Sankara Eye Hospital will open its 10th branch at Jaipur next month.According to Dr..R.V. Ramani, Founder and Managing Trustee, Sankara Eye Foundation said, the hospital constructed at a cost of Rs. 50 crores will have 250 beds. “In this 200 will be for people from economically weaker section of the society and the remaining 25 for others,” he said.“The paramedical staff for the hospital have been selected.

Most of them are from economically poor background from rural Rajasthan About 40 girls who have completed their Grade 12 were selected through a written exam. During the training period they were given a stipend. After the successful completion of the training, they were given certificates and they will start working in the hospital,” he added. All Sankara hospitals work in 80:20 model, where 80 per cent of the patients are from economically weaker side and from rural areas (who receive completely free treatment) and 20 per cent from affluent classes who could afford the treatment.

“Every day 500 free eye surgeries are being performed by doctors in our hospital across the country. Out of this 250 are performed in Coimbatore alone. Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India- Business Wire India-- November 28, 2017

KEF Infra, leaders of innovative, integrated offsite manufacturing and prefabrication in India, and Kovai Medical Center and Hospital Ltd. (KMCH), Tamil Nadu's most trusted multi-speciality hospital, today announced their partnership, while breaking ground on the new college Hospital building in Kalapatti, Coimbatore.

The facility, which is designed by Coimbatore based Sankar and Associates, is KEF Infra's latest hospital project that will be prefabricated at its integrated factory in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu and then shipped to Coimbatore and assembled at site. Spread across close to 650,500 sq.Ft. The multi-speciality facility is being developed with an investment of over 200 crores in a record-breaking 15 months. The partners are also working together to build a hostel for students which will be around 350,500 sq.Ft. Taking the entire project size to an area of 1 million sq.Ft.

The 700 - bed facility will have centres of excellence in healthcare and features including individual intensive care suites, consulting rooms, operating theatres and emergency units - treatment bays, setting global benchmarks in healthcare experience.

Founded by Mr. Faizal E. Kottikollon in 2014 as a subsidiary of KEF Holdings, KEF Infra, headquartered in Bangalore is at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution 4.0, in the field of construction and infrastructure. The company uses integrated offsite manufacturing technology, automation and robotics to manufacture hospitals, homes, hotels, commercial buildings and schools at 50% lesser time than traditional construction. The new-age company will manufacture the hospital at its' 42 acres, site first-of-its-kind fully-integrated assembly-line, factory KEF Infra One located at Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu, and will complete the structure of the global standard medical facility within 9 months. The rest of the hospital including the bathroom pods, modular MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing), rooms, façade and finishes will also be prefabricated at the firm's state of the art industrial park.

Dr. Nalla G Palaniswami, Chairman, KMCH shared "We are delighted to partner with KEF Infra for our new teaching hospital. This is our first facility to be built using offsite manufacturing and modular technology. We have witnessed many hospitals being constructed efficiently in the west using this expertise, and are glad that today we have a company bringing this technology to India. We are happy to be pioneering partners with KEF Infra and are excited about working together to showcase this new, innovative and efficient way of building hospitals. KEF and KMCH have shared values, we both believe in bringing in the best technology to improve the lives of people in India. Our partnership will ensure that we not only treat people with the best expertise but also build our hospitals with the best technology."

KMCH has a legacy of over 25 years of delivering the best of care to patients in the areas of Heart Care, Cancer Treatment, Neuro care, Orthopedics, Critical Care and Trauma amongst others. Committed to delivering modern care with world-class techniques KMCH remains dedicated to medical research and education through their renowned fellowships and DNB programs. This medical college is another step in their mission to improve community health and well-being by providing world-class patient care, education and training.

India today faces a substantial divide between demand and supply of quality healthcare facilities. The fundamental reason behind this gap is the high costs and time involved in building and upgrading healthcare infrastructure. The best way to deliver international standard healthcare, for superior patient experience and treatment is to employ patient-centric design and supplement it with offsite building technology to ensure a fast and reliable solution. This model is the only practical way to meet the healthcare needs of India's fast-growing population.

