Coimbatore college students develop satellite for ISRO

Coimbatore, Jan 27: Students of Sri Shakti Institute of Engineering and Technology, here, have designed and developed a satellite at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore. It would be inaugurated by chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Dr R Sivan on January 28.
The formation of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre in June last by Prime Minister Narendra Modi inspired 12 students of the institute to collaborate with ISRO and develop 'SriShaktiSat', the institute chairman Dr Thangavel told reporters here on Wednesday.
After installing Sri Shakti Sat Ground Station in collaboration with Serbia-based Community for Space Programme Development, the institute became a member of the Satellite Networked Open Ground Station (SATNOGS) project, he said. Thangavel said SATNOGS aimed at providing technologies for a distributed network of low earth orbit satellite ground stations. Srishaktisat would be weighing only 460 grams but can perform like any other nano satellites weighting upto 10 kgs, he said. The satellite would be used as a technology demonstrator for Internet of Things in space and for inter-satellite communication, he said. After the virtual inauguration, the satellite would be handed over to ISRO in February for its use, he added.

Bounce electric scooter N3310 production begins, to be priced under INR 50k
1047433

Last year, Bengaluru-based smart mobility startup Bounce decided to enter the electric scooter market with its very own offering, the Bounce N3310. As per Vivekananda Hallekere, that was after completing 25 million rides in under 18 months in Bengaluru. To bring down fuel bills and emissions, the company earlier tied-up with Ather and Ampere and already has electric scooters in its fleet.
Now, production of the Bounce N3310 has began. Bounce is manufacturing the new electric scooter at a site in Coimbatore. Hallekere has tweeted that the Bounce electric scooter will have swappable batteries, although it’s not that we didn’t know that already.
In September last year, Bounce received homologation certification for the N3310 from the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT). This certificate is necessary for an organization to start producing self-assembled EVs and petrol vehicles, making Bounce one of the few ride-sharing startups to acquire one.
Bounce was founded with a vision of revamping the urban commuting sector in metro cities by bringing in scooter-sharing services. The largest chunk of its fleet is based in Bengaluru with a total of 22,000 two-wheelers in the city. The second-largest fleet is based in Hyderabad, with a total number of 5,000 two-wheelers in the city.
In December last year, Bounce said that it plans to add 4,000 more electric scooters to its fleet by the end of this month and make the fleet completely electric-powered by the end of 2022, newindianexpress.com reported.
Even though the country was in a lockdown due to COVID-19, Bounce kept busy with the development of its first in-house electric scooter codenamed the N3310. According to Bounce’s official website, the self-assembled electric scooter will be available on a subscription basis and on a long-term rental plan as well. In contrast, crosstown rival Yulu Bikes has tied up with Bajaj Auto to develop low-cost last-mile electric mobility scooters.
The specs cited at the official Bounce website point towards a real world range of 60 km on a single charge and a dedicated battery-swapping network. If an electric scooter is low on battery and a customer is in need of one, the battery swapping network inside the city is there to support. This battery-swapping network was previously introduced by Revolt (as explained here by a Revolt electric bike user), which opened up the electric motorcycle segment.

I really wished electric mobility to be the sunrise sector for coimbatore to move into next league. Unfortunately, Hosur has taken a lead due to multiple reasons - proximity to Blr, land availability etc.
Unless Land banks are created in cbe/ cbe-salem corridor - we cant expect big industries/investments - have to more rely on MSMEs and existing cos expansions

Corpn, police work to end begging in public places
Feb 8, 2021, 04.51 AM IST
Coimbatore: People seeking alms and trying to force you buy small items at traffic signal points, places of worship, bus stands and railway stations might become a thing of the past in the near future, with the city corporation and police planning to conduct rescue operations regularly to prevent such menace in the city.
City health officer S Raja said the civic body would conduct joint operations with the anti-human trafficking wing of police department to rescue homeless and abandoned people, who were found in the city limits.

“We will open night shelters at Puliyakulam and Valakaimandi in a week with a combined capacity to accommodate 80 people. After that, we will commence the rescue operations,” he said. Presently, the city corporation runs four night shelters – two at RS Puram and one each at KNG Pudur and Kempatty Colony – with more than 200 inmates.

An official with the anti-human trafficking wing said the drive would be launched after consulting the district collector and doctors of the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH).

Meanwhile, based on the city corporation’s request, the anti-human trafficking wing had rescued 20 people, four of them women, from Town Hall, government arts college road and near CMCH on Saturday. They have been put up at the night shelter at RS Puram.

“Earlier this week, we had rescued two children - one selling books on the road and another working with a juice shop – from near VOC Park and handed them over to the child welfare committee. Yesterday (Saturday), we rescued 20 homeless people, who were seeking alms on the road,” the official with the anti-human trafficking wing said.

K Gangadharan, caretaker of a night shelter, said most of the rescued people were from southern districts and they had come to the city in search of work. “Some of them were working as securities and sleeping on the road, with no place to rest. We have altered relatives of some of the rescued people. Only the homeless and abandoned will be accommodated at the shelters. Others will be sent back to their houses.”
