EMC Corp to fund research at IISc, Amrita varsity

Coimbatore, Dec. 29:

EMC Corporation has extended its global corporate research programme, the EMC Innovation Network, to India.

As part of the programme, EMC's India Centre of Excellence would fund the research efforts here through university collaboration to discover and explore technologies shaping the information infrastructure of the future, explains an EMC source.

This extension of the programme places India as the fifth node of EMC's worldwide innovation network. The innovation network has existing initiatives in the US, China, Ireland, Russia, Israel, Egypt and Brazil.

EMC has collaborated with Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (IISc) and Amrita University in Coimbatore. These two institutions have been identified based on their commitment to research, quality of technical talent at faculty and student levels and their expertise in information infrastructure technologies.

With IISc, EMC would work on analysing unstructured data concerned with the discovery of patterns and trends in large data sets; and with Amrita University on information security.

Mr Niranjan Thirumale, Chief Technology Officer, EMC India CoE said that the Corporation proposed to extend its research collaboration in India considerably, and establish strong engagements with Indian technical institutes that offer subject matter expertise and deep technical know-how on information infrastructure technologies.

“Universities offer unparalleled environment for breakthroughs in research. They play a key role for technology companies committed to innovation.

"Our research efforts will help drive innovations to the market more quickly and help EMC remain strategically vibrant,” he said.

Nice thread.

Do we need a 'Coimbatore' in every thread title? This is the Coimbatore sub forum, I guess we can do away with the city name.

Summary in English:

This article is about a Professor Dr.Kanagaraj who runs civil services exam coaching center named "Latchiyam" for free at Gandhipuram. His ambition was to become a collector. As it turns out he couldn't become one and now he is helping wannabee civil service officers. So far about 25 of them passed out under his guidance.

Education needs soul: Nobel Laureate

Anything resembling moral principles or suggestions of greater values has been isolated from the curriculum, if not removed entirely, Nobel Laureate Richard R. Ernst, Member of the U.S. National Academy of Science, said here on Saturday, referring to how even top institutions had failed in not including the moral element.

Delivering the commemorative talk on ‘Academic Opportunities for Shaping a Beneficial Global Future' at PSG College of Technology, held in connection with the institution's Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the Nobel prize winner in Chemistry said excellence alone was not good enough. Education needed to have a soul.

“Education does not change people immediately. It takes a long time. Ethics has to form an important part of education. Foresight, fairness and responsibility should be the three pillars of academia,” Mr. Ernst said.

Terming research as another tool of education, he urged researchers to operate on two levels–basic research level, and the societal and global level.

He impressed upon the audience that technology was not everything. It also had negative effects. Some of them were environmental damage, global warming, wars, corruption, greed and selfishness, crime, and poverty.

“Teachers should realise that students rarely need to be delivered lectures. They can read on their own. They should be taught to learn by doing. The most efficient way of education is to stimulate the curiosity of students and learning will follow by itself,” Mr. Ernst said.

Stressing the importance of role models, he said emulating them was a learning process in itself. He urged scientists to work in a way that concern for women formed the basis for all technical endeavours. This could enable the country move from a glorious past to an even better future.

Referring to the concept of Barefoot College in Tilonia in Rajasthan, which believed in finding solutions to rural problems from within the community, Mr. Ernst said such models were required to be emulated throughout the country.

He believed that the formation of responsible and innovative leaders with long-term vision to serve society should be the principle objective of universities.

L. Gopalakrishnan, Managing Trustee, PSG & Sons' Charities, and R. Rudramoorthy, Principal of the college, also spoke.

A scientist in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has received the prestigious Fulbright-Nehru Fellowship for the year 2011-12 from US-India Educational Foundation. Under the fellowship programme, Dr Chandrababu, Department of Plant Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics, will work for eight months on "translational genomics for drought resistance improvement in crop plants" in Cornell University, one of the Ivy League institutes in USA, a TNAU release said today. The cross country collaboration will identify breeding targets for drought adaptation in rice and wheat, two major food crops of global importance, it said.

Scientists asked to come out with high-yielding rice varieties

http://www.thehindu.com/news/states/tamil-nadu/article2791034.ece

Agriculture Minister S. Damodaran has asked agriculture scientists researching on rice to come out with high-yielding varieties.

Addressing the scientific community at the Centenary Celebration of Paddy Breeding Station and ‘Inauguration of International Symposium on 100 years of Rice Science and Looking Beyond' at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, on Tuesday, he said there was an urgent need to do so.