Mr. FaizalKottikollon, Founder and Chairman, KEF Infra shared "We are very excited to work with KMCH as the hospital management is truly forward-thinking in their approach. Their willingness to adopt new technology is remarkable and we need more such thought -leaders to transform India's healthcare sector. Today, India has only 1.3 hospital beds per 1,000 people, which is significantly lower than the 3.5 beds defined by the World Health Organization. To address this, we have pioneered a fast and reliable solution termed "catalogue approach". We offer a catalogue of modular designs, complying with standards set by the Joint Commission International - an international healthcare accreditation service. Our catalogue hospitals range from small 15-bed to 500-bed facilities, with the number of pre-designed modules changing based on the facilities requirements. We are determined to revolutionize the healthcare infrastructure sector by providing innovative solutions to transform human lives and the world around us."

KEF's 'assemble rather than build' solution is bringing about a paradigm shift in healthcare infrastructure development. They made their foray into the healthcare infrastructure sector with MEITRA Hospital - a 400,000 sq.Ft., 500 bed (Phase 1, 209 completed) super specialty tertiary hospital built in 18 months in Calicut, Kerala. They have created a model that successfully bridges the gap between architecture, engineering and technology, while reducing considerable environmental impact, redefining the future of healthcare facilities through this hospital.

India's healthcare sector is on the cusp of rapid growth, rising income level, greater health awareness and improved access to insurance are the key contributors. Offsite manufacturing and modular construction in healthcare will be a significant catalyst to the sector's success. It will be the cornerstone on which India builds its position as a leading player in the global healthcare market. PSGIMSR performs complicated double lung transplant surgery

In a first, the PSG Institute of Medical Science and Research (PSGIMSR) has become the first teaching medical hospital to have carried out a successful double lung transplant in India.

While, double lung transplant had earlier been done in non-teaching medical centres in Chennai, the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Centre in PSGIMSR becomes the only teaching institute to have achieved it, according to the hospital doctors.

Briefing the media at the hospital here today, Dr. R.M.P.L. Ramanathan, Medical Director of Lung Transplantation, said the surgery was done to a 30-year-old man - Ravi Tursiani from Mumbai.

“He was referred to the centre after having suffered Pulmonary Fibrosis (Fibrotic Interstitial Lung Disease) for seven years. The disease, which is incurable, was severe and had damaged both his lungs severely,” Dr. Ramanathan said. He further added that lung transplant was the only option available for the team and the surgery was done after harvesting a pair of lungs from a brain dead patient from PSGIMSR.

“The lungs seemed a perfect fit as the deceased had a near equal stature of Mr. Tursiani. We also gave him necessary rehabilitation before going into the surgery and successfully carried out the surgery in close to 12 hours in the middle of October,” the doctor added.

Dr. Jnanesh Thacker, Surgical Director of Heart and Lung Transplantation, said that Mr Tursiani, would not have survived if the transplant was delayed any further.

“He was unable to move from his chair when he came in for treatment. For a transplant he needed to be a little healthier and the rehab we gave him proved very useful in helping him withstand the surgery,” he added.

Post surgery, Mr Tursiani, who was on ventilator and oxygen support for almost seven years, is able breathe without complications. He is also able to walk around his room and would be under observation for three months.

Mr. Tursiani, later interacted with media through video conferencing.

“There are chances that he might get some infection,” the doctors added. The doctors further added that lung transplant could be very helpful for many patients in India. However, lack of proper awareness and expertise has been the deterrent.

PSG Hospitals awarded with Pharmacie de Qualite Certification

PSG Hospitals awarded with Pharmacie de Qualite Certification^^^^

Coimbatore, Dec. 20

The PSG Hospitals, a teaching affiliate of PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (PSGIMS&R), has been awarded with the ‘Pharmacie De Qualite', certification that recognises hospitals for the best practices and excellence in pharmacy operations with platinum grading.

PSG Hospitals is the 35th institution in the country to be certified with the award that recognises hospital pharmacy management, contribution towards improving effectiveness of health-care system and public health, maintaining and improving professional performance and providing effective medication therapy management.

