^^

Friends,

Please list out if any more big projects are either in pipeline or construction, so that I can update the first post regularly and all the news regarding IT/BPO/Software from Coimbatore can be posted in this dedicated thread so that the main Coimbatore thread can be kept for other project updates.

good idea Arul, it would be even better if you benckmark a thread for Construction Projects Update, not just IT projects for Kovai. The present Kovai thread is full of so many information it is hard to get a cler picture of the construction projects and building photos.

Good Thread :)

Can we change heading as " கோவை- தகவல் தொழில் நுட்பம் " in tamil instread of "கோவை -IT" ?

Arul, Can you start another thread as "ELCOT promoted IT Parks -Tier II cities (Madurai, Trichy, Salem, Thirunelveli & Hosur)".

Already construction activities started in Madurai & Trichy..

Very big projects will have separate threads in coming days. After seeing the ground breaking progress surely we will get lot of updates. Rakindoo Kovai pudur project is another mega one in CBE, we will start the thread once we get enough pictures on construction.

Cognizant keen to develop its Coimbatore facility

IT services major Cognizant is well on course to make Coimbatore a key constituent in its success story. It is on a major recruiting drive from engineering colleges in and around the city and has already filled up half the seats in its newly opened techno-campus inside a private IT-SEZ here.

Described as one of the largest CTS facilities in a tier-II city, the techno-campus built at a cost of Rs 180 crore has seven floors with a capacity to employ 6000 professionals.

The company also has plans to expand the facility and the second phase is expected to add 6500 seats. "We are aggressively increasing our strength at the new facility. In the last few months, we have added hundreds of people and at present, we have 3500 employees ," Cognizant VP and centre head, Coimbatore Vishnu Potty told ET.

"It is a big facility and one of the fastest growing delivery centres in the country. So we want to hire people as quickly as possible," he said, adding the training academy with 20 class rooms inside the new campus is buzzing with activity now.

On the reported delay in sending call letters to last year’s campus placed students, Mr Potty said all of them would come on board by March 2010. CTS has started its next round of campus recruitments and so far around 1900 students have been picked up from selected engineering colleges in and around the city. It is said colleges in this region contribute to 10% of the company’s annual campus hiring.

"We have selected students mainly from Amrita College of Engineering (550), PSG College of Technology (400), Kumaraguru College of Technology
(300), Bannari Amman Institute of Technology (150) and Kongu Engineering College (150),
" he said.

Further, he said, the company is selecting students from all engineering streams and not restricting to the core
circuit branches like computing, electronic, electrical and instrumentation.

"We were looking for diversified profiles and recruited people from offbeat verticals like polymer technology, leather technology and textile engineering," he said. He added, such candidates will understand life sciences better and can be very helpful in developing software related to those fields.

The region has around 118 engineering colleges affiliated to Anna University, Coimbatore. On the employability of students, GRD College director KK Ramachandran told ET that there is a huge chunk of students available here, but nearly 50% of them lack communication and language skills.

On campus placements, he said they have turned slightly better from December 2009. "Until November, there was no recovery signs from industry, but now, it is vibrant and picking up. We get lot of enquiries from MNCs like JP Morgan Chase and C H Robinson. Visits by IT companies like TCS and HCL are also in the pipeline," he said.

‘Medical Transcription Outsourcing Capital !'

Mods - I am not sure if this has been posted; if yes, then you can remove this.

http://coimbatorelive.blogspot.com/

There is more to Coimbatore than just being the ‘Manchester of South India' with its burgeoning textile and engineering industries. This third largest city in Tamil Nadu and home to the Formula 3 circuit has, over the years, emerged as one of the top destinations for the IT-BPO industry.

In fact, according to a recent study by Cyber Media's Global Services and investment advisory firm Tholons, Coimbatore has been ranked in the 17th position in the list of the top 50 Emerging Global Outsourcing cities. Industry associations have been making concerted efforts to turn this industrial hub into another Silicon Valley. The Coimbatore zone of the CII has been, for nearly a decade now, promoting this industrial hub as an ‘ideal IT destination' for engineering process outsourcing (EPO), among others. The region has carved a niche for itself in engineering, auto components and machine tools space.

Industry experts say the locational advantage that the city enjoys, its proximity to Chennai and Bangalore, the huge talent pool and its entrepreneurial culture differentiates Coimbatore from other destinations. A number of companies across the gamut of outsourcing (from EPO to legal and medical transcription) have started their operations to capitalise on the rich pool of talent and resources readily available here.

Statistics reveal that there are over 27 engineering colleges, 70+ arts and science colleges and 18 polytechnics in and around here, making it an ideal recruitment destination as well. Retention of talent pool has been a strong point for most of the players establishing a presence here.

IT major Cognizant, for instance, was one of the first major players to start a development centre here and has since expanded rapidly. Its Vice-President and Head, Vishnu Potty, admits to Coimbatore being a strong sourcing base for its operations across India. Cognizant's Coimbatore centre focuses on financial services, healthcare, manufacturing and retail, media and entertainment. The city is set to emerge as the ‘Medical Transcription Outsourcing Capital of India', say leaders in the medical transcription space.

Players such as CBay Systems and Spheris have expanded their operations here rapidly. CBay, for instance, has its largest facility here in an area of about 20,000 sq.ft. The company has, in the last eight months, opened up two centres, initiated tie-ups with local colleges to rope in students. A few others are exploring opportunities across the landscape as this (medical transcription) industry is predominantly South-based.

Being the chosen hub for MT, the city also has a number of people travelling from smaller towns such as Salem, Erode, Pollachi and Udhagamandalam attracted towards this steadily growing industry.

“The availability of quality manpower, large talent pool of almost 28,000 non-graduate engineers passing out every year from the 260-odd institutions has made Coimbatore an attractive destination for us,” says Suresh Nair, CEO and Managing Director, Spheris.

Industry leaders believe that with requisite training, the prospective candidates could be groomed to become world class medical transcriptionists to cater to the $200-billion healthcare outsourcing business world-wide.
