you share a bottle.
i'll probably just get one drink though. if staff don't like that i can always wander off after downing my overpriced single glass of rosé and take other paupers to a cheap boozer, that's if any rich forumers want to live it up in v42 for longer than one glass. then we can all meet again at curry house #1!

whatever, we have months. also we need to think how is booking v42 actually gonna work, as smoggs points out. :eek:hno:

The Woolpack rules! :D

I've been told about another curry place in Whitechapel slightly nearer the City, equally good value and some people even consider it to be better than the Lahore Kebab House

Or we could go to one of the Vietnamese places on Kingsland Road, I've been to a couple of good uns.

Your attend record has been exemplary sir. :eek:kay: I would like to think that it's due to the fantastic company that you get to keep at SSC meet ups but more likely it's the lure of beers!

Thought I'd bring a bottle of White Lightening along ;)

Can honestly say, Having been to Vertigo on a couple of Press nights, it really is worth every penny, the views are out of this world, havent been in a while so might just join you, You got to try the Pimms Royale if they still do them. Amazing.
