'Cold' Developments in Liverpool

I thought I'd start a thread where people could query projects in the city that haven't officially been cancelled, just that a fair bit of time has passed with no word, to see if others have heard anything recently.

I'll start the ball rolling with -

Maro Development - Brunswick Quay

We lost the skyscraper, but what became of the scheme to develop the site with several smaller buildings? I seem to recall they were to have some kind of roof gardens? The reception to the buildings on here wasn't entirely warm as I recall, and not just because they weren't the soaring skyscraper we all wanted.

Great Howard Street Development

There was a scheme which I think may have been intended for that open land just past Stanley Dock on Great Howard Street where it was to be built down south, but the local council rejected it or something, so Liverpool was touted as the new destination. That was until the southern council decided they wanted it after all. A bit vague I know but I'm sure someone will remember it.

^^The Nirah project? Big fish tanks filled with sea life type things?
I preferred my idea of using the old docks as huge pits full of wild beasts.
Plot 3A, we have not heard a peep since they went to so much trouble to get planning permission.
Public realm amphitheatre at the foot of the Liver Building.

Permission was granted about 12-18 mths ago I believe.

From the title, I thought this thread was about new developments in the treatment of the comon cold being pioneered in Liverpool....!

With the canal link, presumably the space that this would have used is now no longer available?

No, not at all. It was supposed to be the icing on the cake to all the works which are going on, and housing a very posh restaurant.

I'm not sure how any new access to the building at ground level was to be resolved.

What about that big neptune statue that was going to be built in the Mersey a few years ago? Something in the back of my mind is saying it was given the go ahead but I may be wrong. I haven't heard anything on it for a while so i'm guessing it's been scrapped. Does anyone know?
i really hope so!
it looked awful from the render i saw

The only information I can find on it is from this article - http://entertainment.timesonline.co...tainment/books/non-fiction/article2693889.ece - from last October. In passing it mentions that the project has been abandoned. Given the all the news in recent years regarding the new Floral Pavillion and the proposed Morrisons etc in New Brighton, with no mention of the statue, it seems that it has been dropped.

City balloon plan still up in the air
By Mike Laycock

MORE than two years after top balloonist Per Lindstrand unveiled plans to give tourists a view of a lifetime from a tethered helium balloon 400 feet above York, the project has been grounded.

The company behind the ambitious project revealed today that it will probably now be another two years before it takes off - but insisted it will still eventually happen.

Jetville Ltd said the scheme had been shelved because it was part of a bigger, ongoing project in the city which was not yet ready.

However, a spokesman refused to identify the project, or reveal the prospective location which had been earmarked for the balloon base.

He said: "The balloon and the rest of the project work in perfect harmony, so I am therefore happy to wait.

"It will probably be another two years now, maybe 18 months at the most optimistic, but I am confident it will eventually go ahead and York will get this balloon."
More here - http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/mostpopu...wed.city_balloon_plan_still_up_in_the_air.php (Dated 5th June 2008)

It's the same company that was pitching the Liverpool balloon. It doesn't look hopeful if the situation in York is anything to go by.

Balloon to offer 400ft city view
Aug 31 2007 by Nick Coligan, Liverpool Echo

PLANS to offer balloon rides 400ft above Liverpool’s waterfront have been given the go-ahead.

The city will join Niagara Falls, Pompeii and the Pacific island of Bali as a base for a Lindstrand HiFlyer.

The major tourist attraction, recently approved by Liverpool council, will give visitors to Albert Dock a bird’s-eye view over the city centre, docks and the Mersey.

But it will not be up and running until next summer, because its Salthouse Dock venue will first be used for a open-air concert to celebrate Capital of Culture.

The helium balloon ride will be tethered to a star-shaped platform in the dock and will ascend almost 400ft before being winched down.

It will be able to carry up to 30 passengers and each journey will last about 15 minutes.

If it is as successful as Lindstrand HiFlyers in other parts of the world, thousands of visitors are likely to take rides in the second half of 2008.

The attraction is the brainchild of record-breaking balloonist Per Lindstrand, best-known for his work with tycoon Sir Richard Branson.

Mr Lindstrand has teamed up with Oxfordshire-based World Eye Corporation to operate the balloon.

Carl Boreham, from World Eye Corporation, said: “At the moment, we are planning to call it the Liverpool Eye, but we are open to suggestions.

“We will be contacting schools in the area to let them know about it, and we would like to work with other attractions at Albert Dock, perhaps to offer a joint family ticket.”

Liverpool’s waterfront will join other world and national heritage sites as a base for a Lindstrand HiFlyer, including Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls and Lucerne in Switzerland.

Does anyone know what the state of play is with the tower at The Capital (aka the Sandcastle)? I know plans weren't very far along, but is this still on the back burner, or has it been extinguished altogether?

With Plot 3A done for, King Eddie's looking increasingly unviable (even before it's got planning permission), because of the state of the property market, and little movement on Shanghai, it would be nice to see at least one proposed tower for the CBD cluster still progressing.

I would like to see this:

But even bigger at the Pier Head or Albert Dock area. Or even so large ships pass between the legs.