According to V. Ravindran, Manager of the Department of Pharmacy, the inspection was done in two phases, one as a preliminary inspection in September and another primary inspection in October. Various certification requirements including medical management, drug distribution and control, administrative control and responsible procurement, competency and management were assessed during the inspection.

While the Department of Pharmacy in the hospital has been able to cater to most of the standard requirements necessary to get the certificate, they were lagging behind in efficiently recalling of low quality medicine, pointed out Dr. S. Ramalingam, Dean of PSGIMS&R,

“When staff identify a defect in a particular drug, they will immediately inform the pharmacy unit that would block the entire package. The drug will then be sent to the manufacturing company and the patient would be repaid. Though we follow the necessary procedure, the inspectors felt that it was not up to the mark,” said Dr. Ramalingam assuring that they would improve on it.

Three new facilities opened at CMCH

Three new facilities opened at CMCH
^^^^^^

Coimbatore: Health minister C Vijaya Baskar on Saturday inaugurated the much-awaited catheterisation laboratory (cath lab) and two other new facilities at CMCH.
The other facilities opened at the hospital include the auditory-verbal therapy unit and the cosmetic surgery unit. The minister also handed over five new dialysis machines to the government hospital.

“One of the long pending demands of the people has been fulfilled. Now, patients needn’t any longer visit hospitals in Chennai to undergo open heart surgery,” said the municipal administration minister, SP Velumani, after the inaugural function.

Pointing out that the state government had upgraded the hospital at the cost of Rs 90 crore a few years ago, Velumani said, “With the newly-inaugurated facilities, the hospital today excels the private corporate hospitals in terms of technological edge.” With the additional five dialysis machines, he said, the hospital can now handle 45 dialysis cases a day. The hospital earlier had 10 dialysis machines.

Vijaya Baskar, meanwhile, said the cath lab would help the hospital perform cardiothoracic surgery. “The Coimbatore government multi-speciality hospital will in future take up organ transplant surgeries, including the heart transplantation,” he said.

The health minister also inaugurated primary health centres at Narasipuram, Pollachi, Kunniyamuthur and Kinathukedavu on Saturday. Within two weeks’ time, the government is expected to inaugurate a primary health centre at Kavundampalayam. tnn

MCH to get MRI machine that may scan whole physique in lower than a minute

CMCH to get MRI machine that may scan whole physique in lower than a minute^^^^^^

Coimbatore: Health minister C Vijaya Baskar on Saturday said the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) would get a high-end magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan machine worth Rs 8 crore this financial year.
Pointing out that no government hospital in the country has such a high-end MRI machine, the minister said it would be of great help during mass causality.

Speaking to the media at CMCH, Vijaya Baskar said the MRI machine would match international standards and be on par with those in the developed countries.

Unlike the existing machine that takes about 20 minutes to scan one from head to toe, the new machine would take only less than a minute to scan the entire human body, the minister said. The machine, he added, would be handed over to the CMCH this financial year itself. “A formal announcement in this regard would be made shortly,” he said.

He also unveiled the government’s plan to set up another catheterisation laboratory (cath lab) at CMCH at a cost of Rs 8 crore. “The Tamil Nadu Medical Service Corporation has identified the place and discussions are on with the concerned officials to establish the lab,” the health minister said.

Responding to the requests made by the municipal administration minister S P Velumani, Vijaya Baskar said computed tomography colonography (CTC) scan machines would be handed over to the government hospital in Mettupalayam and Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) hospital within this financial year.

Asked about the status of setting up the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the state, the health minister said the state government has identified about five places and submitted reports to the Centre through district collectors. It’s now upon the Centre to implement the project,” he said.

Government hospital to get poison treatment centre

Government hospital to get poison treatment centre
^^^^

Coimbatore: At a time when there has been an increase in percentage of medical emergencies due to poisoning, the state government has decided to establish a poison treatment centre at the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) at the earliest.

