While on Monday, senior officials will hold a meeting with ward councillors to get their suggestions for Smart City plan, the zonal-level meetings will also begin the same day. The civic body will also hold meetings with technical experts and industrialists as well, this week.

"On Monday, we will hold a meeting with all ward councillors to get their suggestions for the plan. The same evening, a similar zonal-level meeting will be held in the north zone office. It will continue till all the five zones are covered and will run throughout the week," said K Vijayakarthikeyan, corporation commissioner. Ward councillors, resident welfare association members, representatives from NGOs and residents will participate in this meeting. "I will hold a meeting with various architects, engineers, planners and consultants in the city on Tuesday to get their inputs and suggestions as well," said Vijayakarthikeyan.

A meeting will be held with city industrialists on Wednesday. "We have invited all renowned industrialists to get their inputs," said a nodal officer.

The commissioner will also take part in a workshop that will be held in Chennai on Thursday and Friday. A review meeting has been called for by the state government in which all the shortlisted cities will take part and their progress will be monitored.

The Facebook page of the city has received only 400 likes so far and few suggestions have come from representatives, said an official. Consultant, Ramesh Ramakrishnan of ICRA management consulting services said that they were making progress and were operating as per the schedule. "We will soon conduct polls and meetings with the people. We will start several polls from next week and will stay in touch with schools and colleges to speed up the process," he said.

Smart city proposal: Coimbatore councillors discuss traffic woes

COIMBATORE: Traffic congestion took the top spot at a meeting of the Coimbatore Corporation councillors held here on Monday to discuss the smart city proposal.

The councillors raised their concerns and also suggested measures to solve the city's traffic woes. Water supply and waste management were also discussed.

"The civic body had announced several roads, ring roads and road widening projects. If these projects are implemented along with the multilevel car parking project, the traffic congestion in the city could be reduced," said finance committee chairman Prabhakaran.

He added that if the sky walks and other proposed flyovers were constructed, the traffic management would become easier.

Town planning committee chairman Senthil Kumar seconded this and added that traffic was becoming a major issue in the city.

East zone chairman K R Jayaram spoke about how several national highways and state highways could be widened and traffic could be monitored.

Councillors urged the city mayor and corporation commissioner to speak to the officials at the regional transport office and ensure that before a car license is permitted or a car purchase is made, the civic body officials should give a certificate ensuring that the potential buyers have parking facilities at their residence. "We see that all the cars are parked on the roads these days," said R Gayathri, Congress councillor representing ward 12 (K K Pudur).

Other councillors also urged the civic body to remove encroachments on various stretches that would widen the roads.

The way they delayed the website and consultant, their way of conducting meetings for name sake, etc. Namma Aracha maave araikavendiyadhu dhan.

COIMBATORE: Coimbatore corporation on Wednesday held a brainstorming session with the industrialists in the city as it is all set to present its vision, goal and strategy for the smart city project at a workshop to be held in Chennai on Friday.

The meeting saw industrialists coming up with a number of proposals that ranged from setting up of a central park on jail grounds to setting up of satellite library, science park, museums, elevated corridors to ease traffic congestion and a dedicated power line for industries.

"We have submitted a city mobility plan to the state government but it is yet to decide if it will be bus rapid transit system or metro rail that will be implemented. The vehicle population has been increasing with almost 30,000 vehicles hitting the roads every month. Finding smart solutions to ease traffic congestion will be a major focus of the smart city plan," said the corporation commissioner, K Vijayakarthikeyan.

E K Ponnusamy, president of Coimbatore district small industries association (CODISSIA) said creating more parks in the city was the need of the hour. He also added the plan should have futuristic value, with separate express ways and several ring roads.

Ravi Sam of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) said the city's culture and history should be highlighted by setting up a museum here. Various other industrialists also hinted at popularising car pooling system that exists in some foreign countries where people are encouraged to share cars for transport to ease traffic congestion.

Other suggestions included improving the lakes in the city, creating lung spaces, separate lane for school vans and ambulances and waste management projects.

The commissioner would take part in the workshop to be held at Chennai and present the vision, goal and strategy of Coimbatore's smart city plan.

Whats happening with coimbatoreans?? The smart city page in Mygov.in and Facebook page of Coimbatore smart city are grossly inactive. The smart city page has not reached even 40 suggestions in 2 days.

There is something missing. Has the consultant & cbe corp failed to advertise its intention or rather they wanted to loose this in first phase.

The corporation nor the consultant has announced such a site has opened and to submit suggestions...the on how will the city know??....it's quite obvious that chennai and Trichy are intended and will be the first phase of smart city initiative in TN as none of the other cities have been promoted. Even in the consultants appointed, it's very clear.

Corpn. urged to encourage public participation in Smart City campaign

The response from members of the public to the Coimbatore Corporation’s Smart City initiatives has not been at the expected level.
Cities will have to compete to get funding

If the number of responses in the Ministry of Urban Development’s Smart Cities webpage is an indicator of public participation then Coimbatore is found wanting.

The webpage, on which the public can register their suggestions, records 55 persons expressing opinion for Coimbatore. For Tiruchi, the number of responses stands at 616 and for Dindigul it is 173. For Madurai and Erode it is 34 and 27 respectively.

Sources in the Corporation say that the way the things are progressing, it appears as though the civic body and consultant are holding meetings and interacting with public to tick the check boxes given by the Ministry. Or, they are doing things in a perfunctory manner.

The Corporation and consultant could have engaged FM radio stations to reach a larger number, conducted flash mob programmes, kept suggestion boxes at more places and drawn public attention in a number of ways, including running mobile kiosks for the purpose.

Sources say that in Tiruchi and a few other competing cities, the local bodies have sent out bulk messages to the public inviting them to participate in the process and point out that the local bodies are going out of their way to engage the citizens because it is of the criteria the Ministry has set to select cities for the first round of funding.

The Ministry has designed the Smart City initiative in such a way that cities have to compete to get funding. It will have to come up with innovative proposals and its selection will be based on a number of parameters.

Sources familiar with Coimbatore’s progress in Smart City say that the city was a tepid slow in kick-starting the campaign. But since then it has progressed fast and this can be seen in the number of offline (written) proposals the civic body has received: around 700.

In the coming days, the city will see the Corporation engage with the public in a more visible manner.

Coimbatore Corporation is supposed to submit its vision, goals and strategy document to the Ministry by October 20 and its Smart City plan by December 15.

The consultation it has conducted with various sections of the society is only for the first round and that the second round of consultations will begin soon and they will be better, the sources promise.
