Kovai airport to get international status

http://www.deccanchronicle.com/chennai/kovai-airport-get-international-status-713

Feb. 4: Coimbatore airport, that holds a Customs airport status currently, will soon get an international status with new extended runways, bigger terminal, better ambiance and mechanized ground handling. The process of acquiring 590 acres on the other side of the current runway is in progress and the status is expected in the next two years.
VP Agrawal, chairman of Airport Authority of India told reporters that Coimbatore has a rich potential in the all three verticals — passenger, cargo and international traffic —- and the airport has seen a constant growth of 10 per cent year on year.
The existing terminal that has a capacity of 300 passengers will be upgraded to accommodate 750 before the World Tamil Conference. In order to reduce the runaway occupancy time for the aircraft landing and take off, a new taxiway has been constructed and three aircraft crash fire tenders at a cost of Rs 3.35 crore each have been deployed at the Kovai airport.
After the liberalization of government policy and entry of several low cost airlines, the sector has witnessed a consistent growth of 30 per cent despite the three per cent slump during the recession last year. Major work is in progress in about 35 airports across the country and while Trichy and Vizag have been inaugurated, 50 per cent of work have been completed in Calicut, Mangalore, Mysore, Tiruvananthapuram and Madurai. Work will shortly begin in Rajamudiri, Cuddapah and Vijayawada, he added.
The implementation of the Space Augmentation System in Bengaluru to reduce the congestion of communication between the pilots and the air traffic controller, has taken us to the fourth position in the world, Mr Agrawal noted.
Thirty-five airports, next to Ahemedabad and Jaipur, will go for ISO certification and another 20 more potentials airport will be identified, he said.

looks huge, but am surprisd by the height. Not very high for a two story level airport. This means the ground floor will have low ceilings ?

Renovated airport to receive Tamil conference delegates

The terminal building at the Coimbatore airport is being expanded and the newly constructed area will be used exclusively for domestic and international arrivals. It is expected to be ready for receiving delegates for the World Classical Tamil Conference.

D. Devaraj, Regional Executive Director, Airports Authority of India (AAI), Southern Region, has told The Hindu that after the expansion, the building area will go up from 6,000 sq m to 14,000 sq m. The enhanced terminal building area will be able to handle up to 700 passengers in both arrival and departure sections.

The work began in January last year and AAI has so far spent Rs.78 crore.

A new parallel taxi track, laid at a cost of Rs.31 crore; four state-of-the-art fire tenders; extension of runway; new fire station and a workshop are some of the other facilities added to the airport.

The new parallel taxi track was commissioned recently, Mr. Devaraj said.

Originally there was no air-condition facility at the Coimbatore airport. However, the expanded area will be totally air-conditioned. Facilities such as escalators and lifts will be added to it.

AAI will also provide two aerobridges at the Coimbatore airport. It is planning to dismantle aerobridges at the old Bangalore airport and re-install them in Coimbatore.

The AAI has asked the State government to allocate 613 acres for the new terminal building.

The existing area of the airport is only 603 acres. If the State government allocates the land, facilities, including a new apron, will be constructed. The new building will be able to handle a total of 1,200 passengers in both arrival and departure sections. AAI has finalised the plan.

Work on three new parking bays and increasing the car parking facility are some of the other development works taking place at the airport. At present the airport sees 42 aircraft movements per day and handles 3050 passengers, Mr. Devaraj adds.

Airport building to be opened on Monday

Coimbatore: The newly-constructed Coimbatore Airport terminal building with state-of-the-art modern facilities will be opened on Monday noon. Airports Authority of India (AAI) Regional Executive Director D. Devaraj and Coimbatore Airport Director M.R. Vasudeva told The Hindu that the existing terminal building could handle 150 “arrival” passengers and 150 “departure” passengers.

Both Mr. Devaraj and Mr. Vasudeva said a building parallel to the existing one was constructed to cater to the increasing number of passengers.

The new building can at a time accommodate 350 passengers arriving at the airport and 350 departing from there. The new building will have all modern facilities - four lifts, four escalators and two aerobridges. Work on the aerobridges is expected to be over in six months.

With the expansion, the area of the building has been increased from 5,962 sq. m to 14,673 sq. m having separate domestic and international arrival halls. The new arrival hall has been constructed with three conveyor belts with a loop length of 60 m each as against the two with 13.5 m length functioning in the old building. There is space for a VIP room, customs office, duty free shop, banks etc. Presently, domestic and international passengers are handled through common security hold.

Soon, the existing departure lounge of the terminal building will be enlarged and modified. The AAI with the help of the state highways department has developed a four-lane approach road and two additional service roads.

Re- CBE airport

I wish the designers used some brain when the made the design. The people who come in to receive the passengers have to stay in scorching sun or rain or wind just outside the airport. Pathetic is an understatement. If they had asked money from the people of coimbatore for construction, they would have gladly contributed. After all, we are self made people. Any and all the development in coimbatore was done by individual contribution up until some meager money thrown in for this semmozhi conference.

Disappointed... CBE deserves a better airport.... Honestly.
Until state govt acquires 200 acres of land this disappointment will continue. Terminal without shelter in front is really very bad planning. I hope that they will plan for it. The airport work will continue for another 3-4 months, so we have to see the final output. Also it looks like the old terminal will also matched with the new terminal.

^^ Then please tell me about the render in first page!! Is that a fake post?
Its looks like AAI conducted a competition for new CBE airport terminal along with various other airport terminals. Lot of arch companies participated in it and they submitted their design. This is one of the design presented by a company (RMJM archi) and they published in their website.

This design or whatever designed approved may be planned for the big bang expansion (new ternminal) not for current terrminal expansion.
