The Indian Air Force is all set to raise its second squadron of the locally made light combat aircraft Tejas at Sulur in Tamil Nadu on May 27, people familiar with the development said on Sunday. The IAF’s first Tejas squadron was raised at the Sulur air base in 2016 with two aircraft and more planes joined the fleet progressively.
IAF chief Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria is expected to travel to Sulur on Wednesday for the event. The second squadron is being raised with the first aircraft in the final operational clearance (FOC) configuration and more will be added later, officials said.
The IAF has so far ordered 40 LCAs, split in the initial operational clearance (IOC) version and the more advanced and FOC configuration. The first squadron consists of IOC aircraft.

“The raising of the squadron, though delayed, is welcome news. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has to speed up production of the Tejas to meet the trust placed on it by the IAF; eight Tejas per year is just not acceptable,” said Air Vice Marshal Manmohan Bahadur (retd), additional director general, Centre for Air Power Studies.
In March, the defence ministry gave the green light to the purchase of 83 LCA Mk-1A advanced Tejas jets from HAL. The contract is expected to be inked in the coming months.
The deal, expected to be worth Rs 38,000 crore, is critical for HAL to prevent a complete halt of production at its facilities. HT reported on January 11 that HAL’s order books are empty beyond 2021-22 and new orders from the armed forces --- especially for the 83 jets --- are critical for continuity in production.
The LCA Mk-1A will come with additional improvements over the FOC aircraft, making it the most advanced Tejas variant so far.

COIMBATORE: A Coimbatore based textile company claims to have developed an antiviral fabric to contain the spread of coronavirus.
The textile company has introduced an anti-virus treating technology, Viro block in collaboration with a Swiss company to develop the fabric. This technology is being used on the fabrics that kill or deactivate the virus within 3 minutes of contact with it.
Sundar Raman, MD of the company told ANI, "The material has been tested internationally on the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The chemical is unique as it takes 3 minutes to deactivate the virus".
Using the technology, the product is being used to manufacture a range of N95 masks at an affordable price. N95 masks are claimed to have 10 wash cycles.
"When the COVID-19 crisis came about, we were among the earliest entrants for the manufacturing of PPE coveralls in the country, as we had pushed ourselves to develop the capability to both manufacture the material and the product using seam-sealing technology," Raman added.

Corpn. faces yet another challenge in multi-level car parking project

Ground-breaking ceremony for the project conducted in March 2019
Coimbatore Corporation that has been braving one challenge after another is facing yet another in completing the ₹40.78-crore multi-level car parking (MLCP) project on D.B. Road, R.S. Puram.

The first challenge it faced was the contract-company executing the work proceeding at such a slow pace that it had to issue notice asking reasons. The second was the COVID-19 lockdown that saw all activities, including construction, stopped.

Though the Corporation had hoped to make some progress in building the MLCP when the State Government began easing one restriction after another by allowing construction provided the workers were at the construction site, it was not to be.

The company resumed work with the 50-odd labourers at the site and with the resumption the Corporation had hoped to make good some of the time lost in the lockdown but that was not to be. The civic body sources said that the resumption of special trains for migrant labourers saw them leave the site for home.

The Government easing more lockdown restriction and allowing movement of people from other districts and States brought in hope to the Corporation, the sources said, adding that with the labourers it had mobilised the company had resumed work at the site.

But, even if the company were to show progress at the expected pace or perhaps more, there was one more challenge that had started staring on the Corporation’s face – the import of the hardware equipment, including electronic items.

The company had ordered the items from a Chinese company that operated out of Wuhan in the Hubei province, known as ground zero of COVID-19 cases. With the shipment getting stuck at a Chinese port, the Corporation was not confident of having the equipment any time soon and, therefore, had started looking for alternatives.

The sources said that the Corporation had asked the company to look at Indian companies that offered automated car-parking solutions, even if it meant changes in technical specification.

What the Corporation hoped for now was that the D.B. Road MLCP would not be as it had visualised, that there would be compromises and it had to choose the best among the available alternatives, if it had to complete the project within the two-year period.

The Corporation had conducted the ground-breaking ceremony for the project in March 2019 and hoped to complete it by March 21. The MLCP was to house 370 cars.
