A press release from the Corporation said that over the next 18 months, the Corporation would restore the tank, including the portion on the east that was truncated by Coimbatore-Pollachi Road. It would construct one or two sewage treatment plant(s) to treat two million litres sewage that flowed into the tank from around 15 inlet channels.

The number of treatment plants would depend on how the Corporation chose to bring together the inlet pipelines after connecting the underground sewer lines to the underground sewerage system, said sources familiar with the project.

The release said the Corporation would construct 5.5-km bicycling and walking track along the entire length of the bund, install ornamental lights, erect a pole to hoist the National Flag, construct two eco-friendly community halls, build three synthetic turf for children to play, set up 47 shops for eateries and snack bars.

It also said the civic body would also place four large solar panels, erect 36 towers for small windmills and provide people with special sunset points. They would be in addition to the seven watch tower for security personnel.

The sources said the objective was to turn the Kurichi tank into not just a place of recreation but also a place where the wetland ecosystem was conserved as the development proposal laid emphasis on preserving its environment.

Smart City works to continue at night

o overcome the delay in implementation of lake development project under the Smart Cities Mission, the Coimbatore Corporation has asked the contractors to take up work at night as well.

According to sources, the spread of COVID-19 in Coimbatore and its impact on migrant labourers’ presence had put brakes on the Corporation’s plan to complete the ‘Quick Win’ component of the lake development project.

The component included developing a stretch of the northern bund of the Ukkadam Periyakulam and two areas of Valangulam – the area beneath the bridge on Sungam Bypass Road and along the road across the tank.

To overcome the minimised presence of migrant labourers, who were mostly engaged in the work in Ukkadam and Valangulam, the Corporation had allowed the contractor to work at night as well to finish the component work at the earliest.

The Corporation had hoped to complete the work by March this year and now it looked at October-end as the next deadline, they added.

CM to inaugurate Periyakulam, Valankulam lakefronts today

Work to beautify Valankulam tank bund under the Smart Cities Mission project is in progress in Coimbatore.

Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami will inaugurate on Thursday the ‘quick win’ component of the lake development project that the Coimbatore Corporation undertook at ₹ 89 crore under the Smart Cities Mission.
The Corporation carved out a portion of the ₹ 700-crore lake development project, which involves revamping eight lakes in the city, to create the ‘quick win’ component as it wanted to showcase to the city’s residents what it was doing on the lakes and how it would transform the lakes under the Mission when it would complete the entire project.
Under the ‘quick win’ component, the civic body had proposed development of a one-km stretch of the northern bund of the Ukkadam Periyakulam (Big Tank), the road that cuts across the Valankulam, connecting Trichy Road to Sungam Bypass Road, and the portion of the southern bund of the tank that is beneath the Sungam Bypass Road flyover. The works are expected to be completed by July-end.

Recreation facility
The Corporation sources said that both Periyakulam and Valankulam would turn into places of attraction and recreation as both the lakefronts would have space for conducting shows, holding meetings, bicycling, walking track, children playing or families spending their evenings.

It was building an amphitheatre, bicycling and walking tracks, pontoon, erecting structures for shops, landscaping the bunds, decorating the bottom of the flyover with bamboo sticks and ornamental lights and constructing a boat jetty.
Aside from recreation, the Corporation had also focussed on the need to restore the lakes by preventing entry of sewage and creating natural barriers and filters to clean the inflowing water, sources said.

i see so much of wastage of money. the pavers could have bee used elsewhere rather than being damaged by JCB. In a country of 1.4 billion, we cant find labour to pickup and tack the pavers ofr use elsewhere?
Totally agree ! especially in a city where even in gandhipuram there isnt good pavements/foot paths. Could have been reused. Earlier Cbe corp started reusing the street light poles that were removed from median for flyover constructions.

On a side note, hope they develop the other muddy side on the race course.