“The area under cultivation is shrinking. At the same time the population is growing. Given the circumstances, the only way the Government can meet the food needs of the people is by promoting high-yielding varieties.”

For the Government to promote such varieties, it was dependent on the scientific community, he said and urged it to come out with more varieties, just as it had done so in the past.

Mr. Damodaran said the State Government headed by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had initiated a few other measures like the second green revolution to boost production.

He cited the prize the CM had announced for paddy farmers adopting system of rice intensification scheme to underscore his point.

Vice-Chancellor P. Murugesa Boopathi said that the country's per hectare paddy yield stood at 2.25 tonnes. This was lower compared to the world average, which was 3.18 tonnes. Tamil Nadu, however, fared better at 3.1 tonnes.

The Paddy Breeding Station was the first research station in the country dedicated to rice research.

The Indian Government established it in 1912. R. Parnell was the first scientist appointed as the Government Economic Botanist at the Station.

And, K. Ramaiah was the first Indian paddy specialist at the Station.

The dedicated work by the two persons made Coimbatore the national centre for rice germplasm.

They also released the first official rice variety – GEB 24 in 1921. The variety was an excellent fine grain variety, which was still remembered by farmers with the local name, ‘Kitchili Samba'.

Agricultural Production Commissioner Sandeep Saxena said that Tamil Nadu Government aimed to improve production through the second green revolution. It also aimed at increasing farmers' income.

Special Secretary, Department of Agriculture and Co-operatives, Government of India, V. Venkatachalam said the scientific community and farmers had to face new challenges like climate change and water shortage while attempting to improve production.

Tamil Nadu bets on Pulse Wonder to increase production

Chennai : In an attempt to increase pulse production, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa Tuesday ordered the usage of Pulse Wonder, a crop booster with nutrients.

In a statement issued here, the government said Rs.212.50 crore has been allotted towards subsidy for farmers using Pulse Wonder, developed by the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) in Coimbatore, around 500 km from here.

According to the government, in the first phase of the programme Pulse Wonder is to be used in 50,000 hectares spread over 1,695 villages.

Tamil Nadu has around 600,000 hectares under pulse cultivation, but the production is just 200,000 tonnes as farmers do not use any fertiliser to increase the yield.

According to the government, the usage of Pulse Wonder increases the yield by 20 percent.

Speaking to IANS, a TNAU official on the condition of anonymity said: "After multi-location trials in several places in Tamil Nadu, Pulse Wonder was ready for wider usage in 2010."

He said a patent has been filed for the booster nutrient and it is pending.

"Pulse Wonder reduces flower shedding, increases drought tolerance of the plant while increasing the yield by 20 percent," he said.

He said for a one-acre crop, two kg of Pulse Wonder should be sprayed mixed with 200 litres of water.

Currently the booster nutrient is manufactured by TNAU and last year the university supplied around 38 tonnes to the government.

"As per the government's announcement, around 250 tonnes of Pulse Wonder would be needed for spraying 50,000 hectares of crop. Since the crops are grown at different places at different times, production can be managed," the TNAU official said.

Some food for thought to fight exam stress

COIMBATORE: With the growing tension and stress associated with exams, Avinashilingam University is working on creating a diet specifically for students preparing for exams. Researchers hope that the diet will relieve tension and enhance memory power.

According to Rohini Tiwari, who supervises the research at the all-women university, field trials have given them desired results. "It will take a while longer to officially launch the diet chart. The trials conducted among school students have started providing wonderful results. There is considerable improvement in the academic performance and stress management among students,'' she said.

"Class X students of a private school were chosen for the study. There were four divisions in class ten at the school. We told students of one division to follow our chart. We also gave them some training on food intake during exam preparations. Their performance was compared with students of another division who were not exposed to this programme. The results were wonderful," says Rohini.

"Serotonin is a neurotransmitter concealed in the brain and it normally helps reduce stress. Its proper functioning will help reduce anxiety and stress, improving mood and ensuring good sleep," says Rohini. "Serotonin is produced by L-Tryptophan, an essential amino acid. To produce Tryptophan in students preparing for exams, a few diets have been suggested. I gave a list of foods, asking students to select five from it every day. The list included cereals and grains, leafy vegetables, roots and tubers and even fruits,'' she said.

"The students who followed the prescribed diet exhibited considerable improvement when compared to students of the placebo group," said Rohini. This does not mean that diet management alone will help, warns C Yegammai who guided the study conducted by Rohini. "We also gave them training on stress and anger management and taught them the importance of a good night's sleep," she said.
