Sri Lanka's 'Trace Expert City' gets CodeGen as first tenant

July 28, 2014 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's 'Trace Expert City', an information technology park in the capital Colombo, kicked off with the first tenant software firm beginning operations.
Codegen, a travel solutions firm with offices in the UK and Sri Lanka which had taken up 5 bays in the first phase of the project with 13 bays spread over 85,000 square feet.

CodeGen Chief Executive Harsha Subasinghe said the knowledge park will help take Sri Lankan products to the international market. Operations were formally declared open by Defence Secretary Gothabaya Rajapaksa.

Housed in a Colonial era warehouse earlier known as Tripoli market in the Maradana district of Sri Lanka's capital, the IT park was rebuild by state-run Urban Development Authority and the military.

The old warehouse has been renovated with an exposed brick and industrial style design.

CodeGen has moved its 250 staff to the IT park.

The IT Park comes under an organization called TRACE (Technologically Reawakening Culture of Excellence) where Subasinghe is listed as Vice Chairman.

"The first time I heard the idea of an Expert City was in 2004, when the team was out with our CEO Harsha in a country pub in Folkestone, Kent. At that time it was more a dream than a reality, because we were a start up without a complete product. And, "Expert City" was a dream that was very far away. Later in the intervening years I continued to hear about the "Expert City" concept.

Years passed, and CodeGen reached greater heights that no other product company in Sri Lanka has ever reached. We are known for developing the most comprehensive Tour Operating System in the world. With a strong presence in the Sri Lankan industry Harsha tried his idea of establishing an "Expert City" with the Government. But, politics stood between the dream and reality and such initiatives looked increasingly difficult in Sri Lanka.

But few years later the country started to change. The decades long conflict in the country ended and development initiative like highways - which we thought would never be seen in our life time - were coming up fast. In the midst of this mini revolution, Harsha found a perfect ally in the form of the Secretary of Defence; who is a visionary that has endorsed ideas to bring about change in the country. And so, finally all the needed elements were in the right place.

Building the Expert City in Tripoli has been no easy task. Transforming an old warehouse complex into a large sophisticated office space needed the devoted effort of many individuals. However the Expert City in the making is much more than an office complex. It's a new concept. It's a place where ideas are your morning coffee and innovation is a style of living. It is a true environment for experts."

Calcey Technologies, an agile software product engineering company operating from San Francesco, CA and with its Innovation and Development Center in Colombo, Sri Lanka, has just moved to a new state of the art office premises in TRACE Expert City in Maradana (Colombo 10). Moving to the new office premises this morning was marked by a simple ceremony with the participation of Calcey’s directors and staff.

Calcey has at present 80 software engineering and support staff, and is growing rapidly. “Not only is the new office premises a “cooler” place to work from, but it also has a lot more seating capacity and offers us a chance to expand our team rapidly in the next three years. TRACE Expert City itself is centrally located with easy access to all modes of transportation. It was a lot of hard work to get the new place up, and all of us at Calcey are now proud of our efforts and the outcome”, said Mangala Karunaratne, Calcey’s CEO.