Poisoning, including reptile bites and consuming pesticides, is considered as one of the major reasons for increase in mortality rate after trauma, cardiac arrest and stroke, according to sources in CMCH. About five persons seeking medical emergencies due to poisoning are admitted in the hospital every day.
A poison treatment centre will established at five medical college and hospitals in Coimbatore, Madurai, Thanjavur, Vellore and Tiruvannamalai, said a source from the health department.

A sum of Rs 245 lakh has been estimated to establish a centre with facilities like ventilators, haemodialysis machine, temporary pace makers, multi-para monitors, antidote bank and a basic toxicology lab.
“The ward would have at least 20 beds,” the source said.

“The centre is already established at the Madras Medical College (MMC) six months back. We would speed up the establishment work across the state after studying the success rate at the centre,” said Edwin Joe, Director of Medical Education (DME). The death rate due to poisoning has come down by 40%, as per the centre’s report.

We are planning to conduct a review process shortly, he said. Preliminary works at the Madurai medical college and hospital was almost done and it would be opened within a month.

“We have directed the rest of the hospitals to identify area to establish the centre within three weeks,” he said adding that they would commence the work at the earliest.

Apart from consuming poisons, the number of patients treated for snake bites is high in the district. Over 900 patients were treated in 2017 for snake bites. Of them, 600 were men. Wasp sting, bee sting and injuries due to human-animal conflicts were minimal in the district.

New cath lab at CMCH a boon for cardiac patients

New cath lab at CMCH a boon for cardiac patients^^^^

Coimbatore: With over 250 angiograms in a month, the newly-opened single-plane catheterization laboratory at the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) has been seeing a good response.

Inaugurated by the state health minister C Vijaya Baskar on March 31, the facility was set up in order to diagnose and check the coronary and cardiac conditions at the government hospital.

Earlier, the patients were recommended either to government hospitals in Chennai or private hospitals, a senior hospital authority said, adding that the cost of diagnosis and intervention is depended on the requirement of the lab’s usage.

Attributing the increase in cardiac-related diseases to the change in life style, a doctor specialized in cardiology said that next to trauma, cardiac disease was the main reason for increase in mortality rate. With the facility, there is no need for the patients to undergo operation.

“We treat at least five to ten patients with cardiac diseases per day. The disease is quite prevalent even among the young ones,” the doctor said. However, he said most of the patients, who had taken angiograms and angioplasty, were adults.

Till date, the hospital has conducted a total of 93 angiograms and 60 percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) – an invasive procedure to open up blocked coronary arteries, the official said, adding that they had conducted a maximum of 12 cases per day.

As the treatment costs about Rs 15,000, most of the patients were put on waiting list for a few days as the inauguration date neared. The official said that they have been witnessing patients coming from Ottanchitaram, Ooty and Tirupur.

While the state government has managed to inaugurate the single-plane cath lab at the cost of five crores, they are yet to install a bi-plane cath lab, at the cost of six crores, which would be used for diagnosis and intervention of neuro-related diseases.

“Installation works are going on and within a month it will be completed and installed,” the official added.

CMCH may get 2 dialysis machines for diabetics

CMCH may get 2 dialysis machines for diabetics
^^^^

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Medical College Hospital is considering setting up a couple of dialysis machines in the diabetes ward. This will ensure that patients who suffer from renal failure due to diabetes do not have to stand in a queue with hepatitis and other kidney failure patients.

The hospital performs dialysis for around 40 patients a day.
CMCH officials are considering creating a small enclosure within the diabetes ward for diabetes patients suffering from kidney failure to undergo dialysis immediately.

The hospital has 13 dialysis machines now, of which two of them are exclusively for hepatitis C and hepatitis B patients in a separate ward. “We avoid doing dialysis for other renal failure patients from the machines for the hepatitis patients, to prevent spread of infections and disease. Though we sterilise all our equipment, we choose to avoid such risks,” said CMCH resident medical officer Dr A Soundaravel.

The government hospital gets at least 300 diabetes patients in the outpatient ward daily.“By setting up a few machines in their ward, it is easier to treat them and ensure they get dialysis as soon as possible,” Soundaravel added.
